Figure?! is an exploded perspective view ofthe tobacco pellet, illustrating the components thereof. '1
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the tobacco pellet or cartridge 10 includes a container or 5 wrapper 12, which is preferably formed from'aluininum 1 Claim. (Cl. 131-8) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in smoking tobacco packages or containers and specifi cally relates to a novel pre-formed tobacco pellet or cartridge containing tobacco and adapted to be used in pipe bowls, and cigar and cigarette holders.
A primary object of the present invention is to provide a tobacco pellet or cartridge which includes a container in the form of a flexible sack, which is formed from aluminum foil or a like flexible, heat resistant and moisture and air resistant material and which is shaped to fit in pipe bowls or in cigar and cigarette holders.
The present invention comprehends the use of a foil wrapper which is formed from aluminum foil and provides a jacket or sack within which tobacco is disposed; the aluminum foil wrapper serving to prevent air and moisture from gaining access to the tobacco during storage and also serving to prevent the tobacco, when buming in a pipe bowl or holder, from coming in contact with the walls thereof and thereby preventing the walls from becoming charred or from coming in contact with the nicotine tars, whereby a more even and cool smoke is obtained.
It is also an object of the present invention to form the aluminum foil wrapper in an inverted cup-shaped fashion for pipes, with the lower end being open and being fixed to a porous fire resistant disc, which forms a base for the tobacco within the wrapper and which is superimposed on a filter that seats within the bottom of the pipe bowl and makes an air tight contact therewith. Ancillary to such object is the provision of means for securing the porous fire resistant disc and filter together and for aflixing the aluminum foil wrapper to such discs in an air tight fashion.
Among the many advantages of the tobacco pellet or cartridge of the present invention in connection with pipes are the ones of convenience, in that there is no spillage of tobacco in filling the pipe and no spillage when carrying the pellets in a pocket and no bulk in the pocket, such as is caused by a bulky can or package; of safety, since there is no danger of flying sparks or ashes in the open air as when driving in an automobile; of economy,
the tobacco staying fresh longer than it will in open cans or packages, since the pellet is sealed air tight; the advantage of health since the pellet, with the base porous mineral disc and filter construction, will trap nicotine tars and other impurities, leaving the stem of the pipe free from impurities.
The foregoing and ancillary objects are attained by this invention, the preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the accompanying description and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a view in perspective of the tobacco pellet or cartridge of this invention for use in connection with p p Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1, and showing a pipe bowl in phantom line so as to illustrate the positioning of the tobacco pellet or cartridge in the pipe bowl; and,
foil or the like material. The container or wrapper 12 is of one piece construction and is in' the form of an.in-' verted sack, having a curved or dome shaped closed, upper end 14 and an open'end 16. The sidewall 18. of the wrapper is substantially cylindrical and tapers from the upper closed end 14 to the open lower end 16.
. An opening 20 is centrally formed in the closed upper end 14 and is closed by a small disc-shaped closure 22, which may be formed from cigarette paper, or similar combustible material, and which is positionedbeneaththej upper wall 14 so as to close off the opening 20, as shown in Figure 2,' or may be positioned over the opening.
A porous mineral or fire resistant ,di sc, which may be formed from any suitable. porous and fire resistant ma terial, is provided and is formed with a peripheral, cir cumferentially extending groove 26.. I
A disc 28 forms the base or bottom of the pellet or cartridge and is formed of suitable filter material. The disc 28 is mounted within a retaining ring 30, which is of greater height than the disc 28 and has its upper end 32 crimped or bent into thejlower portion of the groove 26 so as to securely aflix the disc 24in superimposed rela tion with the filter disc 28. The lower edge portion 34 of the side wall 18 of the container is crimped into the upper portion of the groove 26, as shown in Figure 2 with a charge 36 of tobacco disposed within the wrapper or container.
With the lower edge portion 34 of the side wall 18 of V the wrapper or container securely folded or crimped within the groove 26 and with the closure 22 underlying the opening 20 in the top wall 14 of the container or wrapper, it can be seen that the charge of tobacco is securely wrapped and will be moisture and air proof, so that moisture and air cannot gain access to the tobacco. This will insure that the tobacco will stay fresh longer and will give a better and more refreshing smoke.
The provision of the fire resistant disc 24 will prevent the burning tobacco from coming in contact with the filter disc 28 and because of the porous nature of such disc, the smoke can be easily drawn through the stern of the pipe. With the provision of the filter disc 28, the impurities and nicotine tars in the tobacco will be filtered out, thereby insuring a cooler smoke.
In use, the pellet 10 is inserted in the bowl 38 of a pipe 40, as shown in Figure 2, with the understanding that the bowl can be shaped to accommodate the pellet or the pellet can be shaped to fit the bowl, irrespective of shape or size thereof. The pellet is inserted with the base forming disc disposed at the bottom of the bowl and in air tight contact with the walls of the bowl so that the air, when the smoker draws through the stem can only pass through the burning tobacco. The filter disc 28 seats on the bottom of the bowl and is spaced from the charge of tobacco 36 by the fire resistant disc 24.
The combustible closure 22 is burned upon the application of a flame to the opening whereupon the tobacco charge will be lit. Obviously, thenon-combustible foil wrapper 12, which is formed from aluminum, as aforestated, or any similar material, will not burn and will contain the burning tobacco, with the smoke being easily drawn through the discs 24' and 28.
The pellet can be easily removed from the pipe bowl, when desired or when all of the tobacco has been burned. The pellet can then be discarded and will not cause fires, because the non-combustible wrapper will protectively enclose the burning tobacco.
While the pellet has been illustrated and described as 2,937,648 Patented May 24,
being of a shape to fit in the bowls of pipes, it is to be understood that the pellet can be made in a more elongated and cylindrical shape to resemble a cigar or cigarette and can be inserted in a cigar or cigarette holder with the discs fitting tightly inside the holder and retaining the pellet in place and forming an air tight contact with the walls of the holder.
Thus, while the preferred embodiment of this invention has been described andillustrated herein, it is to be understood that other forms may be realized, as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed A tobacco pellet comprising a rigid, non-combustible porous base member of a cross-sectional size and .area complemental to the interior of a bore in a pipe bowl, cigar or cigarette holder, said member having a side wall and opposing inner and outer faces spaced by said side wall, said side wall being shaped complemental to the inner surface of a bore in a pipe bowl, cigar or cigarette holder so as to be adapted to snugly engage such surface with the member disposed transversely of the bore and completely blocking the bore in substantially facial contact with said surface thereof, a filter element fixedly superposed on the inner face of the base member and being formed of a cross-sectional size and area so as to confront the entire surface of said face, a charge of tobacco packed on the other face of the member, a wrapper formed from a flexible and non-combustible, airtight material enclosing the tobacco charge and secured to the porous member, said wrapper having a substantially circular cross-sectional shape and being composed of a side wall and a closed outer end wall, which overlies the tobacco charge, said end wall being formed with a centrally disposed aperture, a combustible wafer-like element underlying the outer end wall of the wrapper and closing oil the aperture and being adapted to be ignited by a flame introduced into the aperture to provide access for the flame to the tobacco for igniting the tobacco, said base member and said filter element being in the form of discs which are disposed in superimposed relation, an annular band fixedly circurnposed on the filter element and having an upper portion extending beyond said filter element and circumposed on said base member, said base member having a circumferentially disposed, peripheral groove, and said extending portion of said band being crimped into said groove to secure the base member and said filter element together.
