COMBINED COAT LINER AND BATHROBE Filed Aug 29, 1960 INVENTOR. JgfE/W/ \SAL VATOQE Y OTTDRNEYS The present invention relates generally to articles of clothing, and particularly to a combined coat liner and bathrobe adapted to serve as a lining for a coat when fastened therein and alternatively adapted to serve as a bathrobe when removed from the coat.
Removable linings for topcoats are known which provide the advantageous feature of a coat whose weight may be selectively varied by using the coat with or without the removable liner. Normally, a liner for use with a topcoat is of a girth which is slightly less than the girth of the topcoat and is provided with securement means at its front edges and around its collar which mate with complementary securement means provided on the coat such that the liner may be secured within the coat with the edges of the liner held inwardly of the edges of the coat. Thus, a finished coat is presented to outside view which does not differ in appearance depending upon .the presence or the absence of its inside liner. The
liner used within these. coats is usually of a material having good insulation properties such as wool and is designed to enable a topcoat to be used where the wearer would ordinarily require an overcoat.
It would be an advantageous feature of such topcoat liners to provide means whereby the topcoat liner would serve some other function during the times when the liner is not secured Within the topcoat. The present invention is specifically directed towards a combined topcoat liner and bathrobe which may be alternatively used to provide the heretofore known advantageous features of a removable liner and in addition to utilize the same garment as a bathrobe for use when removed from its mating topcoat. It will be appreciated that such a construction would find advantageous use by a large group of people since it provides two different garments which are both 'usually owned by most people, both of these garments being available to the consumer for the price of the topcoat alone. Since good coat liners are normally constructed of high quality wool such that the insulation provided is maximized, and since bathrobes of high quality are similarly fabricated from high quality wool materials, the purchasing public, according to this invention, have available to them a topcoat including a removable liner as well as a high quality bathrobe, both of which being available at the price usually demanded for the topcoat and liner alone.
in addition to the factor of low cost, it will be appreciated that in many instances such a construction will afford savings of weight and bulk which can be achieved by no other known means. Since a topcoat and a b throbe are never worn at the same time, the owner of a combination coat liner and bathrobe according to the present invention, when travelling using his topcoat and liner, will not find it necessary to carry a bathrobe in his lugga e. When he desires to use a bathrobe when reaching his destination, all that is required is the unfastening of a few securement means to remove the combined liner-bathrobe from his topcoat and he has, with no extra weight and space taken in his luggage, a high quality bathrobe. Although such a construction find particular advantages for the travelling person, it will be appreciated that the conveniences afforded by a construction according to the present invention may be en- ;joyed by many other classes of people.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a removable liner for a topcoat which provides advantages in addition to those normally found in removable topcoat liners. Specifically, it is within the contemplation of the present invention to provide a combined coat liner and bathrobe for use within a coat to serve as a liner therefor and removable from the coat to serve as a bathrobe.
In accordance with an illustrative embodiment which demonstrates some features and advantages of the present invention there is provided a combined coat liner and bathrobe for use with a single breasted coat of the type including a right front and a left front each having cooperating edges having an overlap when the coat is closed and a collar formed between the cooperating edges of the front. The combined coat liner and bathrobe memher is disposed within the coat to serve as a liner therefor removable from within the coat to serve individually as a bathrobe. The combined coat and bathrobe member includes a back, two sleeves, a right front, a left front, a collar, and securement means to hold the bathrobe member into the coat. Each of the two fronts has cooperating edges which, when the bathrobe is closed about the wearer, form an overlap which is greater than the overlap of the coat. The securement means adapted to hold the member into the coat include a plurality of individual fasteners positioned about the edges of the right front and the collar and a securement strip spaced from the edge of said left front and positioned on the inner surface of the bathrobe member. In order to contain the greater girth of the bathrobe member within the topcoat, the left front is adapted to be folded substantially parallel to its edge at a distance spaced from the edge such that the securement strip faces outwardly. The securement strip is similarly provided with a series of individual fasteners and the coat is provided with a plurality of mating fasteners on its inner surface on both its fronts and about its collar which are adapted to register and engage with the fasteners on the bathrobe member and the fasteners on the securement strip. When the bathrobe member is secured within the coat for use as a liner, it is completely contained within the confines of the coat such that it is completely hidden from external view.
The above brief description, as well as further objects, features and advantages of the present invention, will be best appreciated by reference to the following detailed description of a presently preferred embodiment, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a combined coat liner and bathrobe when positioned within a topcoat;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the device illust ated in FIG. 1 and shown as it appears when secured within a topcoat when the topcoat is closed but with the topcoat omi ted for the sake of clarity:
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the combined coat liner and bathrobe as it appears removed from the coat and as is in use as a bathrobe; and,
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 44 of FIG. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows showing the relationship between a coat and a coat liner according to the present invention when the coat is closed with its edges in an overlapping relationship.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, there is shown a garment, generally designated by the numeral 10, which is adapted for use both as a coat liner and as a bathrobe. The garment 10 is illustrated in FIGS.
while being Worn.
