SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 281,906, dated July 24, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY W. MERRITT, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Device for Ohurning, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My device relates to that class of instruments in which agitating devices are combined with and made to work in vessels containing fluid or semi-fluid substances, like cream, paste, egg, 85c.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical view of my invention, the lower part being shown partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
A vessel, A, is made of any suitable form and size, and is provided with ears B B, into which eccentric-headed bolts B B are fixed. These bolts B B pass through openings in the cross-bar D, and when turned, as shown at B,
- Fig. 2, serve to lock the cross-bar D in place.
This also serves to hold the cover D.
To the cross-bar D, I attach two uprights, E and E, which serve for bearings for the shaft M, and also to hold the cross-bar F, said cross-bar F being held in place by the screwnut H. An extension, F, of this cross-bar serves as a bearing for the upper end of the vertical shaft K, the lower end of said shaft working in a step-bearing, K.
K K are arms extending from the shaft K, and serve to connect it with the beaters K K the upper end of the boaters being steadied by arms is, which extendfrom a collar, k,which surrounds the quill p. The shaft K has upon its upper end a bevel-gear, L, which is driven by the gear M, shaft M, and crank M. The revolution of the shaft K causes the vertical beaters K to' revolve. The number and form of these beaters K may be varied at will.
P represents a disk-dasher, which is attached to a quill, P, on the shaft K. The upper end of this quill is provided with a pin, P and a pitman, P, the upper end of the pitman being connected by a crank-pin, 1 to the gear M.
From the above it may be seen that by turning the crank M the revolving beaters K K will be set in motion around the vertical axis of the device, while the disk-dasher P will be caused to move up and down in the direction of the vertical axis of the device. Thus the substance within the vessel A will be subject to two kinds of motion, one acting at right angles to the other, which must necessarily cause a thorough mixing and beating.
The upright revolving dashers K K are provided with openings, as shown in Fig. 1, so that they may, in revolving and acting with the centrally-located vertical moving dasher P, cause a more thorough and complete agita tion of the cream.
I claim The churn-body A, provided with ears B, in which headed bolts B are j ournaled, in combination with the cover D, having cross-bar D, which is providedwith openings at each end, and adapted to hold said cover in place by means of said bolts B, the uprights E E, connected by cross-bar F, having extension F, the shaft M, having handle M and journaled in said uprights, the shaft K, journaled in extension F, and step K, and having a sleeve, P, sliding thereon, gears L M, which drive said shaft K, and a pin, P pitman P", and wrist-pin P*, for conveying motion to said sleeve P, the dashers K connected to shaft K and receiving rotary motion therefrom, and the dasher P, attached to the end of sleeve P, and moving up and down within the rotary dashers, substantially as herein specified.
