3 Claims. (Cl. 160-395) This invention relates to construction materials, and more particularly to a means for fastening wire mesh to a frame.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastening means for use in securing wire mesh to a frame of a door, window or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wire mesh fastening means which includes cooperating or coacting members that are adapted to wedge or releasably hold the wire mesh screen therebetween so that in the event the screen is to be removed or replaced, the parts can be readily disassembled without requiring any spe cial skills or special tools.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wire mesh fastening means which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same.
Figure l is a plan view of a frame such as a window or door frame, with parts broken away and in section, showing the wire mesh fastening means of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing one of the brackets for connecting together adjacent support members.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view, with parts broken away and in section, illustrating the position of a portion of the wire mesh screen in the support member.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, and showing the body member and support separated.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral designates the support member which can be made of any suitable material such as a suitable metal such as aluminum, and the support member 10 includes a first wall 11 which has extending outwardly or transversely therefrom a second and third wall 12 and 13, Figure 3. Extending transversely from an end of the third wall 13 is a fourth wall 14 which terminates in a fifth wall 15, and extending outwardly from the fifth wall 15 is a sixth wall 16.
Interposed between the second and third Walls 12 and 13 and extending outwardly from the first wall 11 is a seventh wall 17 which has an eighth wall 18 extending therefrom. Also extending from the seventh wall 17 is a ninth wall 19, there being a tenth wall 9 extending transversely from the second wall in the direction of the seventh wall. The walls 14, 15 and 16 coact to define therebetween a longitudinally extending groove 29 for a purpose to be later described, and the numeral 21 designates a screen which may be made of wire mesh, and the screen 21 is adapted to be held in the frame formed by the parts of the present invention.
ates atet ice For coacting with each of the support members 10, body members 22 are provided, Figure 4. Each body member 22 may include a wall member 23 which has an arm 24 extending outwardly therefrom, and an angularly arranged finger 25 may be arranged on the other end of the arm 24, a finger 25 being slidably seated in the groove 20. The wall member 23 is provided with an enlarged shoulder 26 which has a lip 27 extending outwardly therefrom, and the lip 27 projects into the space between the walls 12 and 17, the lip 27 serving to wedge a portion of the wire screen 21 between the lip 27 and the wall 19.
There is further provided a means for securing together the adjacent ends of thesupport members 10, and this means comprises L-shaped bars or brackets 28, Figure 2. End portions of the bracket 28 are seated in the space between the walls 13 and 17, and the adjacent portions of the support members may be secured to the bracket 28 by peened portions 29, Figure 1. Thus, the bracket 28 will serve to secure together the adjacent ends of the support members so that the rectangular frame shown in Figure 1 can be formed.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a means for fastening a screen such as the screen 21 in a frame. The frame may be rectangular and may be made of any suitable material such as aluminum, and the frame may consist of the plurality of support members 10 which coact with the body members 22. The adjacent ends of the support members are interconnected together by means of the L-shaped brackets 28, and portions of the support members may be secured or peened to the bracket 28 as indicated by the numeral 29. The screen 21 which may be wire mesh, has portions thereof extending into the space between the walls 12 and 17, and the lip 27 serves 'to bind or wedge the screen between the body member and support members so that the screen will not accidentally work loose. The finger 25 is slidably seated in the groove 26. Thus, there is provided a slidable connection between the body members 22 and support members 10 so that in the event the wire 21 becomes damaged or worn, then the body members 22 can be readily removed by sliding them off of the support members 10 so that the screen 21 can be removed or replaced.
With the present invention, the Wire can be quickly and easily applied or removed and no elaborate or complicated tools are required. Furthermore, the members can be readily pryed apart when new wire is to be inserted. The brackets 28 are arranged at the corners of the frame. With the present invention it is not necessary to use staples, tacks, or the like since the cooperating body member and support member serves to lock the screen therebetween. Furthermore, it is not necessary to trim the wire to the exact size when being used in the present invention and the provision of the L-shaped brackets 23 permit the members to be mitered at one time. The various wall members or walls, and the body members and support members will flex sufficiently to compensate for any variation to gauge tolerances and the tension is always towards the other edges of the frame. The frame will be strong, and the center punches will provide the securing portions 29. When the frame is being rewired, it is only necessary to pry the members apart with a screwdriver, chisel or the like, then lay a new wire over the support members 10, and press the body members in place to clamp the wire therebetween.
I claim:
