2 Claims. (Cl. 182--14) This invention relates to floor drains and particularly to those of the type which include back-water trapping means and has for its principal object to `providel a drain of this character wherein the back-water trapping means is fully submerged in a relatively large and deep water seal, thereby assuringfagainst the escape of sewer ases.
g Other objects of the invention are to provide a floor drain with primary and secondary back-water control means; to provide for removal of the primary backwater control means as a unit to facilitate cleaning of the water bowl of the drain; to provide a ground joint between the removable unit and bowl portion of the drain; to provide a trap of large water capacity and having a limited open evaporating surface to provide a structure which maintains a water seal over both back-water control means; and to provide a floor drain of this character that is of simple and reliable construction.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention as hereinafter pointed out I have provided irnproved structure the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:

Referring more in detail to the drawings:
l designates a floor drain constructed in accordance with the present invention and which includes a casing 2, preferably of unitary construction and which may be formed of cast metal. Casing 2 consists of a drain section 3, a water bowl or trap section 4 containing the primary back-water control means 5, and a clean-out section 6 containing a secondary back-water control means 7. T he drain section 3 includes an annular wall 8 having an outwardly extending rim 9 around the circumference thereof and which cooperates with an inwardly extending inset flange 10 to` accommodate an internal annular shoulder or ledge 11. The shoulder ll seats a peripheral portion 12 of "a strainer plate 13 having drainage apertures 14. Extending inwardly `from the wall tl, at a point spaced below the inwardly extending flange 10, is a horizontal partition 16 that cooperates with the primary back-water control means 5 in forming the bottom of a drain compartment `17 that collects the water which drains through the apertures `14. The partition 16 has a thickened portion 18 encircling a central opening 19 in which the primary back-water control means 5 is suspended as later described.
The bowl section 4 depends integrally from the ledge or partition 16 and is of substantially elongated cross sec tion as shown in Fig. 2. The bowl section includes substantially parallel side walls 20 and 21 connected at nite States Patent O ICC one end by a substantially semi-cylindrical wall 22. The wall 22 is substantially concentric with the opening 19 in the partition 16. The lower portions of the side walls 20-21 and end wall 22 are interconnected on rounding curves, to form a smoothly rounding concave bottom 23 for the bowl section so as to facilitate cleaning thereof upon removal of the back-water control unit as later described. The opposite end wall 24 of the bowl section slopes downwardly and forwardly to cooperate with the bottom and side` walls to form a water compartment or chamber 25. Below the wall portion 24, the side walls and bottom terminate in a tubular duct 26 that curves upwardly to connect with the clean-out section 6 in an upwardly and outwardly aring portion 27 that forms the bottom of the clean-out section. The clean,- out section is `formed by an annular wall 28 that joins with the flaring portion 27 and extends upwardly parallel with the wall S and terminatesin an inwardly extending flange 29 encircling an opening 30. The ange 29 carries internal annular threads 31 that are engaged with the external threads 32 of a closure plate or plug 33 that is adapted to be turned into and out of the opening 30 by a suitable wrench (not shown). Joined with the wall 28 and extending laterally therefrom is a tubular neck 34 which is adapted to be connected with a sewer or other disposal duct for the water that flows through the drain.
The cylindrical portions S and 28 of the casing are preferably spaced apart as indicated at 3S and are connected by a tie 36. Thus, all the wall portions of the floor drain are on the exterior and readily inspected as to any imperfections in the construction that might cause leakage of water and/ or sewer gases. The bowl and an outlet portion of the floor drain are of sutcient depth to accommodate at least a standard depth of water seal, in accordance with the various plumbing codes.
