Application October 19, 1953, Serial No. 386,727
1 Claim. (Cl. 248-127) The present invention is concerned with a rest for shoulder weapons and is more particularly concerned with a rest which can be folded into a relatively small and compact container for weapon accessories.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a rest for shoulder type weapons which is economical to produce and which will provide a steady support with the Weapon held in an elevated position with all parts (here of being readily accessible for cleaning, repairs and the like.
A further and important object of the invention is to provide a rest for weapons which has a substantial base providing a steady support, storage space for accesssories, and is easily and quickly foldable into a completely closed and relatively small container that can be readily carried or stored as desired.
Further objects of the invention will be in part pointed out and in part obvious from the following description of the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Fig. l is a perspective view of the present gun rest in its open position.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of the gun rest also in its open position.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of the gun rest with the supporting uprights in their folded position.
Fig. 4 is a further longitudinal cross sectional view of the gun rest in its closed position.
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view taken on line 77 of Fig. 2; and,
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the gun supporting uprights.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters, numeral 1 refers to the fiat rectangular bottom of an opened topped container provided by straight rectangular end walls 2 and 3 and straight rectangular side walls 4 and 5 which are joined together and extend substantially perpendicular from said bottom.
Side wall 4 has a shoulder 6 provided upon its interior face and extending from end wall 3 to the slot 7 extending laterally of the interior face of bottom 1.
A gun supporting upright 8 which is substantially flat and straight has a V-shaped top portion 9. .Said upright 8 further has an elongated opening 10 provided laterally therethrough and in which is slidably positioned a pin 11 which also extends into the upper portion of side walls 4 and 5. Said upright extends completely across the space between said walls 4 and 5 and its bottom end is shaped for at times being inserted into slot 7.
A second similar opened topped container is provided by a substantially flat rectangular bottom 15 from which extends end walls 16 and 17 and side walls 18 and 19 cross sectional view taken on line 6-6 United States Patent 0 Patented Dec. 18, 1856 all of which are substantially perpendicular to said bottom and are connected together. Side wall 18 has an'interior shoulder 20 which extends from end wall 17 to slot 21 formedlaterally of said bottom 15.
A second substantially flat and straight upright 22 is pivotally mounted by means of an elongated slot 24 provided laterally through a lower portion thereof and through which extends a pin 25 mounted at each end in the upper portion of side walls 18 and 19. Said upright has a V-shaped top 23 for supporting a portion of the gun, while the lower end thereof is insertable at times within slot 21 and said support extends completely across the space between side Walls 18 and'19.
A piano hinge 26 is mortised into the top of end walls 3 and 17 hingedly connecting the tops of these walls as well as their containers together.
in use hinge 26 positions the open topped containers side by side as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive with bottoms 1 and 15 extending contiguously providing a broad flat base for the gun rest. Supports 8 and 22 are each pivoted and slid first upwardly upon their respective pins 11 and 25 and then downwardly until their lower end is inserted in slots 7 and 21 respectively. The uprights are then substantially in a vertical position with one face thereof bearing against shoulders 6 and 20 respectively providing a substantial support therefor. A shoulder gun, for example, a rifle, shot gun, sub-machine gun or the like can then be positioned upon the V-shaped tops 9 and 23 whereby the weapon can be displayed, repaired, cleaned, checked or otherwise worked on with the hands of the operator being free. Also the support can be used for bench rest shooting or sighting-in of the weapon among other operations.
When it is no longer desired to support a weapon upon said uprights, they are slid upwardly from their holding slots and pivoted upon their respective pins until they lay substantially horizontal upon the'interior shoulders, such as 6 and 20, as best shown in Figs, 3, 4 and 6 of the drawing. Said shoulders maintain the uprights spaced from the bottoms 1 and 15 providing accessory storage spaces 30 for holding small tools, containers of solvents, oils, cleaning rods and the like, for use upon the weapons.
At that time either one of the containers is pivoted upon hinge 26 until the open top thereof is positioned upon the open top of the other container whereby a closed box is provided as shown in Fig.4 which is'com-. pact and can be conveniently carried or stored until rcquired for further use.
The elements of both containers are substantially identical so that the side and end walls of one container coinsides with the similar elements of the other container when positioned together.
The present gun rest is capable of considerable modification and such changes thereto as come within the scope of the appended claim is deemed to be a part of the invention.
What I claim is: V
A rest for shoulder weapons comprising a pair of open top containers, means hingedly connecting the-tops of corresponding end walls of said containers, a pair of uprights each having an elongated opening providedtherethrough, a pair of pins each mounted in an upper portion of the side walls of one of said containers and extending through the elongated opening in one of said uprights whereby said upright can he slid longitudinally and pivoted on its respective pin, each container having a lateral slot in the bottom thereof below said pin for receiving an end of its respective upright, a pair of shoulders provided along the side walls of each container References Cited! intheifile ofxthis gpatent 2STATES PATENTS *Fahnestock June -30, 1903 10 :fifiE-w" '7u-u J":'v:k u,n iq!
