1 Claim. (Cl. 137514.7)
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in check valves for use particularly in the delivery lines of pumps and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising novel means, operable by the water or other fluid pressure, for instantly closing the valve when the pump stops.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a check valve of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, highly efficient and reliable in operation and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical longitudinal section through a check valve constructed in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 2 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a body of suitable metal which is designated generally by reference character 3. The body 3 is interposed in the delivery line 4 from a pump and said body comprises an inlet 5 and an outlet 6. The body 3 further comprises a partition 7 having formed therein a port or opening formed to provide a seat 8.
Rising from the body 3 and communicating therewith on the outlet side of the partition 7 is a cylinder or cham her 9 which is aligned with the seat 8. The top of the cylinder 9 is closed by a removable cover 10. A water tube or pipe 11 has one end connected to the cover and its other end connected to the delivery line 4 on the outlet side of the body 3.
Mounted for reciprocation in the cylinder 9 is a substantially cup-shaped plunger or piston 12 the bottom 13 of which is provided with a plurality of perforations 14. Depending from the bottom 13 of the piston 12 is a valve member 15 of the poppet type which is engageable with the seat 8. A coil. spring 16 is mounted under compression in the cylinder 9 and the piston 12 for yieldingly urging the valve member 15 toward the seat 8.
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when the pump is operating water therefrom, as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1 of the drawing, enters the body 3 at 5, raises the valve 15 to open position against the tension of the coil spring 16 as it passes through the seat or opening 8 and is discharged from said body at 6. The pipe or tube 11 discharges water under pressure from the line 4 on the outlet side of the check ited States Patent 0 valve into the cylinder 9 and the substantially cup-shaped piston 12. Thus, when the stops and the pressure drops on the intake side of the check valve, the water pressure in the cylinder 9, with the assistance of the coil spring 16, forces said piston downwardly for engaging the valve member 15 with the seat 8 in an obvious manner for preventing the back flow of said water. The construction and arrangement is such as to prevent movement of the valve member 15 with the pulsations of the pump thereby insuring quiet operation.
The perforations 14 permit the water to drain from the piston 14 and the cylinder 9.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A check valve comprising a hollow valve body for interposition in a pump delivery line and having inlet and outlet sides, a partition in said body having an opening therein for passage of liquid from said inlet to said outlet side, a cylinder of a uniform internal diameter integral with said body and having free communication at one end with the outlet side of said body, the other end of said cylinder being open and leaving an outturned laterally projecting flange, a flat plate closing said open end and having fasteners detachably connecting it to said flange outwardly of said cylinder, an elongated hollow piston of uniform external diameter slidable in said cylinder through said cylinder end opening into said outlet side of said valve body and movable toward and away from said opening, said piston having the major portion of its length received and guided at all times in said cylinder, said piston having a flat bottom wall and being open at its top into said cylinder, a helical spring in said cylinder and piston bearing against said plate and said bottom wall and yieldingly urging said piston towards said opening, said bottom wall having an integral valve stem depending therefrom towards said opening and a valve integral with said stem and spaced from said bottom wall to close said opening in response to movement of said piston towards said opening and being movable outwardly of said opening under liquid pressure in the inlet side of the body for passage of liquid through the opening, a pipe connecting the line on the outlet side of said body to said other end of said cylinder through said plate for introducing liquid under pressure to said piston to supplement said spring in moving said piston, said bottom wall having restricted downwardly opening drain passages therethrough for draining liquid accumulating in the interior of said piston,
I said plate having the plural functions of constituting a stop means engaged by said piston for limiting movement of the latter from said opening, a retainer for said spring, a closure for said cylinder and a connection for said pipe and cylinder.
