1 Claim. (Cl. 2-249) This invention relates to a pocket protector and more particularly to an improvement on Patent No. 2,415,132 to Elva O. Greer on -a Combination Pocket Protector and Pen and Pencil Holder, patented February 4, 1947.

The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of a device for insertion in a shirt pocket or other garment, in which a fountain pen or pencil is to be carried so as to protect the pocket `against wear and against becoming torn or soiled while holding the pen or pencil in a secure manner yet providing means for assuring that the pen or pencil can be readily detached.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a pocket protector which employs filament tape having a relatively smooth surface for enabling a pen or pencil to be more easily detached therefrom. A relatively rough lsurface tape is employed on -the interior of the pocket protector for frictional engagement with a shirt so as to permit the protector to frictionally vadhere to the pocket when the last pen or pencil carried by the protector has been removed therefrom.

vStill further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a pocket protector and holder which is strong and durable, simple in construction, light in weight, and which can be manufactured from various materials such as cellulose acetate or the like so as to be either transparent or opaque, and colored to suit the individual taste.

These, together with the Vvarious ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are obtained by this combination pocket protector and holder, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:

Figure l is a vertical sectional view illustrating the invention as installed in a pocket;

Figure 2 is an elevational View of the pocket protector and holder with parts thereof being broken away to show the construction of the pocket holder with greater clarity; and

Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view as taken along the plane of line 3 3 in Figure 2.

With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the Various views, reference numeral generally designates a pocket which is sewn on a garment such as a shirt 12 or the like. The pocket protector comprising the present invention as generally designated by reference numeral 14 is adapted to be installed in the pocket 10 so as to protect and guard the pocket against soiling when pens or pencils are secured therein.

The pocket protector 12 includes a relatively large panel 16 which may have its lower edges as at 18 contoured to conform with the general configuration of the pocket 10. The panel 16 is preferably formed from cellulose acetate or other suitable and preferably synthetic plastic material. The panel 16 is of substantially the same dimensions as the pocket 10 so as to tit snugly therein.

A relatively small panel 20 of similar material to that of which the panel 16 is formed is provided and cooperates with the large panel to form a trough adapted to straddle the upper edge of the pocket 10 with the small panel 20 forming a flap for the pocket 10. The upper edge 22 of the panel 20 -is positioned immediately adjacent but spaced from the upper edge 24 of the panel 16. Filament tape 26 formed of rayon or like material so as to have an exceptionally smooth outer surface with the Istrands 28 of the filament tape 26 extending perpendicular to the upper edges 22 and 24 of the panels 20 and 16, respectively. This increases the effective strength of the pocket protector. The tape 26 may completely cover the panel 20 and extends downwardly along the panel 16 to a point as at 30 so as to assure that the clips of the pen and pencils for which this device is adapted to be utilized will always engage the ysurface of the tape when in position.

A strip of relatively rough surface tape such as adhesive tape and indicated at 32 is secured to the inner surface of the panel 16 with the top edge 34 of the tape 32 positioned below the top edge 24. The positioning of the top edges 34 with respect to the top edges 22 and 24 which are spaced from each forms a hollow space 36 for reception of the upper edge of the shirt pocket which will assure that the shirt pocket will remain relatively free from soiling with the upper edges 22 and 24 cooperating to stiifen the upper edge of the shirt pocket. The rough surface of the tape 32 will make the pocket protector frictionally adhere to the inner surface of the pocket thereby preventing accidental loss of the pocket protector due to the bending of the person wearing the pocket protector or for various other reasons and extending downwardly to a point 38.

IFrom the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed as new is `as follows:

A combination pocket protector and holder comprising a relatively large panel of substantially rigid material and of substantially the same size and shape as a pocket which said panel is adapted to be inserted into, `a comparatively small panel, filament tape having a relatively smooth outer surface securing said small panel to said large panel with said small panel cooperating with said large panel to form a trough adapted to straddle the upper edge of a pocket with said small panel forming la flap with said tape overlying said llap, said small panel having its top edge positioned immediately adjacent but spaced from the top edge of said large panel with only said tape being arranged to overlie and straddle the upper edge of a pocket, and a relatively rough surfaced tape secured to the opposite surface of said large panel from said lilament tape, said rough surfaced tape lbeing adapted to frictionally engage the inner surface of a pocket, the filament strands yof said lament tape extending perpendicular with respect to the top edges of said large panel and said small panel.
