Description

1950 s. B. .BARNACK 2,950,113
PADDLE TOY Filed Jan. 19, 1959 i I 5-5 .2. INVENTOR.
' STANLEY a BARNACK AI'I'GR/VEY United States Patent PADDLE TOY Stanley B. Barnack, Brooklyn, N.Y. (25 Webb Lane, Highland Falls, N.Y.)
Filed Jan. 19, 1959, Ser. No. 787,534
3 Claims. (Cl. 273-97) This invention relates to toys and, more particularly, to a manupally operated paddle toy.
Various types of manually manipulated toys have been provided for children to improve their dexterity and timing. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a manually operated paddle toy that will improve dexterity, as well as provide a device for amuse- Inent purposes.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a double sided paddle toy having a pair of elastically supported balls which may be actuated with one hand to provide a variety of skillful feats.
Still an additional object of the present invention is to provide a manually operated paddle toy of the type described that can be manufactured in large quantities at a relatively low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paddle toy made in accordance with the present invention in operative use;
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the toy shown in Figure 1 in an at rest position;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the toy shown in Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of construction.
Referring now to the drawing, and more particularly to Figures 1 to 4 thereof, a paddle toy made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a substantially rigid panel having a pair of segmental circular paddle portions 12, 14, one at each end integral- 1y connected together by means of a central handle portion 16. Each paddle portion 12, 14 is provided with an *npper surface 12a, 14a, and a lower surface 12b, 14b,
of substantially identical surface texture.
In accordance with the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 4 of the drawing, an elastic band or cable 18 extends through a central opening 19 of each paddle portion 12, 14, but in opposite directions so that the resilient ball 22 at the opposite end of each such 2,950,113 Patented Aug. 23, 1960 elastic 18 is adapted to strike the bottom surface 12b at one paddle portion and the top paddle surface 14a of the opposite paddle portion. Knots 20 at opposite ends of the elastic 18 secure the elastic within the opening 19 of each paddle and also serve to retain the resilient ball 22 upon the opposite free end thereof. 4
In actual use, the device is held in the manner shown in Figure 1, whereby both balls may be actuated simultaneously to alternately strike the associated surfaces in one way or another, depending upon the dexterity and skill of the operator.
In Figure 5 of the drawing, a slightly modified form of construction 30 is shown wherein the central handle portion 16' integrally connects the opposite paddle portions 12', 14', each one of which is provided with opposing surfaces. In this embodiment, however, both elastic elements 18 extend outwardly from the same upper or lower surface 12a, 14a of the respective paddle portions, so that the balls 22 associated therewith may be simultaneously actuated by the operator so as to strike at the same time the respective surfaces of the panel. Of course, these elastics 18 can be made to extend outwardly from either the upper or the lower surfaces of the paddle portions.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A paddle toy comprising, in combination, a main body member having a pair of paddle portions one at each opposite end of said main body member, a handle 'integral with both of said pair of paddle portions and lying in substantially a common plane thereof, a pair of balls, an elastic cable securing each one of said balls to one of said pair of paddle portions, each one of said pair of paddle portions comprising a substantially segmental circular plate lying substantially flat on both sides, and said handle being substantially symmetrical with both of said paddle portions and with both sides thereof.
2. A paddle toy as set forth in claim 1, wherein one of said balls is elastically secured to the upper surface of one of said paddle portions, and the other one of said balls is elastically secured to the lower surface of the other one of said paddle portions.
3. A paddle toy as set forth in claim 1, wherein each one of said balls is elastically secured to the same one of said surfaces of both of said paddle portions.