appear in use by a wearer as a bathrobe. As may be seen in FIG. 3, the garment 16 has the general appearance of an ordinary bathrobe and includes a right front 14, a left front 16, sleeves 18, 29, a collar 22 and a back 24. Further included as accessories to the garment 16 are a pair of external pockets 26 on both the right front 14 and the left front 16, an internal pocket 27 for use as an inside pocket for the topcoat 12 and a Waist belt 28 adapted to be fastened about the Waist of the person wearing the garment when in use as a bathrobe. It will be appreciated from viewing FIG. 3 that the left front 16 of the garment 10 overlaps the right front 14- by a considerable degree thereby affording a considerable two ply portion to facilitate a simple and secure closing of the garment 10 such that the bathrobe will remain closed It will be further appreciated that a substantial overlap of the two fronts of a bathrobe is a required feature of a bathrobe and the absence of a generous overlap in the garment 10 would be a distinct disadvantage which would greatly minimize the desirability of the combined coat liner and bathrobe. However, the provision of such a generous overlap of the left and right fronts of the bathrobe introduces a problem in containing the garment 10 within the topcoat 14. Since the overlap of the garment 10, when used as a lbathrobe, is by far greater than the normal overlap found in the topcoat 12, the girth of the garment 10 is greater than the girth of the topcoat 12. This problem has been solved according to the present invention in the manner described below.
When the garment w is secured within the topcoat 12, the sleeves 18, are contained within the sleeves 30 of the topcoat, the right front 14 lies against the right front 32 of the topcoat 12, the back 24 and collar 22 lie against the inside of the back and collar 34 of the topcoat 12, and the left front 16 of the garment It) lies against the inside surface of the left front 36 of the topcoat 12. In this illustrative embodiment of the present invention, the right front 14 of the garment 10 is slightly smaller than the right front 32 of the topcoat 12 such that it is completely contained within the borders of the right front 32 of the topcoat 12, and is spaced from the front edge 120. However, the left front 16, which provides the material for the overlap when in use as a bathrobe, is substantially greater in width than the left front 36 of the topcoat 12. The excess material of the left front 16 is formed into a flap 38 which is folded at the fold line such that it lies fiat against the front surface of the left front 16. The fold line 40 is positioned such that the left front 16 is of equal width to the right front 13 and such that it is easily contained within the borders of the left front 36 of the topcoat 12, the fold line 4% being spaced slightly from the left front edge 36a. When the flap 33 is folded along the fold line 40, the resulting girth of the garment 18 is less than the girth of the topcoat 12 such that it may be contained within the topcoat 12 for use as a liner without any portion of the garment 16 being externally visable.
Securement means are provided to fasten the garment 10, for use as a liner, Within the topcoat 12. The securement means in the present embodiment include a plurality of buttons 42 formed on the inside of the surfaces of the topcoat spaced from the edge 32a of the right front 32, spaced from the edge of the collar 34- and from the edge 36a of the left front 36. Mating securement means, button holes 44, are formed within the garment 1t) spaced from the edge 14a and within the collar 22 and extending down to the fold line 4% of the left front 16. A securement strip 46 is provided on the inner surface of the left front 16 and is placed thereon such that when the flap 38 is folded at the fold line 49, the securement strip 46 faces in a frontward or outward direction such that the flap 3% and the strip 46 are sandwiched between the garment lit and the topcoat 12. Additional button holes 44 are provided within ,e'rasos the securement strip 46 and are spaced from the fold line dil a distance equal to the spacing of the button holes 44 from the edge 14a. Although the securement means utilized in the present embodiment include conventional buttons and button holes, it should be appreciated that a large number of differing securement means may be utilized to practice the present invention.
The garment is utilized as a liner for the topcoat 12 by placing same Within the topcoat 12 such that the sleeves 18, 2%) are contained within the sleeves 30 of the topcoat f2 and the back and the front of the liner lie against the inside surfaces of the back and front of the topcoat 12. The flap 38 is folded along the line 40 such that the left front 16 of the garment it may be contained within the confines of the left front 36 of the topcoat 12 and the securement means are then fastened. Specifically, the buttons 42 on the inner surfaces of the topcoat 12 are passed through the button holes 44 on the garment 10 and in the securement strip 46 thus securely fastening the garment it) in place for use as a topcoat liner.
The relationship of the garment 10 to the coat 12 when the latter is buttoned about the wearer is illustrated in the sectional view of FIG. 4. The left front 36 of the coat is overlapped onto the right front 32 with the coat buttons 48 passing through the coat button holes 5%. The respective liner fronts 14, 16 are substantially coplanar with the fronts 32, 36 of the coat 12. As 1s seen in FIG. 4, the fold line 4% is positioned with respect to the left front 36 of the coat 12 such that the garment 1% does not interfere with the closing of the coat 12.
When it is desired to utilize the garment 10 for its alternate purpose as a bathrobe, the securernent means are unfastened and the garment 10 removed from the topcoat 12. The garment If is then utilized in a manner normal with a bathrobe such that it is placed about the body of the wearer, the larger left front 16 overlapping the right front 14 and secured in place by means of the belt 28. The belt 23 may be stored in any convenient manner when the garment ft is utilized as a topcoat liner, one suggested method being shown in FIG. 2 wherein the belt is secured around the midsection of the garment 1%) and its ends tucked into the pair of external pockets, 2s.
