My invention relates to diaper flushers and it relates more particularly to means for readily removing excrement from a diaper, and in a sanitary manner.
In the use of diapers, it has been found a messy and unpleasant experience to attempt to remove the excrement from the used diaper, before laundering the same. Attempts have been made to solve this problem by dipping the diaper up and down in the contents of a toiletbowl, or by holding the diaper in the toilet bowl while flushing the toiiet. Neither of these methods have proven satisfactory, for merely raising and lowering the diaper in the water does not adequately remove the excrement in every instance, and flushing the toilet while holding the diaper in the bowl often results in spray from the toilet striking the hand of the operator. In neither event is the result sanitary or adequate to assure'the removal of a suificient quantity of excrement. a
One object of my invention therefore is top'rovide a diaper fiusher which is completely sanitary and which will not result in dirtying the hands of the operator.
Another object of my invention is to provide a diaper fiusher which will assure a more complete removal of excrement than is possible in other methods hitherto known. i
A further object of my invention is to provide a diaper flusher which is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install, efficient in use and simple to operate.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists of a diaper fiusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim. a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, a
r side wall disposed beneath said rim and said water e ector and having a face disposed within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper flusher comprising a base portion, means for securing said base portion to said rim, a hinge device mounted on said base portion, a crank pivotally-mountcd on said hinge device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and a lever portion disposed on the other side of said hinge device; and a releasable diaper holding means disposed substantially at the free end of said lever; .said lever comprising an offset portion adapted to permit the disposal of said holding means beneath said rim and said water ejector and in the vicinity of said stream bed portion when said handle member is' in one position, and to raise said holding means away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when said handle member is in another position; and an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank and adapted to enable said lever portion to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said holding means outside of said rim when not in use.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, 1 have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and organizations of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described. I

My invention is particularly adapted for use on toilet bowls such for instance as the bowl 10 having a receptacle portion 11, an an upper rim portion 12. A suitable water ejector 13 is disposed for ejection of water beneath the rim 12, preferablypas'scs through said rim portion 12, and comprises nozzle portions or other outlets 14 disposed substantially along the lower edge thereof, said outlets 14 being adapted to discharge Water through a suitable channel or channels 15 extending downwardly from said ejector 13 and through the lower portion of the rim 12; said receptacle 11 comprising a side wall 16 dispos'ed'beneath the rim 12 and with an inner face 17 of the side wall 16 disposed within the path of the channel 15 and generally inclined downwardly toward the center of the receptacle 11. The receptacle 11 comprises a lower, static reservoir portion 18, and an upper, stream bed portion 19 comprising generally that portion of the side Wall face 17 which extends between the level 20 of the Water 21 in the static reservoir 18, and the lower edge or opening of the channel 15. When the toilet bowl 10 is flushed, water is ejected downwardly through the nozzles or outlets 14 and channel 15 and is impinged against the inclined face 17 of the stream bed portion 19; said water beingthen guided downwardly in a stream 23 along the inclined face 17 until it strikes the water 21 in the reservoir portion 18. Considerable turbulence 22 is created by the impinging'of the stream 23 against the top 26 of the water 21. As the stream 23 continues to flow, the level of the water 21 rises in the receptacle 11, but with a continuing turbulent condition. When the level cep'tacl'e drain (not shown) is opened and the contents of a the receptacle 1 are drained away, all while the stream 23 continues to flow.
According to my invention I provide a mounting device 25 adapted to be secured to the rim 12. Any suitable securing means may be provided. Thus, I may provide a book 26 of substantially the same size and configuration as the cross-sectional periphery of the rim 12, the outer end of the book 26 terminating in a shank 27 through which projects a suitable stud bolt 28 having a thumb-press handle portion 29 and a blunt-edge tip portion 36. The hook 26 is preferably of flat cross-section, and may be formed of any suitable material such for instance as sheet stainless steel, or may be formed of suitable rigid or elastic material which may be covered with any suitable material such as paint, plastic or rubber. The tip 30 may similarly be covered with any suitable material such as rubber or plastic. Thus, the hook 26 may be superimposed about the rim 12 along one side of the toilet bowl 10, with the shank 27 disposed along the outside of the receptacle 11 and beneath the rim 12. By turning the thumb screw 29, the tip 36 may be advanced toward the outer face 31 of the side wall 16 until suitable stress is imposed against the shank 27 by drawing said shank 27 away from the wall 31 and hence away from the inner end 32 of the hook 26, thereby causing said inner end 32 to bear more tightly against the rim 12, operably to grip said rim 12.
