Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
H. WHITE, OF NEVPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
NEWSPAPER-FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,200, dated January 22, 1861.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. S. VHITE, of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Paper and Letter File; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, shown as a portable device or detached from any fixture or table. Figs. 2 and 8, transverse sections of the same, taken respectively in the lines a?, y, y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4L, a top view of my invention, shown applied to a table or other fixture. Figs. 5 and 6, transverse sections of the same, taken respectively in the lines a, z', z, a', Fig. 4L.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in' a novel way of securing the file to a. table or fixture, whereby a secure attachment is obtained and one that will admit of the ready adjustment of the file to the table or fixture and its ready" detachment therefrom.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, A, represent two strips which may be of wood or other suitable material, wood however would be perhaps the preferable material. These strips may be of any suitable length and their inner or adjoining sides should be plane surfaces and the Outer surfaces may be of polygonal or other form.
The inner or face side of the strip A, is provided with three or more pins a, which t into holes Z), in the strip A when the two strips are secured together see Fig. 2. The two strips are secured together by cords c, c, (l, the cords c, c, being at the endsof one of the-strips and the cord (l, at the center of one of the strips; as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and l. The ends of the strips A, A, are slotted longitudinally at right angles with their face sides as shown at f, said slots be ing sufficiently wide to receive the cords c, c.
B, are wire hooks which are attached to the strips A, A, somewhat near to the cords in order that the latter may be wound around them and prevented from being casually released.
The sheets, shown in red, are placed side by side, not one inside the other as hitherto, and the pins a, are passed through the back margins of the sheets and the strip A', is then adjusted to strip A, the pins a, entering the holes b. The cord fl, is then wound around a pin o, which is in the strip opposite to that to which the cord CZ, is attached, and the end of said cord is wound around its hook B, see Figs. 1, 9. and 5. The end cords c, c, are then passed around the ends of the strips A, A', through the slots ax, and then wound around their hooks B, see Figs. 1, 3, et and 6. Thus it will be seen that the sheets may be secured between the strips in a very expeditious and secure manner. The central cord (Z, prevents the strips from spreading or bellying out at their center, while the end cords firmly secure the ends of the strips together. This result could not be obtained by the ordinary hinge and staple arrangement nor by any of the plans hitherto devised for securing the strips together. My invention not having a rigid attachment at either end admits of a parallel adjustment of the strips, whatever number of sheets may be secured between them, and the sheets therefore may always be firmly clamped.
Those files which are designed for reading rooms, and are secured to a table or fixture, have a button C, attached near one end and a staple D, near the opposite end. The button C, is adjusted in a loop E, attached to the table F, or fixture G, and the staple D, passes through an eye H, attached to the table or fixture, the eye having a small padlock f, in it to prevent the papers being pilfered. This forms a very convenient mode of attachment simple and efficient.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The employment or use of the button C, and staple D, attached to one of the strips; in connection with the loop E, and eye H, attached to the table or fixture G, as and for the purpose specified.
I-I. S. VHITE.
