SURGICAL SUPPORT 'Filed Feb. 29, 1960 United States Patent 3,013,561 SURGICAL SUPPORT Nedwyn R. Neikin, Overland Park, Kans., assigner to HJG. Enterprises, Kansas City, M0., a partnership consisting of Henry G., Ann R., Cecil, Nedwyn R., and
Edna Neliiin, and Eugene and Elaine Goldstein Filed Feb. 29, 1960, Ser. No. 11,909 3 Claims. (Cl. 12S- 520) This invention relates to a surgical support and more particularly to a belt adapted to be worn by women, which belt simultaneously gives support to the back and abdomen of the wearer.
It is the most important object of this invention to provide a surgical support in the nature of a body encircling belt, which belt has a pad intermediate the ends thereof and a panel section integral with the belt and disposed oppositely to the pad when the belt is in place upon the wearers body whereby the pad will give support to the back of the wearer and the panel section will give support to the abdomen of the wearer.
A yet further object of this invention is to provide a surgical support in the nature of a body encircling belt having a pad and a panel section, there being elastic stretches interconnecting that portion of the belt carrying the pad and the panel section of the belt when the latter v is in position upon the wearers body.
A yet further aim of the present invention is to provide a surgical support for women in the nature of a body encircling belt, which belt not only supports the back and abdomen of the wearer but which also has stretches of elastic material forming a part of the belt which serve to rrnly position the belt upon the body of the wearer.
Other objects of the present invention include the manner in which the portions of the surgical support are interconnected to form a body encircling belt; the manner and position in which stays are carried by the belt to give additional support to the wearer and other details of construction which will become apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a laid out, plan View of a portion of the surgical support, parts being broken away to reveal details of construction;
FG. 1A is a laid out, plan view of the remaining portion of the surgical support, parts being broken away to reveal details of construction;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of FIG. l; and
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of FIG. 1A.
The surgical support comprises a body encircling belt 10, which belt 10 has a non-extensible section 12, a pair of elastic stretches 14 and 16 and a non-extensible panel 18 disposed between said elastic stretches 14 and 16.
The non-extensible section 12, as best seen in FIG. 1A, is comprised of a length of material such as cotton or the like and has disposed centrally thereof a iiexible pad 20 which is encased in a suitable material 22 such as tricot, which material overlies the edges of ilexible pad 20 and is secured to non-extensible section 12 by stitching or the like as at 24 in FIG. 3. Pad 20 is elliptical in conguration and extends substantially the full width of non-extensible section 12, said pad 20 being adapted and intended to engage the lower portion of the back of the wearer when body encircling belt 10 is placed on the wearer. The face of non-extensible section 12 opposite to that to which pad 20 is secured is provided with a plurality of pockets 26, which pockets 26 are disposed at opposite ends of section 12 and receive stays 28 of a semirigid material, said pockets 26 and stays 28 being substantially co-extensive in width with non-extensible section 12.
Patented Dec. v19, 1961 The free end of section 12 is provided with two rows of eyes 30 whereby the belt 10 may be secured in body encircling relationship to the wearer. The end of section 12 opposite to that carrying eyes 30 has secured thereto elastic stretch 16, which sctretch 16 serves to interconnect at all times section 12 with panel 18. Elastic stretch 16 is substantially the same width as section 12 but of a lesser width than panel 18. Stretch 16 is secured to section 12 by a line of stitching as at 32 and to panel 18 by a similar line of stitching as at 34.
Panel 18 is of greater width than the remainder of belt 10 and is preferably of the coniiguration shown in FIG. 1. A pair of pockets 36 and 38 are formed at the opposite ends of panel 18 and are inclined in such a man-` ner as to be substantially parallel with the outermost end edges 40 and 42 of panel 18. Pockets 36 and 38, which are formed by'securing an additional piece of material to one face of panel 18, receive stays 44 and 46 respectivel of a semirigid material. n
Spaced from pockets 36. and 38 respectively and in. clined oppositely thereto are double pockets 48 and 50,
each of said pockets being formed by overlying an additional piece of material to one face of panel 18, Veach of pockets 48 and 50 being adapted to receive a pair of stays 52 and 54 respectively. Stays 52 and 54, like stays 44 and 46, substantially traverse the width of panel 18 and as a result of said stays being inclined and disposed relative to one another in the manner above described sufcient rigidity is imparted to panel 18 whereby the same, when the belt 10 is imposition upon the wearer, may give support to the abdomen of the wearer.
Elastic stretch 14 is secured to` edge 42 of panel 18 by a line of stitching such as 56 and carries at its outermost free end a plurality of hooks 58, which hooks are adapted to engage eyes 30 to secure the belt 10 in place upon the wearers body.
Secured to the lowermost edges of non-extensible section 12 and non-extensible panel 18 are a pair of loops 60 and 62, respectively, which loops are adapted to receive garters such as 64, which garters 64, when carried by all of loops 60 and 62, may be used in the conventional manner to support the stockings of the wearer of belt 10.
As is apparent from theforegoing, belt 10 is adapted to be worn by securing the same about the body of the wearer whereby panel 18 will overliey and support the abdomen of the wearer in a rm manner and pad 20, being next to the body ofthe wearer, will give support to the lower portion of the back of the wearer. It is to be further noted that pockets 26 of section 12 and pockets 36, 38, 48 and 50 of panel 18 are formed on the faces of section 12 and panel 18, respectively, which are not in engagement with the body of the wearer, whereby stays 28, 44, 46, 52 and 54 may give the necessary and needed rsupport to the wearers body without any discomfort resulting from contact of the stays with the body of the wearer. When in the wearing position it will be further appreciated that elastic stretches 14 and 16 serve to hold belt 10 firmly in position upon the body of the wearer and also to give additional support to the waistof the wearer.
As is apparent, there is provided a surgical support, particularly adapted for use by women, which in a single body encircling belt 10, provides a garter belt which may be used to support the stockings of the wearer and which belt 10 additionally has as a part thereof means for supporting the abdomen of the wearer as by panel 18, means for supporting the back of the wearer as by non-extensible `section 12 and pad20 carried thereby, as well as means in the form of elastic stretches 14 and 16 for supporting the waist of the wearer in those areas between those contacted by section 12 and panel 18 of belt 10. Thus belt 10 may be utilized either as a surgical support to support the portions of the body of the wearer abovementioned, or may also be used as a garter belt if such be desired, it being noted that in any manner of use complete and firm support is given to the body of the wearer.