Suitable lugs 33 may be disposed on opposed sides 34 and 35 of the hook 26, and on that portion of the hook 26 which is in the quadrant defined by the vertical axis 36 and horizontal axis 37 of the book 26, and disposed outwardly from the axis 36 and preferably above the axis 37 A suitable hinge pin 38 is mounted on the lugs 33, and hingedly supports a suitable crank such as the bellcrank 39 comprising a handle portion 40 extending outwardly away from the hook 26, and a lever or cantilever portion 41 extending upwardly from the hinge pin 38, and an offset arm 42 extending from the cantilever portion 41. The offset arm is so shaped that when it is in substantial apposition to the hook 26 it will extend over said hook 26 and project downwardly along the inward side of said hook 26 in a manner to project the end portion 43 of the arm 42 substantially beneath the end 32 of the hook 26. When the offset arm 42 is thus disposed, the handle member 40 is in elevated position; and when the handle member 40 is thereafter depressed to its lowermost position, the offset arm is elevated in a manner to swing the end portion inwardly from the rim 12 while being raised until it is disposed above the hook 26. One such offset arm 42 is illustrated in the drawings. As illustrated therein, the arm 42 is of substantially the same configuration as, but of a slightly larger radius than, the hook 26; and its rearward edge comprises a step 44 adapted to abut a step 45 formed on the upper edge of the cantilever portion 41,
said rearward edge portion of the arm 42 being mounted t on one leaf 46 of a hinge 47 whose opposed leaf 48 is secured to the cantilever portion 41. If desired, any other suitable pivotal or sliding means (not shown) may be used in place of the hinge 47 and its associated devices. Also if desired, the arm 42 and cantilever 4'1 may be formed integral and without pivotal relation one with the other. In a preferred form, the center of gravity 75 of the crank 39 is disposed above the pin 38 and outwardly of the vertical axis 76 of the hinge pin 33 when the handle 40 is in lowermost position and is disposed below the pin 38 and inwardly of the axis 76 when the handle 40 is in uppermost position.
A suitable releasable diaper holding means such as the clamp or other holding device 49 is disposed on the end portion 43 of the offset arm 42. The clamp 49 may comprise a jaw 50 fixedly secured to, or formed integrally with, the arm 42, and a movable jaw 51 pivotally mounted with respect to the jaw 50, as at 52 on the end portion 43 of the arm 42, and a spring 53 disposed in a manner to urge the jaws 50 and 51 toward each other. A suitable Ill accumulation of water therein.
thumb release 54 may extend from the movable jaw 51 in a manner to permit a thumb to be pressed thereagainst operably to open the jaws 5t) and 51 against the pressure of the spring 53. Auxiliary holding devices such as the nested depressions 55 and 56 may be formed respectively on the jaws 50 and 51, to aid in holding a diaper.
In operation, the diaper flushing device of my inven tion is mounted on the toilet bowl 10 by securing the mounting device 25 to the rim 12 with the shank 2'7 disposed on the outside of the bowl 10. Preferably, the mounting device 25 is disposed on a side or rearward portion of the bowl 10. The offset arm 42 is then moved into position wherein the step 44 abuts the step 45, and the handle 40 is lowered to substantially its lowermost position as illustrated in Figure 2. The diaper 60 bearing excrement 61 on one face 62 thereof is then held over the receptacle portion 11 of the toilet bowl 1t} and the operator holds one edge 63 of the diaper 69 while permit-- ting the rest of the diaper to drop free, thereby spilling free excrement 61 into the static reservoir 18. The face 62 is then turned toward the hook 26, and the edge 63 of the diaper 60 is then secured to the clamp or other holding means 49. In the construction illustrated in Figure 2, this is achieved by merely depressing the thumb press 54, thereby opening the jaws 50 and 51, and inserting the edge 63 of the diaper 60 between the jaws 50 and 51, whereupon the thumb press 54 is released.
