3 Claims. (Cl. 2-69) This invention relates to an article which is adapted for several uses such as a blanket, a handbag, a mat, and a weather-cape.
An object of the invention is to provide for an article which may be used by tourists, vacationists, sport-loving people, and picinc parties, for a variety of purposes.
The invention comprises an oblong piece of fabric which may comprise one or several layers of a soft and pliable material with one layer preferably, though not necessarily, consisting of a waterproof material. The blanket or mat is manufactured of a single blank in such way that one of its ends may be folded upon itself and sewed, cemented, or otherwise fastened at its edges to the mat to form on top of said blanket a receptacle, open on one side only and large enough to hold a pillow or, as described hereinafter, the folded blanket itself.
A further object of the invention is to provide for an article for all kinds of outdoor activities which is easy to manipulate to be spread as a comfortable mat or to be folded and kept and carried as a handbag or to be used as a protecting weathercape in case of emergency.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an article for a plurality of purposes which is simple in construction, attractive in shape and appearance, and easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention herein described and illustrated by the attached drawings will be obvious from the disclosure herein given.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a partially assembled pack of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the opened pack spread as a mat.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section through the top of the mat along line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a section along the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the folded article showing the use as a handbag.
Fig. 7 is a similar view but from the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 6, and showing the top of the pack opened or untied.
Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the article illustrating the folding.
Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic perspective view illustrating the cross-folding.
Fig. 10 is a diagrammatic perspective view illustrating the crosswise folded article previous to the final operation of reversing the pillowcase-like uppermost receptacle portion of the device to receive and retain the folded mat.
Fig. 11 is a view showing the article as applied to the wearer.
In the drawings is shown the mat or blanket 20 having a hem 20a secured by a line of stitching 20, and shown in various stages of folding as in Figs. 1, 6, 7, 9, and 10, and in a spread form as in Figs. 2 and 8.
The cross-sections, Figs. 3 and 4, illustrate how the 2,783,473 I Patented Mar. .5, 1951 pillowcase-like top portion 21 is formed and sewed as by a line of stitches 21a or cemented with its open end 22 on one longitudinal side of the mat. On the same open side, ribbons or tapes 23 are provided for tying the prop? erly folded mat together. A shoulder-strap 24 is fastened to the pillowcase-like receptacle in such manner that the folded pack can be carried easily. The mat is first folded longitudinally along the lines 25 and 26 in such sequence, as'illustrated by the arrows B and C, that the portion with the open side 22 of the pillowcase-like'top is to the outside. The prefolded mat is then folded crosswise along the lines'27 and 28 in suchmanner that the pile lowcase-like portion 21 extends beyond the folded :pack, as illustrated in Fig. 9. If finally the folded pack is folded at lines D in Fig. 9 to form a final pack as illustrated in Fig. 10, and if then the corner marked A" in Figs. 1, 9 and 10, is grasped with one hand on the inside of the illowcase-like receptacle 21 it is easy to overturn or reverse the casing or receptacle and to pull the casing or receptacle 21 with its inside out over the prefolded portion to form a solid uniform pack, similar to the pro cedure to pull a pillowcase over a pillow. Ribbons or tapes 23 are fastened to the open end of the receptacle 22 to tie the pack together; which shoulder straps 24 are provided for easier and more convenient carrying.
Separable slide fastener strips 30 and 31, or other fastening means such as buttons and buttonholes or books and eyes, etc., are fastened to opposite ends of the same longitudinal edge of the mat to adapt the mat for use as a weathercape, if desired, whereby the mat may be wrapped around the shoulders so that the two cooperating fastener halves or other mentioned fasteners join in front of the wearer to be closed firmly, thereby holding the weathercape together, as in Fig. 11. A further pocket 32 may be provided for on the outside of the folded pack which, by its manner of folding automatically, forms a bag which is of practical use for the various purposes mentioned. The auxiliary pocket 32 may be used for carrying cosmetic compact, keys, a purse, etc., while the main receptacle may house a wet bathing suit in addition to housing the folded mat or blanket.
It is obvious that minor modifications of the described and illustrated example of the invention may be made without departing from the basic idea of the invention. Therefore, this description and illustration is not limited to the exact form,,construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein set forth, but comprises and may include all other variations within the scope of the ap pended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A combined mat, carrying bag, and garment comprising an oblong blank of soft, pliable material, one end of the blank being folded upon itself along a line parallel to a shorter side of the blank, the edge of the folded over portion which is parallel to the fold line and one of the adjacent edges being secured to the remainder of the blank to constitute a rectangular pillow-casing with an open side along a shorter dimension of said pil low-casing, the remainder of the blank constituting a mat, the area of which is a multiple of the area of said pillow-casing, the combined mat and pillow-casing being divided into rectangles of smaller area by spaced lines of fold extending parallel to the side edges and ends of the mat, respectively, so that the combined mat and the pillow-casing may be folded inwardly from its side edges along the lines of fold parallel to the side edges thereof to form three superimposed longitudinal panels'with the panel having the open side of the pillow-casing being outermost, said outermost one-third part of the pillowcasing then constituting a receptacle with the mat folded along the lines of fold parallel to its ends to bring the folded mat within the dimensions of said receptacle, and
in faefib face relationwith one face oi said receptacle, said -1 ece4 tacle beinglhen mevensibie to dispose the .iolded mat and the folded part of the pillow-casing wholly within said receptacle.
