Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. LEIP, OF'LEADVILLE, COLORADO.
HAIR-TONIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,045, dated :"eptember 18, 1883.
Application filed July 17, 1883.
To 0. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LEIP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Leadville, in the county of Lake and'State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful compound of vegetable matter for the preservation growth, and renewal of human hair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in th preparation of onions, sage, and potatoes by steeping and straining the liquid product or residuum thereof, and applying the same to the human head Where the same has become thus far in my experiments I find they contribute better results in their natural state.
L The odor of onion in this compound may be neutralized by theaddition of any of the standard perfumes; but I prefer to use the prepa- (No specimens.)
' ration with the three ingredients, as set forth.
In using the compound the scalp should be previously vigorously excited by a stiff hairbrush, and during its use the head should not be washed. The surrounding hair should be closely clipped and the compound well rubbed in by the fingers orhands, say, three times a day; though I believe if applied more frequently the desired results will be more quiokTy attained. Exposing the head to sunshine during the treatment will prove beneficial, and the application should be daily for about two months before positive improvement in the hair-growth canbe expected, though in some cases it may be sooner noticed. No injury can result from the use of my compound, as it contains no chemical ingredient.
I am aware that sage has been heretofore used in hair-tonics, likewise onions, as shown by Patents Nos. 112,749 and 129,310, and such by themselves I do not claim; but
What I do claim as my improvement isp The hair-tonic hereinbefore described, consisting of an infusion of potatoes, onions, and
sage, in substantially the proportions stated.
