Description

Oct. 23, 1962 w. GRIFFIN ICE CAP CONTAINER FOR PICNIC JUG COOLER Filed Nov. 13, 1959 plcNlc agls INVENTOR. x VULFRED GRlFFIN ATTORNEY 3,059,452 ICE CAP CGNTAINER FOR PICNIC JU G COOLER Wilfred Grifiin, 8316 7th Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. Filed Nov; 13, 1959, Ser. No. 852,739 1 Claim. (Cl. 62457) This invention relates to refrigerating apparatus and, more particularly, to a cooling device for picnic jugs.
Ordinarily, the contents of a picnic jug are diluted when ice melts directly into the food or beverage contained therewithin. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a device for cooling the contents of picnic jugs which will overcome this difficulty in a simple and convenient manner.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a cooling device for picnic jugs which will uniformly cool the contents thereof, and which may be readily replaced without affecting the contents of the jug.
Still an additional object of the present invention is to provide a device for cooling picnic jugs which is extremely Simple in construction, eflicient in operation, and which can be manufactured in large quantities at a relatively low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following detailed specification, taken with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a cooling device made in accordance with the present invention in actual use;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the cooling device shown in FIGURE I removed from the picnic 1 FIGURE 3 is an enlarged longitudinal cross sectional View of the assembly shown in FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of a closure member forming a part of the present invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a cooling device made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a substantially cylindrical side wall 12 having an end wall 13 at one extremity defining an interior compartment 14 which may be filled with a fluid 16 such as water, brine, or the like. A fill line 18 indicated on the exterior of the side wall 12 provides a guide for filling the compartment 14 with the refrigerating fluid. The upper open end of the side wall 12 is provided with an internal thread 20 which threadedly receives an externally threaded plug 22 of a closure member which completely closes the interior of the compartment 14. The top of the closure member 22 is provided with a radially outwardly extending flange 24 which is supported upon the top of the neck 30 of a picnic jug 25 having an Patented Oct. 23, 1962 interior storage compartment 26 which may be conveniently filled with food or liquid beverage 28. A closure cap 32 threadedly received by the neck of the jug 25 overlies and secures the mounting flange 24 of the device in proper seated engagement with the top of the jug. An outlet spout 34 communicating with the interior of the bottom of the jug 25 provides means for dispensing the contents from the interior of the jug compartment.
In actual use, the closure member 22 may be permanently or removably secured to the side wall 12 to allow for the permanent or temporary filling thereof with the cooling fluid .16. The unit 10, when filled with coolant, is inserted into the freezer or refrigerator to cool or freeze the liquid 16. The unit is then applied to the picnic jug, in the manner illustrated, so as to cool the contents 28. If desired, each unit may be constructed of disposable paper material, at a relatively low cost, so that such may be disposed of after each use.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A picnic jug having a compartment with a filler neck at the top for receiving fluid and a spout near the bottom for releasing fluid therefrom, the filler neck of the jug being threaded, a closure means received on the filler neck sealing the jug compartment against leakage of the fluid therein, a cooling device extending downwardly from the filler neck into the jug compartment and having a cylindrical wall that is closed at one end and open at the other end to form a storage compartment liquid coolant, a closure plug inserted into and threadedly engaging the open cylindrical end to close the storage compartment against leakage of the coolant liquid, the closure plug having an annular flange supported on the top of the filler neck and fixedly held thereat by the closure means and holding the cooling device in spaced relationship with the jug so the fluid in the jug compartment encircles the cylindrical wall and is disposed between the closed cylinder end and the bottom of the jug.
