This invention relates to an improved basin cover and is more particularly concerned with a cover for a wash basin in a beauty salon, or the like.

it is common practice to provide wash basins in close proximity to the working area for the purpose of washing and rinsing the customers hair. In accordance with, normal construction, the wash basin is mounted adjacent a wall and is associated with suitable shelving or cabinet work within or adjacent the wall and in which various products, articles and tools of the trade are housed and displayed. Every effort is made to make the equipment and overall construction as attractive as possible.

Due to the basic or fundamental unattractiveness of wash basins, efiorts have been made to hide them from view when they are not in use. Such efforts have, for the most part, involved the provision of a simple, rectangular basin cover pivotally carried or connected to the wall above the basin and adapted to be pivoted upwardly and rearwardly to expose the basin when it is desired to be used. Such covers, when they are down, provide a suitable bar or tray upon which objects can be placed.

Such covers while having found wide use have several disadvantages, one of which is the fact that when the basin is to be used, the cover must be cleared, that is,

any and all material placed thereon must be removed. Another disadvantage is the awkwardness of the operation and the unsightly appearance of such covers when they are lifted out of engagement over the basins. Still another disadvantage of such covers is the tendency for them to drop or swing closed when the basin is in use and thereby injure the customer, beautician, or both.

It; is a general object of the present invention to provide a cover adapted to be shiftably engaged over a wash basinto obscure it from view.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved basin cover of the character referred to for use in a beauty salon, which cover provides a bar. top or tray to carry and support various articles.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a cover for a basin of the character referred to which is adapted to slide laterally into and out of engagement over a wash basin and having a portion adapted to serve as a closure for a cabinet above the basin.

The structure providedv by the present invention involves, generally, a cabinet A, a wash basin B, a closure. and cover unit C for the cabinet and the basin and mounting means D shiftably securing the unit C to the cabinet.

The cabinet A is an elongate vertically disposed rectangular structure having flat, vertically disposed front and rear walls 10 and 11, end walls 12 and a flat horizontally disposed top wall 13. The cabinet A is divided into upper and lower portions X and Y byan elongatehorizontally disposed partition 14 spaced below the top wall 13. The portion of the front wall 10 below the.

In the case illustrated, suitable shelves 16 are provided in the upper portion of the cabinet and suitable glass closure panels 17 are slidably engaged in the opening.

In addition to the foregoing, the cabinet A is pro-- vided with a longitudinally disposed rail 18 fixed to'thei wall 10 to extend from one end of' the cabinet to the other. The rail 18 is positioned to occur below the opening 15 inthe upper portion of. the front wall of the cabinet and above the wash basin B.

The cover and closure unit C, that I provide is a substantially L-shaped member having a fiat, vertically disposed rectangular closure panel 22 with straight horizontally disposed top andv bottom edges 23. and 24 and.

The closure panel 22 is positioned adjacent the upper portion of the front wall of the cabinet A to overlie and close a portion of the opening therein. The upper or top edge of the panel 22 terminates above the upper edge of the panel 10 while the lower edge terminates above the basin B and below the rail 18 on the lower portion of the front panel 10 of the cabinet.

The cover panel 26 is a simple flat rectangular member and is fixed to the lower edge 24 of the closure panel 22 by means of suitable angle brackets 34 so that the lower edge of the closure panel abuts the top surface of the cover panel, adjacent the rear edge thereof. The angle brackets 34 are secured to the panels 22 and 26 by means of suitable screw fasteners 35.

The cover panel 26 projects forwardly from the closure panel 22 to normally overlie the top of the basin B and the spigot and valves and 21 related thereto.

The skirt 33 is a simple flat rectangular memberfixed to the front edge 27 of the cover panel 26 to depend therefrom and normally overlie the front of the basin B to obscure the basin from view, when the cover and closure unit C is in its normal working position.

