(Cl. 118-233) This invention relates to a machine for applying adhesive to the marginal surfaces of circular paperboard discs which are to be inserted in the end of a paperboard tubular member and sealed thereto by an inturned end of said tubular member which is lapped over the adhesive marginal surface of the disc and adhered, and the invention particularly pertains to a machine in which the disc is readily inserted to be rotated over an applicator roll to which the adhesive is transferred from a supply tank to be applied to said disc.
Heretofore. the adhesive has been manually applied either to the disc or to the inturned end of the tube, and such method is slow and cumbersome.
Accordingly, one of the main objects of the invention is a machine for mechanically applying the adhesive to the discs.
Another object of the invention is an adhesive applicator machine which is simple in construction and efficient in operation.
Another object of the invention is an adhesive applicator machine in which the disc is rotated with its marginal surface in contact with an adhesive applying roll.
Another object of the invention is an adhesive applicator machine in which the disc is readily inserted in and removed from the machine.
Further objects. and objects relating to details of construction and economie of operation, will readily appear from the detailed description tofollow. In one instance, the objects of the invention have been accomplished by the device and means set forth in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the appended claims. A machine constituting a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification. in which:

Referring specifically to the drawings in which like numerals designate like parts, numeral 2 is a tank mounted on top of a pedestal 3 extending upwardly from a base 4. An electric motor 5 is mounted on the pedestal in position for it to be connected by a transmission belt 6 to a pulley 7 mounted on stub shaft 8 that is journaled in a sleeve 9 within a support 10 fitted on the end of the tank. This shaft is held in the support 10 by a collar 11 interposed between the end of the sleeve 9 and the wall surface 12 of a socket 13 within the support. There is a gear 14 on the shaft 8 meshing with a gear 15 on a second shaft 16, said gear 15 meshing with a gear 17 on a third shaft 18. These shafts 16 and 18 are also journaled in the common support 10 fitted to one end of the tank 2.
Within the tank 2 is mounted a roller 20 journaled to a bar 21 that is pivoted at one end by a pin 22 to a cradle member 23. The bar 21 is recessed to receive the roller 20, and the cradle member receives the bar 21. The opposite ends of the cradle member 23 are each pinned to the parts 24, 24' of brackets 25, 25' which are fitted to the top of the tank. This bar 21, cradle 23, roller 20, and both brackets 25, 25 are made up as a complete unit to be attached to the tank 2 by clamp nuts 27 on screws 28 extending from lugs 29 on the tank wall. The end of bracket 25 has fitted thereto the end of a bolt 30 extending fro-m the wrist pin 31 carried by the end of the bar 21. A nut 32 is screwthreadcd to the top end of bolt 30. A spring 33 is compressed between the underside of the bracket 25 and the wrist pin 31. The roller 20 may be adjusted to the proper elevation in respect to a transfer roller 34 which receives a film of adhesive from the dip roller 20 for transfer to a backing roller 35. The roller 20 dips into the adhesive supply 36, contained in the tank, for extending well below the top level of the adhesive.
The dip roller 20 is driven by the shaft 16 connected by a coupling to the shaft 37 of said roller 20. This coupling includes two pins 38 and 39 each fitted to respective collars 40 and 41. The collar 40 is fixed to the shaft 37, and collar 41 is fixed to shaft 16 with the pins disposed to be engaged. Accordingly, the coupling connection can be readily separated for permitting the entire applicator being removed as a unit from the tank for cleaning. A pair of arm 42 extend upwardly from the bar 21 on opposite sides of the roller 20 for a sufficient distance to overlap the transfer roller 34. This will facilitate assembly and disassembly of the transfer roller when the dip roller 20 is assembled and disassembled. The transfer roller 34 has an axle shaft 43 having a grooved end 44 for being detachably coupled to the tongue end 45 of shaft 18. The periphery of the transfer roller 34 is preferably roughened by small transverse alternating hills and dales 46 rather than being smooth. This facilitate in picking up the adhesive from the supply roller 20 and holding it more evenly distributed about the periphery of the transfer roller.
A scraper or doctor 47 is preferably pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 22 with one end disposed adjacent to the supply roller 20. A rod 48, fixed at one end to the doctor, extends upwardly for its top end 49 to project through a recess in a spanning yoke 50 that is fitted to the top side of bar 21. A clamp nut 51 is fitted to the end of rod 48. This clamp nut 51 is screw-threaded to the top end of the rod 48 so that the doctor 47 can be adjusted relative to the supply roll 20. A spring 53 is compressed between the doctor 47 and the spanning yoke 50 to help hold the doctor in its adjusted position.
