W H w w F. m m n M a CUSTOMER'S ADDRESS INVENTOR. JOSEPH ZALKIND ATTORNEY United States Patent 2,777,631 STATEMENT SHEET AND ENVELOPE Joseph Zalkind, New York, N. Y. Application October 14, 1953, Serial No. 386,058 2 Claims. (Cl. 229-73) This invention relates to business envelopes and more particularly to an envelope combined with a record sheet.
It is an object of my invention to provide a combined envelope and record sheet in such a manner that the device may be inserted in a business machine for typing data relating to transactions on the record sheet.
It is another object of my invention to provide an article of the kind described which will be cheap to manufacture and convenient to use.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a device of the kind described which may be made of paper stock relatively thinner than that ordinarily used for record sheets which must be inserted in business machines.
In general, my invention consists of a paper panel, one end of which is folded to form an envelope and the other end of which is marginally folded upon itself, the two marginal portions then being glued together so as to form a thickened and substantially stiff edge, thus such an edge may be introduced between the roller or guides of a business machine without crumpling. The stiffened edge and, in fact, the entire article is further stiffened by extending the glue flaps from the envelope end of the device as far as, and in fact between the adhering marginal portions just described. Thus, a substantially stronger and stifier article is effected than would ordinarily result from conventional methods of manufacture.
In carrying out my invention, I combine a record sheet with a return envelope in such a manner that one end of the record sheet is glued marginally to another thickness of the paper stock forming the device and the thickened and stifiened edge resulting will then withstand the stresses incident to insertion of the record sheet in a business machine. Since the initial stresses on such sheet are compressive at the lower edge thereof, once said edge has been successfully inserted in the machine it will be apparent that the remaining stresses on the record sheet are tensile in nature and accordingly no extra stiffening of the major portion of the sheet is neces sary. Thus, by following my teaching, it is possible to construct a device for the purpose intended, without resorting to the use of inherently stifi paper, whereby I efiect a considerable saving in cost of manufacture and when it is considered that business transaction devices of this kind are used in quantities of many millions, my invention is capable of yielding a very considerable saving to large consumers thereof.
My invention will now be described in detail in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing the outside surface of the envelope.
Fig. 2 is a section through 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is 'a view of the reverse side of the envelope showing the record sheet relative thereto, the record sheet in this instance being in the form of a monthly statement.
Fig. 4 is a perspective of the device showing the opposite side as compared with Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a section through the device shown in folded condition presumably ready to be placed in an outer envelope of the window type.
With reference to the drawing, my invention comprises "ice a paper panel 1GP, one end 12 of which has been folded up to form an envelope pocket in conjunction with foldedin glue flaps 14 and 16. The glue flaps are extended to the other end of the panel substantially to a fold line 18 and a marginal portion of the panel on the other side of the fold line is cemented so as to form a double thickness edge substantially throughout its length and having substantially a triple thickness at its edge as shown in Fig. 2. Thus the marginal portions 20 and 22 form a relatively stiif edge which may be inserted in a business machine without crumpling. The remainder of the panel extends to form a statement sheet 24, upon which data may be typed or printed when the device is inverted and inserted in such a machine, von the outer face of which a perforate line 26 extends across the entire panel, including the turned-in glue flaps, so that the statement sheet may be readily separated from the envelope portion. A dry gum adhesive area 28 is also provided which may be moistened so that the envelope flap portion 30 may be folded over and caused to adhere to the portion 12.
By referring to Fig. 5, it will be seen how the device is folded for insertion in a conventional window envelope with the customers address showing through. The customer may then sever or separate the statement sheet from the envelope, by tearing along the perforate line 26, keeping the statement sheet for his records and using the envelope for mailing payment to the company. As seen in Fig. l, the address of the company may be printed on the front face of the envelope.
Thus my device solves a problem heretofore requiring the use of heavy and relatively expensive paper stock. I am aware that my invention may, in principle, be utilized in various ways, and accordingly I do not seek to be limited to the specific embodiment illustrated herein except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An article of the class described comprising a main panel, one end of said panel being folded to form an envelope therewith and another end of said panel being folded to form a record sheet, wherein the margins adjacent the fold line between said panel and record sheet are secured together to eifect a double thickness relatively stiff edge for insertion in a business machine, wherein the envelope formed at the end of said panel comprises glue flaps at the sides therefrom extending the length of said panel at the side edges thereof and terminating between said secured margins at the ends thereof.
2. An article of the class described, comprising a main panel having one end folded contiguous thereto to form an envelope and side edges folded inwardly to form glue flaps for said envelope, said flaps extending the length of said panel and glued thereto and terminating substantially at a fold line therein, including a severable record sheet extending from said fold line and formed of the material of said panel and extending towards said envelope end, wherein said extended glue flaps serve to stiffen the edges of said article for insertion in a business machine, a marginal portion of said panel and said record sheet extending from said fold line and being glued together to form a double-ply margin, said margin being triple-ply at the extremities thereof by virtue of juncture with said glue flaps of said envelope.