The primary back-water control unit 5 includes a circular head plate 37 that cooperates with a depending annular rib 3S in closing the drain compartment 17 with respect to the bowl compartment 25 of the drain as best shown in Fig. 3. Formed concentrically with the plate 37 is an opening 39 to a depending duct 4d that extends into the water bowl chamber 25 of the drain as shown in Fig. l and 3. The upper portion 41 of the depending duct is substantially cylindrical and connects the lower portion 42 by an offset 43 of substantially elliptical cross section so as to permit removal of the unit through the opening 19 and does not reduce the flow capacity at the point of the offset. The lower portion 42 terminates in a downwardly and forwardly extendingelbow portion 44 to provide a downwardly and forwardly sloping end face 4S encircling an opening 46 that connects with the bowl compartment 25. The bottom of the rib 37 and the upper face of the partition i6 are provided with inwardly extending annular shoulders 47 and 48 to accommodate therein sealing rings 49 and 5t) having ground faces 5l to form a liquid tight seal therebetween. The primary back-water control unit 5 is secured in position by a fastening device such as cap` screws 52 having Shanks S3 extending through openings 54 in the projecting peripherial portion 55 of the plate 37 and into registering internally threaded sockets 56 that are provided in `the partition 16.
The opening 46 is normally closed by a disk-shaped check valve 57 that is carried 'oy a collar 58 that is pressed into the opening to provide a water-tight seal. The valve 57 is pivotally connected through a lever 59 that is pivotally connected with a lug 6i) projecting from the upper diametrical side of -the collar 58. The lever extends forwardly from the pivot connection 62 with the valve disk to form a stop 61 which cooperates with the opposite end of the lever in holding the check valve in substantially parallel relation therewith and thereby assure full opening of the outlet when the check valve swings open, and to permit seating thereof on the seating/face 63 of the collar.
The secondary back-How control unit 7 also includes a collar 64 that is pressed into the opening 65 and which has a lug or ear 66 extending upwardly therefrom and into the clean-out section'to pivotally connect with an arm 67 similar to the arm of the other check valve. The
arm extends forwardly and pivotally connected therewith is a disk shaped valve 68 similar to the valve 57, previous- A ly described.
If desired, the opening 39 may be internally threaded as indicated at 69. l v
` The curved `wall portion 70 that connects the wall 2li with the wall portion 27 forms a water seall between the inlet and outlet of the drain independently of the seal that is formed by submergence of the back-water control valves.
The secondary back-water control means 7 is readily inserted through the clean-out opening 30 and the collar 64 thereof is pressed iirmly within the opening 65, as shown in Fig. 3. The collar being arranged so that the valve opens'in the direction of the ilow from the bowl compartment 25 to the sewer connection 34. The collar 58 of the primary back-water control unit 5 is pressed into the opening 46 with Vthe hinged connection of the arm 59 uppermost and whereby the weight of the arm 59 and check valve 57 will normally retain the check valve 57 on the inclined seat 63. The secondary check valve 68 is also retained in closed position, by gravity. The primary back-water control unit is inserted through the drain compartment 1 7 with the depending portion thereof passing through the opening 19 in the partition 16 after which the rib 33 is centered with respect to the opening 19 in the partition and to register the ground faces S1 of the sealing rings i9 and'St. The Vcap screws 52 are then inserted and tightened to draw the faces 51 of the sealing rings 49 and 5) into contact. The threaded plate 33 is then inserted within the opening 3i). The strainer plate 13 is inserted to close the upper portion of the section 3 of the drain.
The drain is readiiy installed in the same manner as any conventional drain with the strainer plate and upper face of the clean-out plug in plane with the lloor yto be drained, and the outlet is connected with a sewer. When water ows through the opening 14 of the strainer plate 13 it flows from the drain compartment 17 through the opening 39 of the control unit and into the duct 40 thereof for discharge upon lifting of the check valve 57 from its seat 63. As the'water ows into the drain, the level thereof rises within the bowl and -forms a Water seal about the check valve, and fills the trap formed by thewal169. A water level is thus Vmaintained at the height of the sewer connection. With the trap lled and both check valves submerged there is no possibility of gases escaping through the openings 14 of the drain plate 13.y When the water ceases to ow, lthe valve seats by gravity and remains covered with water. The high level of the liquid, assures ample water in the respective compartments of the drain and the only portion of the water. that is subjected to evaporation is that contained above the secondary valve. The water contained between the primary and secondary valves is not subject to evaporation because the valves are closed therefore the bowl section of the drain will maintain an ample amount of water over a long period of time.
