INVENTolL Gu I THERF.- ANIEJ.
United States A This invention relates generally to sculpturing accessories, and more speciiically to sculpturing guides.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a del vice which will aid in guiding the novice or beginner in sculpturing by providing the basic three-dimensional outline of the proposed project.
It is another object of the invention to provide a sculpturing kit having interchangeable parts which will aid the novice yin preparing'a sculpture of various kinds of objects.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a kit having means to enclose the raw material from which the sculpture will -be made and having 4a set of guides placed around the raw materials for directing the positioning of various cuts to be made in the material.
It is still -another object of the invention Vto provide a device having the above described qualifications which, While guiding the novice in the basic cuts to be made on the raw material, will still lallow suicient finishing operation to be done without guides, thereby assuring the sculptor of sucient opportunity to express his own artistic ability.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a sculpturing kit :bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has Ia minimum number of parts,is inexpensive to manufacture and eicient in use.
For other objects land for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE l is a perspective view showing the invention in assembled position and showing the device in operative use;
FIG. 2 is a development plan view of the kit frame;
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view through the lines 3 3 of FIG. 2, and looking in the -direction of the arrows thereof, showing certain parts separated;
FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view through the lines 4 4 of FIG. 2 and looking in the direction ofthe arrows thereof and showing certain parts separated.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral represents a sculpturing kit device according to the present invention wherein there is a frame 11 comprised of a plurality of frame panels 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 which are attached together by means of hinges 18 which are located bet-Ween each of the respective panels. This frame is made of metal or other suitable material that is durable. This frame 11, as shown in the drawing, is designed so that it may be folded whereby each of the panels becomes one side of a conventional six-sided box. Thus, as shown in FIG. 2, five sets of hinges are required to make the frame assembly, and in order to form the box shown in FIG. l, the panel 12 serves as the face lock plate. The panel 13 serves as the top; panel 14, as the right side; panel 15 as the bottom; and panel 16 as the back, while panel 17 serves as the left side. Various tabs, slots and screws are provided tomake the box rigid.
Panel 12 is provided with a pair of slots 19 which are for the purpose of receiving tabs 2u located on panel 14. Another pair of slots 21, also located on panel 12, are provided for engagement with tabs 22 on panel 17. A slot 23 on panel 15 is provided for engagement with tab 24- on panel 14. Another slot 25 also on panel 15 is atet 2 provided for engagement with tab 26 on panel 17. Stil another pair of slots 27 are provided on panel 12 which are for the purpose of engagement with tabs 28. Each of the said tabs 28 is provided wtih a threaded hole 29 for receiving a screw 30. The `screw 3) has a head hav- ,y
ing the same conguration as the outline of slots 27 `for a purpose which will subsequently be shown.
Each of the siX panels comprising the frame assembly has a large central rectangular opening 31 having a recessed edge 32, the recessed edge 32 being on that side of the panel which is on the interior side when the device is formed into a box-like structure. lEach of the openings 31 has its recess 32. unfinished at one of its corners, as indicated at 34. The sculpturing kit includes also one or several sets of interchangeable guide plates 35, each ofthe set of guide pltaes is comprised of six panels, one of `which fits into each of the openings in the frame panels. One of the corners of each of the guide plates is cut off to correspond with the unnished recessed edge at corner 34 of the panel. Thus, each of the guide plates can be assembled into the recessed edge only one way. Each of the guide plates is provided with a groove or series of grooves 36 which describe the contour of the object to be created. Thus, as shown in FIG. l, the face or front panel 37 has a series of grooves 36 which clearly outline the side View of an animal, having a body, head, legs and tail. These guide plates may be made of metal or any other desirable durable material and the grooves are made to extend through the material. The guide plate 38 placed in the side panel of the frame assembly is provided with grooves 36 which clearly indicate a front view of the animal shown in guide plate 37. The guide plate 39 placed Within the top panel of the frame assembly clearly indicates a plan View of the animal in its grooves. Each of the guide panels will have a letter 49 or other indicia and each of the panels will have a corresponding letter 4,1, or other indicia, for the purpose of guiding the operator in placing the correct guide plate in the proper panel. Still another part of the sculpturing kit is a carving tool 42 which will comprise a sau/,element 43 having saw teeth 44 and a handle 45'. The saw will be of slender design so as to permit cuttingk into small corner and cutting small arcs, as shown at 46, in FIG. 1. The saw will also be of substantial length so as to permit passage through the entire box and thus `be able to -be guided in the grooves of the opposite respective guide plates.
Still other parts of the sculpturing kit will include materials not shown in the drawing, which include carving blocks of suitable material, several of these being included with each of the kits. Others may be made available at additional cost to the user. There would also be a number of setting pins made of the same material as the carving blocks; in addition, paints and brushes, several small hand carving knives as well as instructions could be included in the kit.
In operation, the frame assembly is laid out flat, as shown in FIG. 2. \A set of six guide plates is then placed, each into its respective openings by observing the corresponding letters indicated on each panel and the plate. Due to the unfinished corner of the panel and the notched corner corresponding thereto in the guide plate, the plates cannot be put in the device incorrectly.
A carving block made of soap, wax, styrofoam, or any other suitable material of a specilic size to ltit within the device, is then placed upon the back panel 16. The right and left sides 14 and 17 are then turned up as well as the bottom panel 15. At the same time tabs 24 and 26 engaging slots 23 and 25 respectively. The lock screws 30 are aligned with the plate tabs 28. The panels 12 and 4 spaanse .Y 3 ,Y 12 is brought around tabs 2G Vengage slots 19 and tabs 22. engage slots 21. Y After theftabs 23 are engaged in their proper slots, the headof the lock screw is given a quarter turn, and the box is rigidly locked. The closed and locked box may now be placed on a table with the stop lip lying against the table edge directly in iront of the operator. The carving tool may then be inserted into one of the guide plate locks in front of the box. Starting at the top of the said slots, the tool is pushed completely through the box and made to engage the corresponding slot on the opposite side. By holding the box against the table with one hand, the operator may begin sawing n by guiding the carving tool through the slot, and setting pins may be inserted into the box where indicated on the guide plate near the slot Where the cut was just iinished. The setting pins should be inserted after every cut, thereby assuring that the work will remain in a stationary position within the boX. Y
After all the slots have been cut on` one panel, the operator then turns the box with the stop lip 47 against the edge ofthe table and-the operator is then ready to proceed with the sawing operation to the next guide plate. After completing the sawing operation in all threepanes in the manner above described, he need not insert any setting pins after completing the iinal cutting. The box may now be opened and the sawed ofi material removed. The sculpture is now ready for finishing touchesand for painting. Y
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as deiined by the appended claims.
