This invention relates to devices designated to amuse, entertain, and thereby to retain the attention and prevent boredom as well as to accelerate the passing of time, and more particularly to television receivers for visual and auditory reception.
The invention relates specifically to television sets and to the particular and unusual application of the same as for example by one being treated by a dentist or barber or the like in dentist or barber chairs and in a prone or inclined position.
Having a dentist treating the inside of the mouth and the teeth is generally recognized as annoying to the recipient if not an unpleasant and painful experience, however, the unpleasantness of the experience at least on occasion is largely psychological and consequently it is desirable to attract and maintain the attention of the recipient of the treatment in order to divert the attention of the larger imaginary unpleasantness of the experience.
It is an object of the invention to solve the problem indicated and to provide attention attracting and retaining means in the form of a television set with a picture unit mounted in a manner to be used by a person in a prone or reclining position such as in a dental, barber or other chair and which picture unit is angularly adjustable for proper disposition for ready observation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a television set in which the cabinet and the receiver are adjustably mounted on a support and with the picture tube unit independently and adjustably mounted on an adjustable support such as a boom or the like.
A futher object of the invention is to provide a television set including a cabinet with a television receiver therein and means whereby said cabinet may be supported on a bar or other location and with a boom pivoted to and longitudinally adjustable on such cabinet, as well as with a picture unit casing containing a picture tube carried by a universal joint in said boom.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective illustrating one application of the invention;
FIG. 2, a view on the line 22 of FIG. 1, including a section through the receiver and speaker unit;
FIG. 3, a section on the line 33 through the picture unit;
FIG. 4, a section on the line 4-4 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 5, a section on line 55 of FIG. 2.
Briefly stated, the invention is a dual unit television set including a television receiver speaker unit, and a separate picture unit. The receiver speaker unit is contained in a cabinet provided with mounting means in the form of clamps for application to a horizontal bar or like member, although several clamps or attaching means of other character are contemplated, and on the receiver speaker cabinet is mounted a post with a coupling pivotally mounting a boom for lengthwise adjustment and on the near end of which boom is a counterbalance and on the outer or remote end of which is a generally bullet-shaped picture unit carried by a universal joint so that the picture unit may be adjusted for height, nearness, angularity, and position best suited for easy viewing.
With continued reference to the drawing, a cabinet is adapted to contain a receiver unit 11 composed of a 3,072,738 Patented Jan. 8, 1963 series of tubes 12 and a speaker 13 with suitable controls 14 and 15 readily accessible on the exterior such as the front 16 of the cabinet.
The receiver speaker unit It is adapted to be mounted on a support and for this purpose a pair of clamps 17 with binding bolts 18 are attached to the under side 19 of the cabinet by means of fasteners 19'. The clamps 17 may be secured upon a horizontal bar or any other type of support with appropriate attaching means when the support is not a horizontal surface.
The set is provided with an independent picture unit supported on the receiver speaker unit and for this purpose a post 20 is provided which extends above the cabinet 10 and is provided with a coupling composed of a pair of cooperating halves 21 connected by bolts 22, the halves 21 having circular openings 23 and 24. Within the opening 23 is a nipple 25 received in the end of a reduction coupling 26 the larger end of which fits over the top of the post 20. Within the circular opening 24 is secured a stud 27 having an opening 28 in which is received one of the bolts 22 for retaining the stud in place. Fitted on the upper end of the stud 27 is a sleeve 28 attached to a clamp 29 in which a tubular boom 30 is slideable endwise and through which boom electrical conductor means 30 extends and through a coupling 31 to a generally bullet-shaped picture unit 32. The coupling 31 is of the ball and socket type for universal adjustment and being attached to the picture unit by a nut 33 on an externally threaded nipple 34 engaged into the coupling 31.
The picture unit 32 is composed of telescopic sections 35 and 36, the latter having a reduced end 36" for telescopic reception of the portion 35. The hollow housing formed thereby receives a picture tube 37 held by a yoke 38 which in turn is engaged by a pair of springs 39 attached to brackets 40 in the housing 35. The portion 36 of the housing is provided with vent openings 41 to allow circulation of air cooling the picture tube. The universal or swivel joint 31 includes an internally threaded portion 42 within which is received the externally threaded nipple 34. The swivel joint 31 has a threaded collar 43 for retaining the ball 44 formed on the end of the boom 30. By unscrewing the collar 43 the necessary adjustment as to elevation, nearness, position and angularity with regard to the viewer may be made. The boom 39 may be of suitable length and may be provided on its rear end with a counterweight 45 having a cylindrical stem 46' telescoping within the end of the boom 30'.
