COMBINED ROBE AND BAG 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 2l, 1955 ATTORNEY COMBINED ROBE AND BAG Boyd 0. Sartell, Faribault, Minn.assignor to Faribault Woolen Mill Company, Faribault, Minn., a corporation of Minnesota Application April 21, 1955, Serial No. 502,827
3 Claims. (Cl. 2--69.5)
This invention relates to a combined robe and bag.
The invention is more particularly concerned'with a combined robe and bag for protecting a person against the weather elements, especially at oudtoor sports events such as football games and the like, whereat the. spectators are usually in a sitting position andaccordingly cannot maintain body warmth through physical movement thereof.
A primary feature of the invention is a robe together with a panel secured to the robe adjacent one edge thereof and midway of opposed adjacent edges and which provides, with the opposed portion of the robe, a bag or pouch for the reception of a persons feet, and the portions of the robe at opposite sides of said panel adapted to be wrapped about lthe body of the person.
A further feature of the invention is a body-protecting robe of substantial dimensions, and a rectangular panel of relatively small dimensions disposed adjacent one edge of the robe and intermediate opposed edges thereof, the panel being secured to the robe about three of its four edges, whereby same provides, with the opposed robe portion, a bag into which the remaining portion of the robe is disposable for transportation of the combined robe and bag.
A still further feature of the invention is a combined robe and bag of the character above referred to wherein the bag is provided with draw strings adapting same for concealment of the robe as well as for convenient carrying.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a plan view of the combined robe and bag in a position for use.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view as observed in the plane of line 22 on Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on a substantially enlarged scale as observed in the plane of line 3-3 on Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the combined robe and bag in a position for transportation thereof.
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 4 but from the opposite side thereof and wherein the draw strings are drawn up.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, designates a robe which is preferably square and approximately iifty inches by fifty inches in dimensions. The robe 10 is preferably of one hundred percent Wool for maximum insulating qualities, but it is to be understood that any other suitable material may be used.
A relatively narrow rectangular strip of fabric 11 is disposed on one face of the robe with one of the longer edges thereof coinciding with an edge of the robe, as is particularly indicated in Fig. 3. A substantially square panel of fabric 12 is disposed over the strip 11 with one edge thereof coinciding with the said coinciding edges of the strip and robe and the adjacent opposed edges of the panel coincide with the opposite ends of the strip.
nited States Patent A beaded welt 13 is disposed between the alined edges ofstrip 11 and panel 12* as well asbetween said opposed edges ofthe panel and the robe 10, and the said edge together withV the weltl strip are secured to the robe 10 by lines of stitching 14. Thev opposite longer edge of the strip 11 is secured to the robe by aline of stitching 15, and the bead 16 of the: beaded welt extends along all the stitched edges of the strip and panel as is apparent from Fig. 4.
A folded-over fabric `strip 17 is stitched to the robe 10 as at 18, anda similar folded-over fabric strip 19 is stitched to the free. edge of panel 12 asat 20.
From the above disclosure, it Will be apparent that a portion 10?3L of the robe 10 and. the panel 12 provide a bag, and` in order to close such bag, as. will later be referredv to, the strips 17' and 19 are provided with alined eyeletsZlin which are movably Ydisposeddraw strings 22.
The' adjacent faces of strip 11: and panel 12 in the operative position indicated in` Fig.' 3y are preferably rubberized to render same. waterproof, but'it is to be understood. that any other suitable material may be used.
With the combined robe and bag in the position of Fig. lf a persons feet'may-'bze inserted into'thebag, after which the opposed.portions.10iJ ofthe robeV 10 may be folded over substantially on the lines L into overlying relation to the persons body.
The bag may, however, under some circumstances, be used as a hood, and in which instance the robe would serve as a cape.
When it is desired to package the robe for storage or transportation thereof, the major portion of the robe as is shown in Fig. 1 is folded and disposed within the bag provided by the panel 12 and portion 10a of the robe. Such disposition of the robe may be accomplished by folding the robe on lines transversely thereto and thereafter turning the strip 11 and panel 12 to a position in encompassing relation to the folded bag portion. As an alternative procedure, the bag may be turned with a resulting drawing of the lateral portions of the robe there into, and thereafter the protruding robe portion folded on lines L as well as lines perpendicular thereto and then moved into the bag.
It is to be observed that the rubberized faces of strip 11 and panel 12 are disposed outwardly in the bagged condition of the robe.
The robe may be and preferably is of an ornamental design and when same is folded into packaged condition the panelA 11 and portion 10a of the robe will provide a pleasing appearance, as will be observed from Fig. 4.
For transporting the bagged robe, the draw strings 22 are pulled with a resulting collapsing of the mouth of the bag, as indicated in Fig. 5.
It is to be particularly observed that in the operative position of the robe, as indicated in Fig. 1, the bag bottom coincides with one edge of the robe, whereby upon insertion of a persons feet into the bag the opposite side portions of the robe may be folded over the persons body in the absence of any portions thereof protruding below the bag and becoming soiled, wetted, or damaged by contact with the ground. Furthermore, such coincidence of the bag bottom and an edge of the robe makes it possible to turn the bag for disposition of the robe therein, and when the robe is in bagged condition a convenient and neat package is provided, wherein one side thereof is formed of the rubberized fabric panel 12 and the opposite side thereof is formed of the rubberized fabric strip 1l and a portion of the robe with the bead 16 extending along the bottom and opposite sides of the packaging bag for further enhancing the appearance thereof.
While l have disclosed my invention in accordance with a single specific preferred embodiment thereof, such is to Patented May 14., 19er be understood as illustrative only and not restrictive, the
scope of the invention being dened in the sub-joined claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patentis:
