2 Claims. or. 155-191 This invention relates to chairms, and more particularly to a two piece collapsible chair which can be readily assembled and disassembled.

An object of the invention is to provide a two piece collapsible chair wherein no bolts or screws are employed for assembling the same.

Another object of the invention is to provide a two piece collapsible chair wherein'the two parts cooperate with each other to maintain the chair in upright position.

A further object of the invention is to 'provide'a two piece collapsible chair which can be readily disassembled and has cooperating parts to maintain the two pieces in a fiat 1 compact package for purposes of carrying or shipping. 2

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference numeral 10 broadly indicates a two piece chair having a front or seating portion 11 and a back or back rest portion 12.

The seating portion 11 comprises a pair of spaced parallel side members 13 and 14 having ends 13a and 14a I the front edge of members 30 and 31 and provide a back rest for] the chair. I

The front edges of the side members 30 and 31 are cut away to define reduced portions 34, 35 which terminate at legs 36 and 37 formed integral with the sides 30 and 31. The legs 36, 37 have lower ends 40 and 41 terminating at an angle to the width of the legs to provide fiat portions for the chair to rest properly on a surface.

A front cross memberorseatsupporting member 42 is secured in slots 43, 44 provided in the upper front edge portions of the legs 36 and 37 upon which rest the parallel side members 13 and 14 of the chair seating portion 11.

A back cross member 45 is spaced above the member 42 and is secured in slots 46 and 47 provided in the back edges of the side members 30 and 31. The member 45 is spaced above member 42 a distance substantially equal and connected together by a plurality of spaced transverse slat members 15 which serve as a seat. The side members 13 and 14 extend rearwardly from the slats 15 and have formed integral therewith a pair of legs 16 and 17 which have ends cut away to define portions 20 and 21 which serve to permit the chair to rest properly on a surface.

The upper surfaces of the side members 13 and 14 are cut away to form shoulders 22, 23 which define the front extremities of back rest engagement surface edges 24, 25 which are engaged by the back portion 12. The

rearmost points of the edges 24 and 25 are defined by recessed or reduced upper edge portions 26, 27 on the legs 16 and 17. The junctures of the edges 24, 25 and the respective upper edge portions 26, 27 define shoulder portions 28, 29, respectively.

The back rest portion 12 comprises spaced parallel side members 30 and 31 connected together at their upper ends by a transverse cross piece or head member 32. A plurality of parallel spaced slats 33 are secured along to the width of side members 13 and 14 taken at the edge portions24 and 25.

The flat surface edges 24 and 25 of the seating portion 11' engage the bottom edge of back cross member 45 to maintain the chair 10 in upright or assembled position.

It will'be observed in Figures 1 and 2 that the rearmost slat15 of the seating portion 11 engages the reduced edge portions 34 and 35 of the back portion 12 and thus acts as a stop to properly position the chair in assembled position.

To disassemble the chair shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 into the compact storing and shipping condition shown in Figure 6, the front or seating portion 11 of the chair 10 is pulled outwardly as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 until the legs 16 and 17 are clear of the back rest portion 12. Then the front portion 11 is lifted up and over the cross member 32 of the back rest portion 12 and the legs 16 and 17 of the front portion 11 are pointed downwardly and are guided between the cross members 42 and 45 of the back rest portion 12 until the shoulder portions 28, 29 of the respective legs 16 and 17 engage the cross member 45, at which time the ends of the legs 16, 17 will be substantially even with the ends of legs 40 and 41 of the back rest portion 12. It will thus be seen that the recessed portions or reduced edge portions 26 and 27 of the legs 16 and 17 of the seating or front portion 11 serve to permit the legs 16 and 17 to enter the space between the cross pieces 42 and 45 of the back rest portion 12 while the engagement of shoulder portions 28, 29 with the cross member 45 maintains the front portion 11 in substantially confined relation within said back rest portion 12 in unassembled condition. The ends 13a and 14a of the side members 13 and 14 are positioned underneath and in contact with the cross member 32 of the back portion 12. Therefore, the disassembled chair shown in Figure 6 can be carried by engaging one of the slats 15 of the seat portion 11.

It will thus be seen that there has been provided a novel two piece collapsible chair wherein the two portions so cooperate with each other to make unnecessary the use of any bolts or nails for assembling the two pieces together in upright position, and wherein other parts of the two pieces cooperate to present a compact disassembled unit which can be easily carried.

In the drawings and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention and, although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.

I claim:

first cross member a sufiicient distance to provide a space therebetween for-receiving said seating portion, said legs' ing portion therebetween for storing or shipping the chair,

a cross piece connecting thefree ends of the side members of the: back rest portion remote from ,the legs thereof, and said cross piece being arranged transverse to the slats thereofto aid in' maintaining the legs of the seating portion between and parallel to the legs of the back rest portion.
