4 Claims. (Cl. 5344) This invention relates generally to recreational equipment and relates more particularly to an inatable pillow-beach bag.

While the invention has particular utility as a beach item and is shown and described herein as such an item, it is to be understood that its utility is not confined thereto.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an inflatable pillow having a pocket in which an object, such as a folded beach towel may be carried. Of course, a bathing suit or the like may also be carried in the pocket. When the device is to be used as a bag for carrying a towel and/or bathing suit or the like, the pillow is deflated.

It is another object of the invention to provide a device of this character having a drawstring at the open end of the bag so that said open end may be closed by the drawstring and the bag carried thereby.

It is still another object of the present invention to provide a device of this character wherein the inflatable pillow or bag is provided with fastening means such as snap parts for attachment of a towel or the like having fastening means adapted to cooperate with the fastening means of said pillow or bag. The device may then be used to lie upon, the towel being spread out on the ground or sand with the inflated pillow at one end upon which the user may rest his or her head.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the inflated pillow or bag may be used separately as a oat which children especially would find an attractive water toy.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character that is relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

The characteristics and advantagese of the invention are further sufficiently referred to in connection with the following detailed description of the accompanying drawings which represent one embodiment. After considering this example, skilled persons will understand that variations may be made without departing from the principles disclosed and the employment of any structures, arrangements or modes of operation that are properly within the scope of the appended claims is contemplated.

Referring to the drawings:

Fig. l is a perspective view of the device with the pillow deflated and with a towel disposed in the pocket which is in the open position;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device disposed so that a person may lie down upon it, the pillow being inated and the towel attached thereto and spread out on the ground;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;

Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the pillow showing it turned over with respect to Fig. l; and

Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device includes an inflatable pillow part which may be of Vice any suitable material but is shown as being formed of flexible plastic material of suitable thickness. The pillow is shown as being formed of a single sheet of plastic which is folded at 10, intermediate the ends of said sheet. The portions 11 and 12 respectively of the sheet at opposite sides of the folded edge 10 comprise the sides of the pillow. The side edges 14 and 15 and the end edge 16, opposite the fold 10, are sealingly secured together by any suitable well-known means such as a heat method, for example. The sides 11 and 12 are also secured togethere along a seam 17 which is.

parallel to the edge 10 and spaced inwardly therefrom to provide a transversely extending tubular portion 18 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. At the inner corner of the junction of the seams 15 and 17, there is an arcuately shaped seam 19 which defines a substantially semicircular portion 20 to which one part, 21, of a snap device is secured. At the opposite corner of the same edge of the pillow device, there is an arcuate seam 23 which denes a portion 24 to which a similar snap element or part 21 is secured. Thus, the portion 20 and 24 of the pillow are sealed olf by the seams 19 and 23 respectively from the interior of said pillow so that there cannot be any escape of said past the snap part 21. An air valve 25 of any suitable well-known type is attached to the side 11 of the pillow so that said pillow may be inflated by the introduction of air through said valve which is adapted to be closed to prevent the escape of air from the interior of the pillow when it is desired to maintain the latter in an inflated condition. The valve is of such type as to be openable for the escape of the air when it is desired to dellate said pillow.

A pocket 30 is provided by securing a sheet 31 of any suitable material such as ilexible plastic or the like to one side of said pillow. As shown, the sheet of material 31 is disposed adjacent the side 12 of the pillow and is marginally secured thereto by the searns 14, 15 and 16, the seams 19 and 2.3 also secure the adjacent portions of the sheet 31 to the pillow sides. A similar seam 33 of arcuate shape is provided at the corner opposite the seam 19 and adjacent the seam 17 to secure the sides 11 and 12 and the sheet 31 together at this point and to reinforce the device at said corner. The sheet 31 has an end portion 34 adjacent the tubular portion 18 of the pillow, which is turned black and secured oy a transverse `seam 35 to thereby provide a tubular part 36. A continuous cord 37 passes through the tubular portions 18 and 36 and provides a drawstring for closing the open end of the pocket 30.

