United States Patent Filed Apr. 15, 19,60, Ser. No. 22,563 1 Claim. (Cl. 4010) The. present invention relates to advertising display assemblies, and is particularly concernedrwith assemblies adapted to be supported by a standard price channel, such as is attached to the front edge of a shelf 'or to .a merchan dise cabinet for slidably receiving rectangular cards bearing indications of price, size, etc.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of an, improved advertising display assembly including a price channel stirrup having outwardly turned retaining edges which can be slidably. mounted in a price channel and fixedly secured in any desired position so that various advertising displays may be supported by the stirrup in such manner that they are not readily removable from the price channel.
Another object of theinvention isthe provision of such a price channel stirrup which is simple in construction, positive in its securing action, which has a minimum number of parts, and which is adapted to be manufactured economically and placed on the market at such a low price that it may be universally employed wherever price channels are .used. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a plurality ofdiiferent forms of advertising assemblies in which the assemblies are all based on the use of a U.- shaped stirrup having, outwardly extending retaining flanges which can be engaged in a price channel and fixedly secured by actuating a threaded member, to spread the flanges and lock them in place.
Other objects and advantages of the-invention will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in. which similar characters of reference indicate similar parts. throughout the several-views.
Referring to the two sheets of drawings accompanying this specification,
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a price channel stirrup. embodying the invention and shown in connection with a standard price channel;
'FIG. 2 is an end elevational viewof the stirrup;
FIG. 3 is a rear view. of the stirrup in perspective;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the stirrup;
FIG. 5 is a bottom plan view of the stirrup;
FIG. 6 is a perspective view showing a price channel and a stirrup assembly for supporting an advertising sign.
FIG. 7 is a view in perspective of another form of advertising assembly in which the stirrup carries a forwardly projecting arm;
FIG. 8 is a view in perspective of another modification in which the stirrup carries a vertically extending wire with a horizontal portion for supporting a sign;
FIG. 9 is a view in perspective of a stirrup and price channel assembly in which the stirrup has a U-shaped wire secured to its yoke and bent forwardly;
FIG. 10 is a view in perspective of a modification in which the U-shaped wire is bent backwardly;
FIG. 11 is a view in perspective of another assembly in which the stirrup supports a vertically extending wire with a cross arm and a card gripping member at its upper end;
FIG. 12 is a perspective view of a price channel assembly in which a sample tin can is carried by the stirrup;
FIG. 13 is a modified assembly in which a pair of stir rups supports a horizontally extending rack.
Short lengths of the price channel employed are indicated in the various figures by the numeral 20; and such price channels are preferably constructed of sheet Patented Jan. 2, 1962 V 2 steel, having a flat'body 21, which is provided at its parallel edges with inwardly turned flanges 22' and23, forming opposed inwardly open groves 24 and 25, which are parallel and which are adapted to receive cards or other sheets of paper bearing prices, names, sizes, etc.
The price channels may be secured in place on a cabinet or shelf by means of nails or screws or any standard fastening devices (not shown).
The price channels usually present their front surface of the body 21 in a vertical position on a shelf; but they are sometimes mounted on meat cabinets, refrigerators, or the like, with the face presented upward or at anangle; and they may be arranged in any desired plane.
The price channel is adapted to be used to. support a plurality of stirrupsof the type shown in FIGS. 1-5. The stirrup is indicated in its entirety by the numeral 26; and it comprises a strip of resilient sheet metal, such as steel, which is bent to substantially U shape, having a pair of spreading flanges 27 and 28 joined by a partially cylindrical yoke 29, and having a pair of outwardly turned retaining flanges 30, 31 at the ends of the legs .27 and 28.
The Width of the strip forming the stirrup 26 may be varied; and in general the stripis wide enoughso that its retaining flanges provide a firm engagement with the price channel 20 and so that the stirrup may support other devices which are generally attached to its yoke.
One spreading flange, such as the flange 28, is preferably provided with a threaded bore 32 spaced from the yoke and from the retaining flange 31 and preferably located midway between the end edges of the stirrup. The threaded bore is provided with a threaded bolt 33, which is preferably threaded over its full length and provided with a rounded end 34 adapted to be rotatablyreceived in a pressed or stamped concavity 35 formed in the, opposite flange 27in position to receive the end of the bolt.