In case it becomes necessary to clean out the bowl section, the drain plate 13 is removed, after which the cap screws 52 are removed, and the entire primary backow unit is lifted from the drain. When the primary back-ow control unit is removed the entire bowl section of the drain is easily cleaned of any solids collecting in the bottom thereof. After removal, the valve vof the primary unit is readily inspected for repair and replacement of parts. The valve member 68 of the secondary control valve 7 is readily removed after removal of the plate 33, and the pivot pin therefor for replacement of this part and cleaning of the valve seat 64.
The position of the primary valve, assures full closure and at the same time the angle is ample to assure a cleanly working valve and seat.
While I have described a primary and secondary backwater control means on the respective sides of the trap 701, the secondary back-water control could be omitted and a satis-factory drain results because of the trap seal and the control unit v5. It the secondary unit is omitted, the clean-out section and `the threaded opening thereto may be formed of relatively smaller size. Also, the cleanout opening 30 and plug 33 lmay be omitted in which case the neck portion 34 of the unit may be cleaned out through the opening 19 after removal of the back-water control means 5.
From `the foregoing it is obvious that l have provided a iloor drain which includes lback-water contr-ol means submerged =within a water-seal of large capacity. It is also obvious that the primary land `secondary control units on the respective sides of lthe gas trap assures against leakage of sewer gases and back-how of water from the sewer to which the drain is connected.
Wha-t I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l.A `floor drain `including a casing forming a tlow passageway therethrough from a drain inlet in said casing ,Ito a drain outlet on a side of the casing remote yfrom the drain inlet, said casing having a part depending transversely of said passageway `to a poin-t below the outlet for forming a seal with a body of water trapped in the passageway, a partition extending horizontally within the casing at the drain inlet side of said depending part of the casing to form an upper drain compartment and a lower valve compartment within said passageway, said partition having an `opening therethrough, a bacleow control unit having an annular plate portion closing said opening and having a depending duct portion extending downwardly-through said opening and terminating in an outlet below `the level of the outlet of said casing, means forming ya valve seat in 'the passageway at .the outlet side of said depending part of the casing and at a level below said `ou-tlet of `the casing, means `forming -a valve seat on the loutlet of said duct, and valving members on the outlet side of said seat forming means and arranged to open in fthe direction of ow from the drain inlet to the drain outlet land to seat -in case of backiiow from the outlet of `the casing in the direction of said drain inlet.

A oor dra-in including, a casing Vforming a ow passageway therethrough from a drain inlet in said casing to `a drain outlet on a yside of the casing remote from the drain inlet, said casing having a part depending transversely of said passageway vto a point below the outlet for forming a seal with a body of water trapped in the passageway, ya valve seat member in the passageway at the outlet `side of :said depending part of the casing and at a level Vbelow said outlet of the casing, ya partition extending horizontally Vwithin `the casing on the dra-in inlet side of said depending part` of the lcasing to form an upper drain compartment and a lower valve compartment with-in said passageway, said partition having an opening therethrough, a backiiow control unit having anV annular plate portion closing said opening `and having a depending duct portion extending downwardly through said opening and terminating below said valve seat in a laterally and downwardly sloping outlet below lthe level of the outlet of said casing, `a valve seat member on the outlet of 4said duct, land valving members on the outlet side of said'seat members adapted to open in lthe direction of iiow from the drain 'inlet to the -dra-in youtlet and to seat in case of bacleow -from ithe outlet of the casing in the direction ofY said drain inlet.
