Application August 14, 1957, Serial No. 678,073
2 Claims. (Cl. 81-71) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a wrench set comprising a single holder or socket adapted to receive any one of a plurality of Allen wrenches of various sizes.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a wrench set of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is an elevational view, showing an embodiment of the present invention in use;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the holder or socket;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the holder or socket; and
Figure 4 is a view in elevation, showing a set of Allen wrenches for insertion in the holder shown in Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a metallic holder 5 of suitable metal. Extending longitudinally into the elongated holder 5 from one end thereof is a polygonal socket 6. The socket 6 includes progressively reduced sections 7 for the reception of one end portion of a plurality of Allen wrenches 8 of various sizes. In the embodiment shown, setscrews 9 releasably secure the wrenches 8 in their respective socket sections 7.
The other end portion of the holder 5 is provided with a polygonal socket 10 for operatively connecting a ratchet handle 11 or other suitable turning tool to said holder. An opening or passage 12 between the sockets 6 and 10 accommodates a suitable knockout tool should the wrenches stick in the holder 5 after the setscrews 9 have been loosened.
It is thought that the use of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the Allen wrench 8 of the desired size is selected and secured in its respective section 7 of the polygonal socket 6 by tightening the respective setscrew 9 thereon. The
Patented Mar. 24, 1959 wrench 8 is then engaged with the work, as indicated at 13 in Figure 1 of the drawing, and the holder 5 is turned in an obvious manner. It will be observed that the wrenches 8 progressively increase in length from the largest to the smallest thereof. Thus, all of said wrenches will protrude the same distance from the holder 5. The wrenches may be readily removed from the holder by loosening the setscrews 9. If necessary, a knockout tool may be inserted through the opening 12 for dislodging the wrenches. If desired, spring-pressed ball detents may be substituted for the set screws 9 for securing the wrenches 8 in the holder 5.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and
accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A wrench set comprising: an elongated metallic holder of circular cross section having a polygonal socket extending longitudinally thereinto from one end thereof, said socket including a series of progressively reduced polygonal sections, a set of polygonal wrenches of sizes corresponding to the polygonal sections and selectively insertable in the socket and engageable in the respective sections thereof, said holder further having a polygonal socket in its other end portion for the reception of a turning tool, said holder still further having an opening therein communicating with the sockets for the passage of a knockout tool for dislodging the wrenches.
2. A wrench set comprising: an elongated metallic holder of circular cross section having a polygonal socket extending longitudinally thereinto from one end thereof, said socket including a series of progressively reduced polygonal sections, a set of polygonal wrenches of sizes corresponding to the polygonal sections and selectively insertable in the socket and engageable in the respective sections thereof, said holder further having a polygonal socket in its other end portion for the reception of a turning tool, said holder still further having an opening therein communicating with the sockets for the passage of a knockout tool for dislodging the wrenches, said wrenches progressively increasing in length from the largest diameter to the smallest thereof, and means for releasably securing the wrenches in the socket sections.
