METHOD OF MAKING ORNAMENTAL AND OTHER DESIGNS IN RELIEF.

Be it known that I, MAX SUEss, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Method of Making Ornamental and other Designs in Relief, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description.

In the manufacture of the finer grades of pocket-books, card-cases, pouches, bags, portfolios, and a great variety of like goods from leather or cloth it is desirable to apply to the surface of the finished article a raised orna mentsuch as a coat of arms, a monogram, or a fanciful design-usually of leather, sized cloth, paper-cloth, or similar material, of contrasting color. It is customary to form these ornaments by cutting them from the body of the material with a die having knife-edges corresponding to the outlines of the ornaments. This method is objectionable for several reasons: first, because of the great expense of making the cutting-die, particularly if the design be a very delicate and. intricate one; and, second, because the cutting-knives tend to compress the material and leave blunt or rounded edges or outlines, instead of sharp and clean-cut ones.

My present invention has for its object to provide an improved method of making raised ornaments of leather, paper, cloth, or other suitable material for the uses above mentioned, whereby the expense, incident to the formation of a cutting-die will in great measure be saved, and ornaments with sharper and more perfect outlines can be produced.

My invention, while adapted for ordinary designs of simple outlines, will be found to have its chief value in the manufacture of ornaments of intricate pattern, where it would be found exceedingly difficult to place knifeedges of constantly-changing curvatures as close to each other as the character of the design would require.

My invention consists, primarily, in forming ornamental or other designs in relief by embossing the leather, cloth, paper, or other suitable fabric by means of pattern-dies, and, while the fabric is still within the female or counter die, cutting away the unembossed portions, and subsequently mounting the em bossed portions on a suitable backing.

My invention also consists in making ornamental or other designs in relief by emboss ing the fabric between suitable pattern-dies, then cutting away the superfluous unemlbossed portions, then filling the deeply'embossed portions with suitable padding, and finally ap plying the embossed design to a backing.

In carrying out my invention a male and female die of the desired pattern, are formed, and the materialas, for example, leatheris placed between them, having preferably first had applied to its reverse side a coating of size or a backing of thin adhesive paper, for the purpose of giving more distinct outlines upon such side. The dies (usually heated) are now pressed together, and the material is embossed, after which the female die, with the fabric still therein, will be removed from the press for the cutting operation. This operation is performed by cutting with a sharp in strument through the material from the reverse side along the outer edges or outlines of the embossed portions, the knife being inclined outwardly from the embossed portions while cutting. By this operation all the unembosscd material is cut away from between and around the embossed portions, which are left with cleancut and sharply-defined edges. The embossed portions are next glued to a backing, preferably of contrasting color, and firmly pressed thereon.

If any parts of the ornament are deeply embossed, I prefer, before mounting, to fill such deep parts with paper or other suitable padding that will. serve to prevent the ornament being pressed out of shape.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The method of making ornamental or other designs in relief, which consists in embossing the fabric between male and female pattern-dies, then removing the male die, and, while the fabric is within the female die, cutting away the unembossed portions, and subsequently mounting the embossed portions on a suitable backing, substantially as described.
