SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,028, dated September 9, 1884.

Be it known that I, GHAELEs A. SULZMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterford, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Li fting-J acks 5 and I doV hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.

This invention relates to improvements in lifting-jacks for raising or adjusting at any desired height vehicles, &c., through the medium of a sliding jaw sliding over a serrated rack-bar; and to this end the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed .out in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side elevaA tion; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view ofthe same, taken on theline .vr x, Fig. l.

A represents a rectangular base or stand, upon which is mounted a bifurcated standard, B B, the lower end of which is mortised within said base in the ordinary'manner, and the upper end has passing through it a pin or screw, C, provided with washers c c upon the inside of the standard B B,

D is a serrated or toothed rack-bar, provided at its upper end with a slot, E, and which is loosely connected to the standard B B at the top by means of the pin or screw C, so as to admit of a free vertical movement of the serrated rack-bar between the standard B B. To the lower end of the serrated rack-bar D is pivoted the bifurcated end of a lever, F, by means of the pivot f, and at the saine end of the lever, and near the same point, thelever is again pivoted at f to the standard B B, this pivotalpoint being the fulcruin-point of the lever F in hoisting and lowering the axles of vehicles or other objects.

G is a slotted sliding bar or plate, provided with a beak or tooth, g, for holdingthe axle of a vehicle and adjusting it at any desired point along the serrated rack-bar, the sliding bar or plate sliding over the serrated rackbar through the mediumof the slot in it, and the projection or curved tooth g upon the un` der side of the bar or plate meshing within the serrations in the rack-bar, thus adjusting the sliding plate which holds the axle, &c.

H is an eye firmly secured in the .rectangular base A. and to which is loosely connected at one end a link, I, through which the lever F passes, and the free end of the link,`when the lever is in its downward position and the serrated nachbar is in its raised position,

passes over a stop, Ii, which serves to hold Y the serrated rack-bar iirml y in position when it is elevated at its highest point.

It will be observed from the foregoing description that in its operation my device is simple, and it can be manufactured at but a very small cost.

I reserve the.right to vary the eonstructio .of my device without departing from the spirit of the invention.

That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a lifting-jack, the combination of the bifurcated standard B B, provided with the pin C and washers c c, the lever F, pivoted to the lower end of the slotted serratedrack-bar D, and the slotted sliding bar G, having the tooth g, meshing within the serrations of the rack-bar, substantially as described.

2. In a lifting-jack, the combination of the base A, standard B B, lever F, serrated rackbar D, slotted at its upper end, sliding bar G, having beak or tooth g, pin C, for supporting the serrated rack-bar D, and link I, for holding the lever down in position, all constructed and arranged substantially as' herein set forth.
