SPRING-BOTTOM CAMP-BED.
$PECIPICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,007, dated April 1, 1884-.
Application filed September 25, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM G. HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Camp-Bed, of which the following is a specification, reference beingnhad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to camp beds or cots of that class in which the parts are separable for convenience in transportation; and its object is to provide a bed possessing superior advantages in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness, durability, convenience, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved bed in position for use, the tent or cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view with the tent or cover in position. Fig. 3 is an end view of the bed with the tent removed, showing its use as a lounge indotted lines. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken through one of the side bars on the line w 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the end of one of said side bars. Fig. 6 isa perspective view of the tent or cover detached.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate the main posts or supports, an upwardly-convergent pair of which is arranged at each end of the frame. The top ends of these posts are provided with eyes or perforations O, by which they are inserted on a corresponding pin, D, projecting at the end of alongitudinal top bar or rail, E, the said ends of posts A A being provided with shoulders F, that limit the contraction of the pair; of posts at the lower end. Hooks G G are provided on the inner faces of the posts at their tops, between which is stretched a longitudinal brace-rod, E, that also serves as a support for the mosquito-bar, as hereinafter specified. Near the lower ends of posts A are provided longitudinally-disposed slots I, that receive the corresponding ends, J, of longitudinal side bars,KK, that support the bed-bottom L, which latter is preferably formed of canvas, as shown. From the bottom of slots I projectcoiled springs M, on which the ends J rest, and by this arrangement a free spring movement of the bed-bottom is secured. Rollers N N are preferably journaled'in the sides of the ends J, to lessen the friction of the same in slots I, and a plate or button, 0, is pivoted on the end of each end J, which is adapted to be turned on its pivot, so as to rest across the slot I and retain the said end of the side bars in position. By turning-this button to the position shown in dotted lines, 3 of the drawings, the ends J can be readily removed from the slot when it is desired to separate the parts to be packed for transportation.
P P are cords that depend from each end of the top bar, E, and have loops Q at their ends. By separating one of the side bars K from the posts A A and engaging the loops Q Q over its ends, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, the bed-bottom will serve as a convenient lounge.
R is the mosquito bar or netting, which is suspended on rings S, adapted to slide on the bar or rod H, andconsists of side pieces, T T, connected by triangular end pieces, U U, whereby it conforms to the shape of the frame.
V is a tent which corresponds to the shape of the mosquitobar, having side pieces, W W, and triangular end pieces, X X, a slit, Y, being provided in one side, W, to provide a means of ingress and egress. This tent is adapted to be simply placed over the entire frame, and will completely inclose and protect the bed. I
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, and convenient, and affords an easy spring-bed for camp or house use, while the tent will serve as a protection against rain, wind, .00., when the bed is used out-of-doors. It can be set up in a few minutes, and can be as readily disconnected for transportation.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the end pairs of upwardly-convergentsupportsprovidedwithlongitudinally disposed slots near their lower ends and with perforations at their top ends, the longitudinal top connecting-bar, the ends of which are received by said perforations, the longitudinal side bars, the ends of which project {in the said slots, pivoted retaining-buttons on the ends of these sidebars, the coiled springs seated in the slots, and the bed-bot: tom, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the frame comprising end supports having longitudinallydisposed slots, of the side bars having their ends projecting in these slots, friction-rollers journaled in said ends, pivoted retaining-but tons on the said ends, the flexible bedbottom, and the coiled springs seatedin the bottom portion of the said slots, substantially as set forth.
3. A camp-bed embodying the frame comprising end supports, the pendent looped cords Q at each end of the frame, the side pieces removably connected to end supports, and the flexible bed-bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1 my own I have hereto affixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM GREEN HOLDEN.
