- COMBINED LIGHT AND AIR DISTRI'BUTOR Filed Jan. 28, 1955 INVENTOR Iain Maxwell Stewart TZZIJZJMFMY 1 ATT'ORNEYS United States Patent C (IQMBINED LIGHT AND A DETREBUTQR Iain Maxweii Stewart, Glasgow, Scotland Application January 28, 1955, Serial No. 484,692
Claims prior-it application Great Britain February 1, 1954 1 Claim. (Cl. 2402) This invention relates to an air distributor device applicable to the end of an air delivery duct or to an air box, in which the air distributor proper is formed as a partly conical or flared bowl, the peripheral edge of the base of which is co-planar or approximately co-planar with a deflector plate.
An object of the invention is to provide a combined air distributor andlighting fitting which will keep the observer immediately conscious of the double function of the fitting.
In an air distributor device according to the invention the distributor proper is of translucent material, and an electric lamp is fitted to the exterior of the bowl.
An air distributor device according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a part elevation, part vertical section of the device.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a distributor having a bowl of cylindro-conical form. The bowl is made of translucent material, preferably a translucent plastic, clear or coloured. 2 denotes an annular reflector shell attached to the exterior of the bowl and defining therewith an annular chamber 3 wherein there is accommodated a fluorescent electric light tube 4 of ring form. 5 denotes an air-deflecting plate which is substantially co-planar with the peripheral edge of the base of the bowl. The deflector plate 5 maybe of translucent or opaque material and is carried by a stem 6 supported in the hub 7 of a spider S mounted in the cylindrical neck 9 of the bowl.
For convenience, it is here assumed that the air passage of the distributor 1 is bounded by a cone in which event the deflector plate 5 will be circular. If the boundary of the air passage is polygonal, the deflector plate will be shaped conformably.
What is claimed is:
A combined air distributor and lighting device, comprising a bowl of translucent material including an air inlet neck and a flared air delivery portion together providing an air supply passageway, a deflector plate substantially co-planar with the free peripheral edge of the air delivery portion of said bowl, the periphery of the plate being spaced from said edge to provide a passage for the flow of air, a spider having a hub mounted in said neck,
a stem supported in said hub and carrying said deflector plate, a light reflecting shell mounted over the flared portion of said bowl and in part spaced therefrom to define therewith a chamber, and an electric lamp mounted in said chamber, whereby light from said lamp is reflected from the inner surface of the light reflecting shell through the translucent material of the flared air delivery portion of the bowl into the air supply passageway.