Upon release of the thumb press 54, the weight of the diaper 60 shifts the center of gravity to the inward side of the axis 76, and pulls the offset arm 42 downwardly about the hinge pin 38, thereby raising the handle member 40 while simultaneously transferring the diaper 6t) inwardly and downwardly to avoid contact with the rim 12, and then outwardly and downwardly beneath the rim 12, operably to dispose the face 62 of the diaper 66 beneath the rim 12 and within the path of the channel 15 disposed beneath the nozzle or outlet 14 of the water ejector 13, with a portion of the diaper face 62 substantially resting against the stream bed 17 and above the reservoir 18. The flushing tank (not shown) is then released by any suitable means (not shown), thereby discharging water into the water ejector 13 and causing said water to be emitted through the outlets 14 and channel 15 and to be discharged downwardly therefrom, substantially as illustrated in Figure 3. The downward discharge of the stream 64 from the outlet 14 and channel 3.5 causes said stream to impinge against the excrement 61 on the face 62 operably to dislodge said excrement 61 therefrom and to direct said dislodged excrement back toward the stream bed 17. The continuing flow of the stream 64 during the flushing operation causes the diaper 60 to be urged away from the stream bed 17 by the rapidly fiowing stream of water passing therebetween, while the weight of the diaper 60 urges the face 62 downwardly and forwardly against the rapidly flowing stream. The opposing forces thus tend to set up oscillation of the diaper 60 suspended by its upper end 63, and this oscillation varies the location of the face 62 with respect to the currents of the stream 64, thereby intermittently varying the stream forces acting against the excrement on said face, and thus enhancing the dislodging effect of the stream against said excrement. While the stream 64 is passing downwardly between the diaper 60 and the stream bed E7, the reservoir 18 is no longer static, but rises with the Turbulence 22 of the water in the reservoir causes the lower end 65 of the diaper to be disturbed, thereby further enhancing the dislodging effect of the operation. Moreover, the turbulent surface of the water in the reservoir causes spray 66 to strike the clean face 67 of the diaper 60 operably further intermittently to urge said diaper 60 with its excrement-covered face 62 against the stream 64. The combination of impinged stream, flowing stream, oscillations, intermittent variations, striking and resultant shaking of the diaper while in the path of the stream 64 causes the diaper 60 to be thoroughly flushed of excrement, When the receptacle 11 has been 'drainedin the course of the toiletflushing operation, the operator depresses the handle member 40, thereby raising the offset arm 42 and lifting the clamp or other holding means 49 above the rim 12. This operation moves the flushed diaper 60 inwardly and up wardly to avoid contact with the rim 12, and 'then outwardly and upwardly above the rim. The flushed diaper 60 is thus lifted out of the toilet bowl 10. The operator need merely depress the thumb press 54 and remove the diaper 60.
When the diaper flushing device is provided with an offset arm 42 which is pivotally connected to the cantilever portion 41 as at 47, the offset arm 42 may then be pivotally retracted outwardly and downwardly and substantially against the handle member 40 so as to be disposed in an out-of-the-way position wherein it will not interfere with the lowering of the toilet seat 68. V
In cases where the offset arm 42 is fixedly related to the cantilever portion 41, the handle member 40 may be raised operably to cause the offset arm 42 substantially to embrace the rim 12, and to dispose the clamp 49 beneath the rim 12, substantially in a manner similar to that illustrated in Figure 3. In this position, the upper portion of the offset arm 42 is disposed in substantially close proximity to the top 69 of the rim 12, and beneath the bottom 70 of the toilet seat 68 when said seat is in lowered position, as illustrated in Figure 3. In said lowered position, the toilet seat 68 is maintained at a spaced-relationto the 'top 69 of the rim 12.by suitable resilientbumpers or spacing members 71. The offset arm 42 may be so arranged-as to size and shape as to be enabled, to be disposed between said top 69 and said bottom 70rwithout interference, when the clamp 49 is disposed beneath said rim 12; When the clamp 49 is so disposed while not in use, it may be brought into position whereinit is ready for use, merely by raising the toilet seat 68 and depressing, the handle member 40 until the'c'lamp 49 has beenlraised intoits uppermost position. It is now ready for mounting the diaper substantially as hereinbeforedescribed.
I am'awarethat the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and Ltherefore desire the present embodiments to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters. Patent is:
1. A diaper fiusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, a side wall disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and having aface disposed within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprisingastream bedportion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper flusher' comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge device mounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinge device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and a lever portion disposed on the other side of said hinge device; an offsetarm extending from said lever portion; means for transmitting controlled motion from said lever portion to said offset arm; and a clamp member disposed substantially at the free end of said offset arm; said clamp member comprising means for alternately engaging a diaper with said clamp and releasing said diaper therefrom; the arrangement of parts be'ingsuch that when said base portion is mounted onsaid rim with said handle member extending exteriorly of said bowl, said clamp is so disposedon said oifset arm, and said offset arm and lever are so disposed withrelation to said rim that said clamp is adapted -to-be disposed beneath said rim andsaid water ejector and in the vicinity-of said stream bed portion when said handle member; is in one '6 position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above saidrim when said handle member is in another position; and an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank and adapted to enable said offset arm to be swung'outwardly in a manner to dispose said clamp member outside of saidrim when not in use.
