CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,628, dated June 3, 1884.
. Application filed January 28, 1884. (N0 model.)
.part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference thereon.
The invention relates to chimney-caps, and has for its object the prevention of back-drafts in chimneys, particularly such as are due to the rush of air downward upon a chimney, which is common in cities wherelow buildings stand adjacent to high buildings. It has been common to run the chimneys and chimney-ex tensions of the low houses up in such cases to the top of the adjacent higher building, and various devices have been used to maintain the draft in lower chimneys steady and continuous without this extension of the chimney. The present invention is an improved device intended tomaintain a steady draft under all .circumstances and it consists of the 1111- proved chimney-cap hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings represent my improved device.
Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views on the lines 1 1 and 2 2.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the flue, that is fastened to the chimneytop in any suitable way, so as to form a continuation of the flue of the chimney. It is surmounted by the cylindrical cap B, which is pierced by the transverse cylindrical tube 0. The tube 0 is open at both ends-to wit, at a the other end. This tube 0 is cut through 5 along its roof or upper part, thereby forming the opening d, through which communication is had with the interior of the cap B. This opening (1 is equal or greater in capacitythan the capacity of the chimney-flue. It is the only opening from the interior of the cap B. The products of combustion pass up through the flue, around the tube 0 within the interior of the cap B, down through the opening d, into the tube 0, and out through the openings a orb, or both. When the wind drives up or down or otherwise directly past the openings a and b, it causes a suction out of both of those openings, whereby the draft of the chimney is maintained. When the wind drives into either of the openings a or I), it
passes directly through the tube 0 and out at the opposite opening, causing a suction down through the opening (1, whereby the draft is maintained.
I do not claim herein the-device shown in patent to J. L. Willson, No. 150,211, dated April 28, 1874. My arrangement avoids the back-drafts that would be caused in the device of Willson by the interference of one flue-discharge with the other.
I claim As a new article of manufacture, a chimneycap consisting of the cap B, having a transverse tube, G, provided with openings a, b, and d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
HENRY s. mcKINsoN.

JOHN J. PHELAN, ALAN D. KENYoN.
