- This invention comprises a novel and useful polishing and grinding table and more particularly relates to an apparatus for effectively polishing and grinding surfaces upon objects and especially for use by lapidaries'for polishing stones and the like.
The principal object of this invention is to provide an apparatus for polishing and grindingsurfaces such as those of precious and semiprecious stones, and wherej by the grinding and polishing surface shall be subjected to a vibratory motion.
, A further object of the inventionjis to provide an appara'tus in conformity with the preceding object. which will readily permit the presenting of various different grinding and polishing surfaces article to be abraded or polished. v

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the ac companying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in;

The fundamental aim of this invention is to provide a simple and compact form of apparatus whereby a rapid vibratory movement in a horizontal plane may be given to a carriage, which, in turn, carries a series of selected polishing and abrading surfaces for grinding and polishing an article held thereagainst, and whereby various sets of different polishing and grinding surfaces may be interchangeably employed with the apparatus.
In accordance with this purpose, the apparatus illustrated consists of a supporting stand indicated generally 'by the numeral 10 and which preferably comprises a plurality of legs 12 which, as shown, may conveniently be generally L-shaped in cross section. Indicated generally by the numeral 14 is a supporting frame consisting of vertical frame members 16 secured to the inside surfacestof each of the legs 12 in spaced relation to the top of the same to thus provide a rectangular open frame. At the bottom of the members 16 are diagonal- 1 1y disposed flat strips 17 which, as shown best in Figure 3, intersect .at the central portion of the frame.
Indicated generally by the numeral 18 is a reciprocatory carriage which is supportedcentrally of the, hollow rectangular frame 14 as set forth hereinafter and is subjected to a vibratory motion in a horizontal plane by a means to be subsequently described. This carriage includes vertically extending side walls 20 which thus pro vide a rectangular tray having a bottom Wall 22 with laterally projecting, apertured lugs 24 at its upper surface which provide means by which the carriage or tray is supported centrally of the hollow frame 14 for vibratory motion in a horizontal plane as set forth hereinafter by a means to be subsequently described.
The top surfaces 25 of thelside walls 20, as seen in Fig. 5, are provided with dowel pin openings 26 for the reception of dowel pins 28, whereby an attachment indi-' substantially the same size as that of the carriage 18' and' consists of vertical side walls 32 which intermediate their top and bottom edges upon their inner surface are provided with a peripheral groove 34 in which is seated a partition 36; I t
As will be apparent from Figure 5, both the bottom surface 38 and bottom surface 40 of the side walls of the attachment are. provided with dowel pin openings 42 for the reception of the dowel pins 28 of the carriage 18, whereby the attachmentmaybe reversibly mounted upon the topsurface of the walls 20 of the carriage 18. At this point it should be observed that. the top surface of the bottom wall 22 of the carriage 18 and both the top and bottom surfaces of the partition 36 of the attach- As shown in Figures :4 andS, criss-cross grooves 43 in the member 36 define therebetween surfaces 45 comprising the polishing or abrading surfaces previously mentioned. It will .thus be apparent that by adjusting the nuts, 56 upon the upper threaded end of the bolt or rod 54 that the carriage 18- may be in a horizontal plane, driving means connected to said carriage and causing vibratory motion thereof, said carriage having an abrading means on said bottom wall, an attachment comprising side walls and an abradin-g means extending between and carried by said walls, means detachably securing the attachment upon said carriage, said abrading means including amember having abrading surfaces on both sides thereof, said securing means retainleveled and will be held centrally of the open frame of the supporting stand of the apparatus.
Depending from the mid-portion of the bottom 22 of" the carriage 18 is a ring or annulus 66 secured thereto: as by welding 68. This ring provides a central cylindrical recess or cavity 70 constituting. a bearing and which receives an eccentric member 72 fixedly secured to a vertically disposed shaft 74. The abovementioned. shaft is journaled through a tubular boss .76 welded: or, otherwise secured to the, members, 17 at their intersectioni By means of pulleys 78 secured to the end of the shaft, and actuated by a belt, not shown, from any suitable source, motion is imparted to the shaft 74,. which in turn through the eccentric member 72'causes vibratory motion of the carriage 18 in a horizontal plane, such motion being permitted by the flexing of the sup.-- porting cable. s
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous. modifications'and changes will readily occur. to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation as shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed. v
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A polishing and grinding table comprisinga supporting stand including a frame having an opening there in, a carriage loosely received andmovable wholly within the confines of said opening, polishing and abrading means carried fixedly by said carriage and movable therewith, means mounted upon said stand and. disposed :within said frame and outside of said opening andre'siliently: supporting and centering said carriage in said opening:
for vibratory movement in the horizontal? plane: ofthe frame, vibratory means for causing vibratory motion of said carriage upon said supporting means 'said' carriage; including a platform having upstanding side walls, said supporting and. centering means being connected to said: side walls and to the sides of said frame, an attachment" having means for detachably and reversiblysecuring the side walls thereofto said carriage side walls whereby the attachment will be vibrated with the carriage, said. polishing and abrading means being carried. by said attachment, said attachment having reversible abrading:
surfaces disposed between the attachment side walls withv said last mentioned means being disposed ontboth of said surfaces.
2. A polishing and grinding table-comprising a supporting stand including a frame having an opening therein, a carriage including a bottom wallv and upstanding:
side walls thereon, resilient support means secured to said carriage and frame and suspending the carriage ining said attachment upon said carriage in reversible positrons.
3. A polishing and grinding table comprising a supporting stand including a frame having an opening therein, a carriage including a bottom wall and upstanding side walls thereon, resilient support means secured to said carriage and frame and suspending the carriage in said opening for vibratory movement in all directions in a horizontal plane, driving means connected to said carriage and causing vibratory motion thereof; said carria'ge having an abradingmeans on said bottom wall,'an at: tachment comprising side walls and an abrading' means, extending between and carried by said walls,- rneans detachably securing the attachment upon said carriage, saidabrading; means including a member having abrading'surfacesv on both} sides thereof, said securing means retaining said'attachmentiupon saidcarria'ge in reversible positions, said carriage and. attachment. having their. side walls disposed for endwise abutting engagement;
4. tical movement, polishing and abrading means carried fixedly by said carriage within. the confines thereof and movable therewith, flexible means supporting said car riage from said legs for gyratory movement in a horizontal plane and for limited vertical movement, said supporting means-being connected to the exterior of. said carriage at its upp r. end and to said legs outside of said opening whereby said supporting means and its connections will not limit movement of said carriage in said opening, vibratory means for causing-a uniform and con-. tinuous smooth vibratory motion of said carriage, said carriage having a. bottom wall with marginal sidewalls thereon, an attachment for said carriage and having polishing and abrading surfaces thereon, means detachably securing said attachment to the walls of said car-Y riage for mountingther'eon and extending upwards therefrom.