It will be understood from the foregonig that a television set is provided of dual units, one being a cabinet with the receiver and speaker therein, such cabinet being adapted to be suitably mounted in fixed position and with the picture unit carried on a boom so that it can be readily disposed in position for convenient viewing, regardless of the angle at which the view is disposed.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification, but only-as indicated in the accompanying claims.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination of a housing for a television receiver and speaker, mounting means in the form of a pair of brackets attached to the under side of said housing for securing said housing adjustably and detachably on a support such as a horizontal bar, a television receiver and speaker within and carried by said housing, a post extending upwardly of said housing, a coupling attached to the upper end of said post, a clamping sleeve pivotally carried by said coupling, means for tightening and untightening said sleeve, a tubular boom slidable endwise within said sleeve, a universal joint on the outer end of said boom, 21 picture unit connected to said boom by said universal joint, said picture unit comprising a generally bullet-shaped housing composed of a telescopic section with a window opening therein, a picture tube in said picture unit and presented to said window, conductors extending from said housing through said boom to said picture unit, and a counterweight on the end of said boom opposite said picture unit.
2. A housing, a pair of brackets attached to the under side of said housing for mounting said housing adjustably on a support, a television receiver and speaker within and carried by said housing, a post extending upwardly of said housing, a coupling attached to said post, a clamp pivotally carried by said coupling, a tubular boom slidable endwise of said clamp, a picture unit adjustably mounted on one end portion of said boom, said picture unit comprising a hollow generally bullet-shaped member with a window opening therein, a picture tube in said picture unit and presented to said window, a conductor extending from said housing through said boom to said picture unit, and a counterweight on the end of said boom opposite said picture unit.
3. A housing, a pair of brackets attached to the under side of said housing for mounting said housing adjustably on a support, a television receiver and speaker within and carried by said housing, a post extending upwardly of said housing, a coupling attached to said post, a clamp pivotally carried by said coupling, a boom slidable endwise of said clamp, a picture unit adjustably mounted on one end portion of said boom, said picture unit comprising a hollow generally bullet-shaped member with a window opening therein, and a picture tube in said picture unit and presented to said window.
4. A dual unit television set comprising a receiver speaker unit and a spaced independent picture unit, mounting means in the form of a pair of brackets attached to the under side of said receiver speaker unit for securing the same adjustably and detachably on a support such as a horizontal bar, a post extending upwardly from said receiver speaker unit, a boom adjustably connected to said post, and a picture unit connected to the end portion of said boom.
5. A dual unit television set comprising a receiver speaker unit and an independent picture unit spaced therefrom, means for selectively mounting said receiver speaker unit on a support, and a boom disposed in a generally horizontal position and supporting said picture unit on said receiver speaker unit in a manner to permit said picture unit to be raised and lowered and swung from side to side for location at the desired position for viewing.
6. A dual unit television set comprising a receiver speaker unit of the portable type for application upon a support and a separate picture unit for independent movement relative tosaid receiver speaker unit, means for attaching said receiver speaker unit to a support, a post carried by said receiver speaker unit, a universal coupling pivotally mounted on said post, a tubular boom slidably received within said coupling, whereby said picture unit may be adjusted as to horizontal and vertical positions, a universal connection between said boom and said picture unit whereby said picture unit may be adjusted angularly, a counterbalancing weight on the end of said boom remote from said picture unit, and electrical conductors extending from said receiver speaker unit through said boom to connect said picture unit to said receiver speaker unit.

Claims (1)
1. THE COMBINATION OF A HOUSING FOR A TELEVISON RECEIVER AND SPEAKER, MOUNTING MEANS IN THE FORM OF A PAIR OF BRACKETS ATTACHED TO THE UNDER SIDE OF SAID HOUSING FOR SECURING SAID HOUSING ADJUSTABY AND DETACHABLY ON A SUPPORT SUCH AS A HORIZONTAL BAR, A TELEVISION RECEIVER AND SPEAKER WITHIN AND CARRIED BY SAID HOUSING, A POST EXTENDING UPWARDLY OF SADI HOUSING, A COUPLING ATTACHED TO THE UPPER END OF SAID POST, A CLAMPING SLEEVE PIVOTALLY CARRIED BY SAID COUPLING, MEANS FOR TIGHTENING AND UNTIGHTENING SAID SLEEVE, A TUBULAR BOOM SLIDABLE ENDWISE WITHIN SAID SLEEVE, A UNIVERSAL JOINT ON THE OUTER END OF SAID BOOM, A PICTURE UNIT CONNECTED TO SAID BOOM BY SAID UNIVERSAL JOINT, SAID PICTURE UNIT COMPRISING A GENERALLY BULLET-SHAPED HOUSING COMPOSED OF A TELESCOPIC SECTION WITH A WINDOW OPENING THEREIN, A PICTURE TUBE IN SAID PICTURE UNIT AND PRESENTED TO SAID WINDOW, CONDUCTORS EXTENDING FROM SAID HOUSING THROUGH SAID BOOM TO SAID PICTURE UNIT, AND A COUNTERWEIGHT ON THE END OF SAID BOOM OPPOSITE SAID PICTURE UNIT.