The mounting means D adapted to shiftably support the cover enclosure C on the cabinet A is shown as including a track 40 extending along the upper edge of the front wall 10 of the cabinet A and a runner 41 fixed to the top edge 23 of the closure panel 22 and engaging the track. The means D further includes a plurality of laterally spaced vertically disposed rollers 42 fixed to of the front panel 10 which projects above the top 13 and is shown as including a rearwardly disposed upwardly inclined face 44. The runner 41 on the closure panel 22 is an elongate fiat horizontally disposed member fixed to the upper edge 23 of the panel 22 to project rearwardly therefrom and overlie the top of the cabinet and is provided with a downwardly projecting longitudinally disposed rib 45 having a forwardly disposed inclined face 46 opposing and slidably engaging the said rearwardly disposed face 44 on the track. A suitable'longitudinally disposed cleat 47 is secured to the top wall 13 of the cabinet to occur adjacent the rear'side of the rib 45 on the runner in proper engagement with the track 40. The track and rail 40 and 41 are formed of wood and can be suitably waxed or soaped to allow for free relative sliding and shifting therebetween.

The upper end portions of the end walls 12-of the cabinet A, which portions of said wall project above the top wall 13 of the cabinet, serve as stops and prevent excessive lateral shifting and resulting displacement of the runner from the rail.

With the construction set forth above, it will beap' parent that I have provided a novel closure and cover construction for a cabinet and wash basin which con- 1 struction can be easily and conveniently shifted laterallyof the cabinet to open and close a compartment in the cabinet, or a portion thereof, and which can 'be shifted laterally to uncover or to cover and obscure a wash basin related to and projecting from the cabinet. It

A cover for a wash basin projecting forwardly from a flat vertically disposed surface including, and L-shaped unit having a fiat vertically disposed panel adjacent the surface and a fiat horizontally disposed panel fixed to and projecting forwardly from the said vertical panel to overlie the basin and establish a shelf and mounting means shiftably supporting the unit on the surface and including, an elongate horizontally disposed track on said surface, a guide runner at the top of the vertical panel and cooperatively engaging the track, an elongate rail fixed to and projecting forwardly from the surface below the track and a plurality of vertically disposed supporting rollers fixed to the vertical panel and engaging the said top of the rail, the unit being shiftable laterally of the surface and the basin to cover and uncover the basin.

A wash basin and cabinet unit comprising an L- shaped cover and closure member, a cabinet including a flat vertically disposed front wall with upper and lower portions, said upper portion having an access opening therein, a wash basin fixed to the lower portion of the front wall of the cabinet to project forwardly therefrom, said Lshaped unit including a flat vertically disposed closure panel adjacent the wall of the cabinet to normally overlie and close the opening therein, a flat horizontally disposed cover panel fixed to and projecting forwardly from the closure panel to normally overlie the top of the basin and establish a shelf, a vertically disposed skirt depending from the forward edge of the cover panel to normally occur adjacent the front of the basin, and mounting means shiftably supporting the unit on the wall of the cabinet and including a track on the wall of the cabinet, a runner at the top of the closure panel and cooperatively engaging the track, and a plurality of rollers fixed to the closure panel and engaging the said wall, the unit being shiftable laterally of the cabinet to selectively open and close the opening in the cabinet and to uncover and cover the basin.

A wash basin and cabinet unit comprising an L- shaped cover and closure member, a cabinet including a flat vertically disposed front wall with upper and lower portions, said upper portion having an access opening therein above the basin, a wash basin fixed to the lower portion of the front Wall of the cabinet to project forwardly therefrom, said L-shaped unit including a flat vertically disposed closure panel having a forwardly disposed mirror thereon adjacent the wall of the cabinet to normally overlie and close the opening therein, a flat horizontally disposed cover panel fixed to and projecting forwardly from the closure panel to normally overlie the basin and establish a shelf, and mounting means shiftably supporting the unit on the top wall of the cabinet and including a track on the wall of the cabinet, a runner at the top of the closure panel and cooperatively engaging the track, an elongate rail with a flat top fixed to and projecting forwardly from the wall at a point between the opening and the basin, and a plurality of horizontally disposed rollers fixed to the closure and engaging the said wall below the rail and a plurality of vertically disposed rollers fixed to the closure panel and engaging the top of the rail, the unit being shiftable laterally of the cabinet to selectively open and close the opening in the cabinet and to uncover and cover the basin.