The bolt is threaded into thebore 32 until its end 34 engages the other flange 27; and the bolt preferably has a rounded head 36 provided with a transverse slot 37 of a size adapted to receive a coin, which may be used as a screwdriver for adjusting the bolt.
The stirrup is secured to a price channel 20 either by retracting the bolt until the resilient flanges 27 and 28 can be pressed together to pass the edges of the inwardly turned portions Hand 23 of the price channel; after which the flanges. spring apart behind the flanges of the price channel, or in other cases stirrups may be slid in endwise into the price channel.
The stirrup is secured in place by rotating the screw bolt by means of its head 36 and slot 37 until its upper end 34, engaging in the depression 35, forces the flanges 27 and 28 apart until the retaining flanges 30 and 31 are tightly engaged in the grooves 24, 25 of the price channel.
By using a slotted screw bolt it is not likely that such stirrups can be released or disturbed by children or other unauthorized persons who may not have a screwdriver available and to whom it would not occur to use a coin.
The stirrup may be provided with various types of attachments for supporting advertising devices, such as, for example, in FIG. 9 a U-shaped metal wire 38 has its end portions 39, 40 welded to the yoke 29 and provided with a forward bend in each wire at 41.
Such a bend may be employed when the price channel is arranged at an angle and it is desired. that the sup porting wire 38 extend vertically.
Referring to FIG. 10, this view shows the channel stirrup provided with a similar wire which is backwardly bent at 43 so that the U-shaped portion 44 may extend vertically when the price channel is tilted forward.
Referring to FIG. 6, this view shows an assembly with a similar U-shaped wire 42 extending vertically with respect to the price channel and having its legs welded to the stirrup at 45.- engage tightly inside a rolled paper tube 46, the upper end of which is provided with a pair of slots 47 frictionally receiving an advertising card 48.
; Referring to FIG. 7,- this is a modification in which the stirrup is provided witha forwardly extending arm assembly' 49, comprising'a pair of wires having a pair of upwardlyturned foot portions 50 welded-to the stirrup, a pair of'forwardly extending wire portions 51, 51, and a U-shaped portion 52, which is turned upwardly at 53 to supportmerchandise or a card or a single article, such as a bottle.
, Referring to FIG. 8, this is a modification in which the stirrup 26'has a vertical wire 54 welded at 55; and the vertical wire'is provided at its upper end with ahorizontally extending portion 56 having a hook formation 57 for supporting an advertising card.
Referringto FIG. 11, this is a modification in which the stirrup 26 has a vertically extending wire 58 welded to it at 59 and provided with a cross arm wire 60 near its upper end, having a plurality of hooks 61 depending from the cross arm and welded thereto.
The upper end of the vertical wire 58 may have a split ring 62 welded to it and provided with close spiral turns, which may be spread and used to clamp resiliently an advertising card 63. p Referring to FIG. 12, this shows a rear view in perspective of a price channel 20 supporting a stirrup 26, which has its yoke welded or riveted to an empty tin can 27, showing a sample of the merchandise attached to the stirrup and supported by the price channel.
Referring to FIG. 13, in this case the price channel 20 supports a pair of stirrups 26, 26, the yoke of which are welded at 64, 64 to a horizontal wire which is welded to the ends of a plurality of horizontal wires 65 at 66.
The ends of the horizontal wires are bent upwardly at 67 in each case and welded to a horizontally extending top wire 68, which may be an integral part of the two end horizontal wires 65.
It will thus be observed that we have invented improved advertising disp-lay assemblies adapted to be sup ported bystandard price channels to which they are fixedly attached by the U-shaped stirrup used in each of these assemblies. i 7
The present assemblies are simple in construction, have a minimum number of parts, and the stirrup can be quickly mounted and fixedly secured to any price channel so that it cannot be readily removed by unauthorized persons.
The stirrup may support advertising'material or merchandise; and it includes a minimum number of parts and The legs are spaced sufficiently to 'is very simple in its construction, but is positive in its securing action. 7 p p H p p While we have illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention, many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; and we do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselve'sof all changes withinthe scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by.Letters Patent of the United States is: 8
