CONTAINER TOP WITH ROOM FOR STRAW Filed June 2, 1955 INVENTOR A N THONY R. A TTLER United States Patent CONTAINER TOP WITH ROGM FQR fiTRAW Anthony R. Attler, Yonkers, N. Y.
Application June 2, 1955, Serial No. 512,625
1 Claim. (1. 215-69) This invention relates to container tops or closures.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved container closure or top which provides room for the upward extension therewithin of the upper end of a straw or the like.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a container top with room for straw of the above type which is adapted to be used with various types of containers, for examples soda bottles, milk bottles and cans.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a container top with room for straw bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in use.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a modified form of the present invention; and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view; and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a still further modified form of the present invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, and more particularly to Fig. 1, represents the neck of a soda bottle or the like having the usual upper lip 11 and lower lip 12 defining therebetween the annular groove 13, substantially as illustrated.
In the practice of my invention, an improved closure with room for straw is provided and includes a metal cap having an inverted frusto-conical portion 14 and a top wall 15, the lower end of the frusto-conical portion 14 being integrally formed with the rim 16 which extends outwardly therefrom and is integrally formed with depending skirt 17 which extends into the groove 13 along the inwardly bent portion 18 whereby to firmly secure the cap to the bottle, as will be obvious.
A cork lining is provided and includes the frusto-conical portion 19 and the top wall 20 as well as the rim 21 which extends intermediate the rim 16 in the upper end of the neck 10. A straw 22 is provided in the bottle with the upper end thereof extending upwardly into the space provided Within the frusto- conical portions 14 and 19.
While the shape of the extended portion of the cap has been shown as frusto-conical, it may be of any suitable shape, for example round, square, etc. The removing of the cap may be accomplished with a conventional bottle opener and the sealing thereof may be efiected in the usual manner, crimping the skirt 17 and extension 18 into the annular groove 13.
The straw 22 may be formed of paper, plastic, or any other suitable material.
Referring now particularly to Fig. 2, there is shown a modified form of the present invention applicable to the neck 10a of a milk bottle or the like integrally formed around its upper end with the annular ride 23. in the practice of my invention, a paper cap is provided and includes a frusto-conical portion 24 integrally formed with a top wall 25, the lower end of the frusto-conical portion 24 being integrally formed with the laterally extending rim or flange 26 which is received within the ridge 23 in a well known manner. The frustoconical portion 24 provides space for the straw 22a in a manner similar to the previous form. The closure is provided with flaps, not shown, for opening purposes, and in the same manner as conventional milk bottle caps.
Referring now particularly to Fig. 4, there is shown a still further modified form of the present invention, applicable for closing a can 1% having a rolled, open upper end 27. In the practice of my invention, a metal closure is provided and includes a frusto-conical portion 28 having a circular top wall 29, the lower open end of the frusto-conical portion 28 being integrally formed with the outwardly extending ring or rim 30 which terminates in the rolled portion 31 which secures the closure to the rolled edge 27 of the can. conical portion 23 provides space for the straw 22b and in a manner similar to the previous forms.
It should now be apparent, that there has been provided container tops having room for straws and which eliminate the necessity of having to probe downwardly into the container to retain the upper end of the straw and whereupon the contents may be consumed immedi ately after removing the top.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A container top with room for straw comprising a substantially frusto-conical hollow portion having a top wall integral therewith at the smaller upper end, an outwardly extending, substantially circular flange integrally formed at the lower end of said frusto-conical portion and adapted to close the upper end of the container, said frusto-conical portion providing room therewithin for the upper end of the straw contained within the container and extending upwardly thereabove from the open upper end, said flange around its periphery being integrally formed with a depending skirt having inwardly extending lower portion, said skirt and inwardly extending lower portion being crimped onto the open upper end of the bottle having a corresponding annular groove, and a cork lining intermediate the top and the upper open end of the bottle, said cork lining having a frustoconical portion received within said top frusto-eonical portion, a top wall disposed below said container top wall, and a circular flange extending outwardly intermediate the top flange and the upper end of the bottle and terminating within said depending skirt.
