FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,620, dated. March 2%, 1883.
Application filed February 19, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, PHILIP LYoN and Jo- SEPH H. BOSSARD, citizens of the United States of America, residing at East Stroudsburg, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein tothe accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to improvements in fruit cans or jars whose covers are secured by lever-power, and is designed to protect the can-cover from breakage or other injury and to make the fastening secure.
The accompanying drawings, in connection with the following description, fully set forth the nature of our invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a fruit can orjar, showing a side view of our improvement. Fig.2 is an end elevation of the cover-fastener. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the top of the jar-cover and the fastener, and Fig. 4. is a top view of the movable draw-bar used in our invention.
The letters of reference used indicate corre sponding parts in all the views.
The letter A represents an ordinary fruit can or jar having an annular projection, a, just below its rim.
The dotted line A A marks the top or rim of the jar.
B is the can-cover.
G is a rubber ring commonly used, and lies upon the projection a.
D is a clamp or bail whose ends 1 I are bent inwardly to pass under the projection a. This clamp has a slot, 0?, in each vertical end, and a slot, (1, in its top; (shown in Figs. 2and 3;) also ears m, having pivot-holes 0 on its horizontal part.
An eccentric, E, working in the slot 01 and having a lever-arm, E, is pivoted at o to the bail D. The plate or bar G, Fig. 4, havingits ends 9 g narrowed to loosely fit the slots (Z d in the bail, is operated by the eccentric E. A ratchet-spring, F, having one endriveted to the bar G, extends up through the slot (2, and with its other end engages the notches e in the cam E.
We are awarethatslotted bails and eccentrical disks and levers have been used to secure the covers on fruit-jars; but as they have heretofore been constructed the lever-arm is liable, either by pressure from the contents of cover beneath the clamp D.
the-can or by accident in handling or moving, to be raised and allow the cover to be loosened. Our invention overcomes this difliculty by adapting the spring-pawl F to engage the eccentric in one of the notches c, which prevents the arm E from being raised by accident, but readily permits it to be raised when the catch F is lifted out of the notch e. Again, as fruit-jars are made of various materials, the eccentric E is liable to break glass or earthen covers, and to bend, break, or-wear covers of tin or other material. The bar G prevents this result by taking the pressure from the center of the cover and delivering it at the edges, where only it becomes effective. The pieceG may be widened, if desired, to theiull size of the can-cover.
Our improvement is applied and operated as follows: The fruit being in the jar, the rubber ring 0 is placed on the projection a and the cover B put on, its lower edge resting upon the ring 0. The clamp D is then adjusted to the cover, the lever-arm E being raised and the ratchet Frestingagainst the said arm, asin Fig. 2. The bar G lies loosely upon the can- The arm E is then forced down toward a horizontal position until the pressure of the eccentric E upon the bar G is sufficient to tighten the cover and until the catch F drops into a notch, c, on the eccentric.
The different parts of our invention are made of any preferred materials.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a can orjar, A, having an annular projection, on, and cover B, of a bail or clamp, D, provided with slots d d and d and ears m, an eccentric, E, having notches e, and arm E, pivoted at o to the cars we, and the bar Gr, adapted to wort: in the slots d d, and having a spring-catch, F, to engage the notches e in the eccentric E, all arranged and constructed substantially as herein described.