Disposed above the transfer roller 34 is the backing roller 35, having a peripheral face 56 spaced from the transfer roller for a distance about equal to the thickness of a paperboard disc 57. The front side of said roller 35 has a conical projection 58 to facilitate insertion of the disc 57 between it and said roller 34. This roller 35 is journaled on a shaft 59 which is screw-threaded to block 60 projecting upwardly from the support 10. This shaft can be attached to and detached from the block 60 by use of a detachable rod 61.
On opposite sides of the roller 34 are a pair of rolls 62 having a grooved peripheral face 63 into which the edge of the disc work object 57 is inserted. These are in horizontal alignment with the space between the transfer roller 34 and backing roller 35, and they function to hold the disc 57 straight while it is being treated. Each 3 of the rolls 62 rotates about a pin 64 fixed to a plate 65 that is clamped by bolts 66 to the top of the support 10.
The gear mechanism on the support is enclosed by a housing 67 fitted to the side of said support, it being open at the bottom 68 to receive the transmission belt 6.
A disc 57 to be treated with the adhesive is placed on a support, generally designated by numeral 70. This support comprises a plate 71 clamped by screws 72 to the top end 73 of tube 74. There is a nose 75 fitted to the end of plate 71 by screws 76, said nose providing a pocket 77 by reason of its backwardly bent end portion 78 which is flared at the pocket entrance. A ring 79 is soldered or spot welded at 80 to the opposite ends of the plate 71. An arm 81 extends from the top end 73, its free end being connected to a guard 82 fitted to the end of the nose 75. The disc turns on the ring 79 when the machine is operated. This entire support 70 is detachably mounted on a pedestal 83 clamped within the tank by bolts 84 extending through its base 85, the tube 74 telescoping with pedestal 83. It is secured against rotation by pin 86 in slot 87. This permits the support being lifted as a unit from the pedestal.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that the applicator device is simple in constuction, and that all the parts mounted within the tank can be readily assembled and disassembled to permit cleaning of the parts and the tank.
I am aware that there may be various changes in details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, and, therefore, I claim my invention broadly as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. An apparatus for applying adhesive to the marginal l surface of a disc comprising frame means, a tank secured to said frame means and containing a supply of adhesive, a supply roller mounted to said frame means and being disposed in said tank, a transfer roller mounted to said frame means and disposed in peripheral contact with said supply roller, a backing roller mounted in spaced relation to said transfer roller to provide a space for receiving the marginal edge of said disc, said backing roller having an axis of rotation, a pair of guide rollers mounted to said frame means, said guid rollers being mounted for rotation about axes of rotation disposed parallel to each other and on opposite sides of said backing roller, said axes of rotation of said guide rollers being disposed in a plane perpendicular to said axis of rotation of said backing roller, and a support means interconnected to said frame means for supporting a disc for rotation about an axis disposed perpendicular to said axis of rotation of said backing roller.
2. An apparatus for applying adhesive to the marginal surface of a disc comprising frame means, a tank secured to said frame means and containing a supply of adhesive, a supply roller mounted to said fram means and being disposed in said tank, a transfer roller mounted to said frame means and disposed in peripheral contact with said supply roller, a backing roller mounted in spaced relation to said transfer roller to provide a space for receiving the marginal edge of said disc, said backing roller having an axis of rotation, and a pair of guide rollers mounted to said frame means, said guide rollers being mounted for rotation about axes of rotation disposed parallel to each other and on opposite sides of said backing roller, said axes of rotation of said guide rollers being disposed in a plane perpendicular to said axis of rotation of said backing roller, each of said guide rollers having an annular groove disposed in the same plane as the space between said backing roller and said transfer roller, the side walls of said annular groove being substantially parallel to each other and to the planes of the faces of said disc and the bottom wall of said groove being cylindrical, whereby said disc is held thereby in desired predeter mined position and orientation relative to said transfer and backing rollers during the adhesive applying operation.
3. An apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein said support is tilted slightly downwardly toward said rollers whereby a disc positioned thereon is urged toward and maintained in contact with said rollers by gravity.
