PEN-CLEANER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,270, dated October 2, 1860.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONATHAN IVARREN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New Yori, have invented a new and Improved Pen-Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.

`With pens, especially with pens made of metal, such as steel or gold, it is of the greatest importance that the saine should be kept clean, because the vink, when lett on the pen, is liable to cause the same to corrode and to lose its proper elasticity and smoothness, and because the ink, when not cleaned otlY from the pen, becomes thick and causes thepen to write bad. It is obvious, that the cleaning of the pen can be accomplished with the greatest ease and perfection in liquid which dissolves the ink, and I have therefore arranged a bottle of peculiar form with a brush, which is firmly sprung` into the bottle, in such a manner, that some suitable tluid may be introduced into the bottle and that the pen may be thoroughly cleaned.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents a bottle made of glass so that the contents of the same are visible, and that the writer can see where his pen is when he introduces it into the same. Its spout c., is inclined at an angle of about 45 degrees (more or less) to enable the writer to pass his pen in conveniently and the back of the bottle is curved so that if the point of the pen strikes the same, said point is turned down toward". the brush without any injury to the pen. The brush B, is placed into the bottle in an inclined position and it is retained by the corner b, at the bottom and by the notch c, under the neck of the bottle. It is simply sprung in and in case it should become worn out it can easily be taken out and a new one introduced, if it is desired.

The bottle is filled with liquid such as pure water, or water mixed with a little alcohol to prevent the liquid freezing and the pen is pushed into the bottle as shown in red outlines in F ig. 2. As the point strikes the curved back of the bottle it is turned down toward the brush, and by rubbing it on the brush several times, all the ink and impurities are thoroughly cleaned ott.

This device is very handy for every penman, it can be made cheap and it will enable the writer to preserve his pen for a much longer time than he can by using ordinary pen cleaners.

Nhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A pen cleaner constructed of a bottle A, with an inclined spout and with a curved back and being provided with a. brush B, which is retained by a notch c, under the neck of the` bottle as herein described.
