2 Claims. (Cl. 24--250) This invention relates to a clip, and more particularly to a clip adapted for use in securing a diaper or the like fabric to a shirt or other supporting means.

Heretofore, such clips have been provided in which the gripping means has comprised an inturned scalloped edge on the ends of the base plate and clamping jaw of the clip, which scalloped ends or teeth have been satisfactory for holding the diaper to the shirt against a downward pull or a pull longitudinally of the clip, but have been ineffective in holding together a pair of overlapped diaper portions which portions have been subjected to a lateral pull.

The present invention overcomes this difiiculty by providing a novel tooth arrangement on the clip which not only holds the supported fabric against longitudinal pull but also against lateral pull.

This is accomplished by providing the clip with spaced teeth on the base and jaw, which teeth have their inner faces substantially perpendicular to the base and jaw and which faces are spaced apart a sufficient distance to permit the fabric to be disposed therebetween in a manner which effectively permits the perpendicular faces of the teeth to interlock with and bite into the fabric so as to prevent lateral displacement of the fabric in response to transverse pulls.

Other features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the specification and claims when considered in connection with the drawings in which:

While the clip of'the present invention may be used for many purposes, it is particularly useful in fastening a diaper to a shirt or other garment. In order to accomplish this, there is provided a flat base having a clamping jaw 11 mounted thereon to pivot at the rear of the clip. The base is provided with upwardly extending side ears 12, 13 on which is pivotally mounted an actuating member 14 interconnected to the clamping jaw so that when the actuating member is in raised position, as shown in Fig. 2, the jaw is in spread position and when the actuating member is moved to the position of Fig. 3 the jaw is moved to clamping position due to the action of the camming surfaces 15a on the downwardly extending rear flange 15 of the actuating member. The actuating member may be provided with downwardly turned front and side flanges 16 to overlie the edge of the clamping jaw and provide a protective cover therefor as shown in Fig. 3.

The rear end of the base is provided with a safety pin 17 by which the clip may be secured to the shirt or garment. The forward end of the base is provided with an upstanding portion 18 having at each end thereof a gripping tooth 19 located adjacent the sides of the base and the clamping jaw is provided with a downturned flange 20 having at each end thereof and adjacent the side edges thereof a gripping tooth 21 to cooperate with the gripping tooth 19 on the base to grip a fabric 22 disposed therebetween.

In accordance with the present invention, the inner side edges 19:: and 21a of the teeth are formed substantially perpendicular to the base and the jaw and as shown in the drawing the gripping teeth on the base and clamping jaw are spaced a substantial distance apart. As herein illustrated, it is at least twice the width of a tooth, thus providing a space for the fabric to move therein into interlocked gripping relation with the substantially perpendicular faces of the teeth as shown in Fig. 4. Preferably, the teeth on the upper section have their perpendicular edges disposed slightly inwardly from the teeth on the base as shown in Fig. 4 to provide out of line engagement with the fabric. The teeth when in gripping relation not only eifectively hold the fabric against longitudinal movement with respect to the clip but also hold it against transverse or lateral movement. This is particularly effective when two pieces of fabric, such as the ends of a diaper which are disposed around the waist of the baby, are overlapped and gripped by the clip as shown in Fig. 4. Lateral movement or pull on the two ends of the fabric away from the clip effectively causes the fabric to interlock, as shown in the drawing, and prevents relative movement of the fabric as might release the ends from the clip.

Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of 'the claims and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

I claim:

1. A clip adapted to be pinned to a fabric-supporting means comprising a base, a clamping jaw pivotally mounted on the base, said base and jaw being bent toward one another on the forward end and having thereon cooperating fabric-gripping means, a pin secured to the other end of the base, and an actuating means pivotally mounted on the base and connected to the movable jaw to move said jaw into and out of gripping relation with a fabric disposed therebetween, the improvement wherein said gripping means comprises a pair of broad teeth on the bent portion of said base adjacent the edges thereof and a pair of broad cooperating teeth on the clamping jaw, the opposing inner edges of said teeth being substantially perpendicular to said base and jaw whereby lateral movement of the gripped fabric is prevented.

A clip adapted to be pinned to a fabric-supporting means comprising a base, a clamping jaw pivotally mounted on the base, said base and jaw having at the forward end thereof cooperating fabric-gripping means, a pin secured to the other end of the base, and an actuating means pivotally mounted on the base and connected to the movable jaw to move said jaw into and out of gripping relation with a fabric disposed therebetween, the improvement wherein said gripping means comprises a pair of broad teeth on the base at said forward end adjacent the edges thereof and projecting toward said jaw, said teeth being spaced apart a distance at least equal to twice the width of said teeth and a pair of broad cooperating teeth on the clamping jaw at said forward end thereof spaced apart a distance slightly less than the distance between the teeth on the base, the inner opposed edges of said teeth being substantially perpendicular to said base and jaw and interlock with the fabric whereby lateral movement of the gripped fabric is prevented.