When it is desired to use the device as a carrying bag, the pillow is deflated and provides one side of the pocket 30 in which a towel and/ or bathing suit or the like may be carried. The drawstring may be pulled to substantially close the open end of the pocket 30. When it is desired to use the device as a pillow, the pillow portion is inflated. Generally, it is desirable to remove the contents of the pocket 361 before inflating the device.

The towel, indicated at 41D, is provided with a snap part 41 at the `corners of one end. The snap parts 41 are adapted to cooperate with the snap parts 21 and to be attachable thereto so that the pillow and towel may thereby be secured together. The towel may then be spread out on the ground or the sand of the beach with the inated pillow attached at one end so that a person may lie down on the towel and use the pillow as a head rest. The towel, of course, may also be used by the bather for drying purposes.

The pillow and pocket parts of the present arrangement may be used as a float by detaching the towel. The oat may be used by bathers in the water.

It is thought that the invention and many of its atv tendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description and it is thought that it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention without departing from the scope and spirit thereof or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the embodiment hereinbefore described being merely for purposes of illustration.

I claim:

1. A beach item, comprising: a pillow formed of a single sheet of flexible plastic folded along a transverse, central line and having a sealing seam parallel to the fold and spaced therefrom to provide a tubular end part, the portions of the sheet at the sides of said fold being marginally sealed together to form a sealed bag With the seal extending parallel to the fold; generally arcuately shaped sealing means adjacent the respective ends of one edge to provide area sealed off from the interior of the bag; fastener parts secured to said areas; an air valve for said bag; a sheet of exible plastic material of substantially the same size as one side portion of the pillow and having the side edges and one end edge marginally secured to the adjacent marginal edges of the pillow to thereby form a pocket with said pillow, the pocket being open at the end of the pillow having the tubular portion and the last mentioned sheet having the adjacent end portion thereof turned back and secured to provide a tubular part; a drawstring diposed in the respective tubular parts of the pillow and last mentioned sheet; and a towel having fastener parts at one end adapted to be secured to the fastener parts on the pillow.

2. A beach item, comprising: a pillow formed of a single sheet of exible plastic folded along a transverse, central line and having a sealing seam parallel to the fold and spaced therefrom to provide a tubular end part, the portions of the sheet at the sides of said fold being marginally sealed together to form a sealed bag with the seal extending parallel to the fold; generally arcuately shaped sealing means adjacent the respective ends of one edge to provide area sealed off from the interior of the bag; fastener parts secured to said areas; an air valve for said bag; a sheet of flexible plastic material of substantially the same size as one side portion of the pillow and having the side edges and one end edge marginally secured to the adjacent marginal edges of the pillow to thereby form a pocket with said pillow, the pocket beingv l open at the end of the pillow having the tubular portion at one end; fastener parts secured to said bag at one edge and spaced apart longitudinally of said edge; an air valve for said bag; a sheet of flexible material of substantially the same size as the pillow and having the side edges and one end edge secured to the adjacent edges of the pillow to thereby form a pocket with said pillow, the pocket being open at the end of the pillow having the tubular portion and the last mentioned sheet having the adjacent end portion thereof provided with a transversely extending tubular part; a drawstring disposed in the respective tubular parts of the pillow and last mentioned sheet; and a sheet of flexible material having fastener parts adjacent one edge adapted to be secured to the fastener parts on the pillow.

In a beach item: a pillow formed of flexible, air impervious material, and having sides secured together to form an inflatable bag and having a tubular end part at one end; fastener parts secured to said bag at one edge and spaced apart longitudinally of said edge; an air valve for said bag; a sheet of flexible material of substantially the same size as the pillow and having the side edges and one end edge secured to the adjacent edges of the pillow to thereby form a pocket with said pillow, the pocket being open at the end of the pillow having the tubular portion and the last mentioned sheet having the adjacent end portion thereof provided with a transversely extending tubular part; and a drawstring disposed in the respective tubular parts of the pillow and last mentioned sheet.
