No. 781,587 1 Claim. (Cl. L10-312) The present invention relates to containers and more particularly to a container having `an easily detachable coupon incorporated in its outer ply.

In many instances, there is need for a container which incorporates Va coupon which may be removed by the consumer and utilized to obtain a premium. It is desirable that the consurner need not utilize a knife or other tool to detach such coupon.

The container of the instant invention satises this need by embodying a coupon which extends to the overlap edge of the outer ply of the container, and thus presents a sharply delined, exposed edge which can be easily picked up with `a iingernail to expedite detachment of lthe coupon from the container. To permit this detachment, the underside of the coupon is coated with `an adhesive resistant material such as 'Wax Iwhich prevents adhesion between the coupon Iand the surface or surfaces lunderlying it, even though the usual over-all 'application of glue is utilized to secure the outer ply to the underlying portions of the container. Thus, the invention provides an easily detachable coupon which may be incorporated in the container at little additional cost.

'I'he primary object of the invention, therefore, is to provide in ya container an integral, easily detachable coupon which presents a sharply dened edge that may easily be picked out by the consumer without tools.

Another object is to provide ya detachable coupon which may be incorporated in `a container body Without requiring any substantial changes in normal manufacturing procedures.

Numerous other objects land advantages of the invention Will be apparent `as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.

Referring to the drawings:

FIGURE l is `a perspective View of a container ernbodying a coupon made according to the principles ofthe instant invention;

FIG. 3 isa view of the underside of the coupon bearing portion of the outer ply of the container prior to its incorporation in the container; `and FIG. 4 is `an enlarged sectional View taken substantially along the line 4-4 in FIG. 1, parts being broken away.

As a preferred and exemplary embodiment of the instant invention, the drawings illustrate `a container formed with a tubular body 12 of ilexible sheet material comprising a rnain `body wall 14, formed of Ia suitable material such -as fibre, and a relatively thin protective and decorative outer body ply 16 also of llexible sheet material having one of its peripheral edge portions 18 overlapped and the other peripheral edge portion 20 underlapped to form a lap joint 22 (see FIGS. 2 and 4).

The outer ply or layer 16 is made of `a suitable material, such as coated paper or paper Ibacked foil, and may be imprinted with the usual legend to identify the contents of the container, as indicated in FIGS. l and 2 so that it serves as a label yfor the container. The outer ply 16 is secured to the body wall 14 by means of a continuous, over-all film of adhesive 24 which covers its entire undersurface, and extends into the lap joint 22 to thereby adhere the overlap 18 to the underlap 20.

The opposite ends of the body 12 are closed by means of upper and lower end closure members 26, 28 secured to the body 12 in suitable end seams 39.

An integral detachable coupon 32 is set ol`1r in the outer ply 16 by means of connected lines of weakening 34 formed in the material of the ply 16. These lines of weakening 34 are shown as lines of perforation, but may take any other suitable form, such Vas inside or outside score lines, and terminate -at the edge 36 of the overlap 18. As seen in FIG. 4, this edge 36 projects 'at right angles from the subjacent exterior surface of the outer ply 16, and this provides a sharply :defined step which may be easily engaged by a fingernail of the consumer to start the tearing action `along the lines of weakening 34 in order to detach the coupon 32 from the container.

To prevent the adhesive 24 from adhering the coupon 32 to the underlying surfaces of the 'body wall 14 and underlap 20 and thus interfering with or preventing its detachment, a iilm of `an adhesive repellant material 3S, such ias parailin or microcrystalline wax, is spot coated to the undersurface of the coupon 32 prior to the time the outer body ply 16 is adhesively secured to the main body Wall 14. Thus, the adhesive resistant material 38 is interposed between the coupon 32 and the `adhesive 24, and the adhesive is rendered ineifective as regards the coupon.

As seen in FIG. 3, the adhesive resistant material 38 does not extend beyond the contines of the coupon 32. As a result, the outer ply 16 immediately adjacent the coupon 32 is tightly adhes-ively secured to the body wal-l 12 and underlap 20, thus minimizing the possibility of having the tearing laction leave the lines of weakening 34 and run olf into the outer ply 16 surrounding the coupon 32. This insures quick yand .accurate detachment of the coupon 32 from the container Without requiring the use of a knife or other sharp tool on the part of the consumer.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it Will be `apparent that various changes may .be made in the form, construction and larrangement: of the parts without ldeparting from the spirit #and scope of the invention or saoricing all of its material ladvantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

I claim:

A container having a multi-ply body of ilenible iibrous material, comprising an inner body wall ply and an outer body wall ply adhesively secured thereto, said outer ply terminating -in yan adhesively secured lap side seam joint including the longitudinal edge of said outer ply, a detachable coupon constituting an integral par-t of said outer ply extending per-ipherally inwardly from its said longitudinal edge vand including a part of said side seam joint, said coupon being defined by a. weakened line of severance extending therearound from said longitudinal edge of the outer ply through said joint, whereby to expose the edge of said coupon at said joint for insertion of the lingernail thereunder to manually detach the coupon along said weakened line of severance, and a lm fof adhesive resistant wax material on the under surface of said coupon to prevent it from adhering to said inner body Wall ply.