2. A diaper flusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposedrsubstantially within said rim, a side wall disposed beneath said rim and said'water ejector and having a face disposed Within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoirportion; said diaper flusher comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge device mounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinge device; said crankcomprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hingedevice, and a lever portion disposed on the other side of said hinge device; an offset arm extending from said lever portion; means for transmitting con trolled motion from said lever portion to said offset arm; and a-clamp member disposed substantially at the free end of saidroffset arm; said clamp member comprising means for alternately engaging a diaper with said clamp and releasing said diaper therefrom; an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank; the arrangement of parts being such that when said base portion is mounted on said rim with said handle member extending exteriorly of said bowl, said clamp is so disposed on said offset arm, and said auxiliary pivot, offset arm and lever are so disposed with relation to said rim that said clamp is adapted to be disposed beneath said rim and saidwater ejector and in the vicinity of ,said stream bed portion when said handle member is in one position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when said handle member is in another position; and when said handle member is in said last-mentioned position, said offset arm is adapted to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said clamp member outside of said rim when not in, use; the center of gravity of said crank and offset arm assembly being disposed beneath'said hinge device when in said first-mentioned position, and above said hinge device when in said second-mentioned position, and said center of gravity crossing the vertical axis of said hinge device when said assembly moves from one of said positions to the other'of said positions.
3. A diaper fiusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, a side wall disposed beneath said rim and said waterejector and having a face disposed within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper fiusher comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge devicemounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinge device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and an offset arm disposed on the other side or" said hinge device; and a clamp member disposed substantially at the free end of said offset arm; said clamp member comprising means for alternately engaging a diaper With said clamp and releasing said diaper therefrom; an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank; the arrangement of parts being such that when said base portion is mounted on said rim with I said handle member extending exteriorly of said bowl, said clamp is. so disposed on said oifset arm, and said offset arm and lever are so disposed with relation to said rim that said clamp is adapted to be disposed beneath sai'dtrim and said water ejector and in the vicinity of said stream bed portion when said handle member is in one position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when said handle member is in another position; and when said handle memher is in. said last-mentioned position, said offset arm is adapted to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said clamp member outside of said rim when not in use.
4. A diaper fiusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, a side wall disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and having a face disposed within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper ilusher comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge device mounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinge device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and an offset arm disposed on the other side of said hinge device; and a clamp member disposed substantially at the free end of said offset arm; said clamp member comprising means for alternately engaging a diaper with said clamp and releasing said diaper therefrom; an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank; the arrangement of parts being such that when said base portion is mounted on said rim with said handle member extending exteriorly of said bowl, said clamp being so disposed on said offset arm, and said offset arm and lever are so disposed with relation to said rim that said clamp is adapted to be disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and in the vicinity of said stream bed portion when said handle member is in one position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when said handle member is in another position; and when said handle member is in said last-mentioned position, said offset arm is adapted to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said clamp member outside of said rim when not in use; the center of gravity of said crank being disposed beneath said hinge device when in said first-mentioned position, and above said hinge device when in said second-mentioned position, and said center of gravity crossing the vertical axis of said hinge device when said crank moves from one of said positions to the other of said positions.
5. A diaper fiusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, a side Wall disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and having a face disposed within the path of Water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper flusher comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge device mounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinged device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and a lever portion disposed on the other side of said hinge device; an oifset arm extending from said lever portion; means for transmitting controlled motion from said lever portion to said offset arm; and releasable diaper holding means disposed substantially at the free end of said offset arm; an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank; the arrangement of parts being such that when said base portion is mounted on said rim with said handle member extending exteriorly of said bowl; said diaper holding means is so disposed on said offset arm, and said offset arm and lever are so disposed with relation to said rim that said holding means is adapted to be disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and in the vicinity of said stream bed portion when said handle member is in one position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when said handle member is in another position; and when said handle member is in said last-mentioned position, said offset arm is adapted to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said holding means outside of said rim when not in use.
6. A diaper fiusher adapted to be used in connection with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, 2. side wall disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and having a face disposed within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper flusher comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge device mounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinge device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and a lever portion disposed on the other side of said hinge device; an offset arm extending from said lever portion; means for transmitting contrciled motion from said lever portion to said offset arm; and releasable diaper holding means disposed substantially at the free end of said offset arm; an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank; the arrangement of parts being such that when said base portion is mounted on said rim with said handle member extending exteriorly of said how]; said diaper holding means is so disposed on said offset arm, and said olfset arm and lever are so disposed with relation to said rim that said holding means is adapted to be disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and in the vicinity of said stream bed portion when said handle member is in one position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when. said handle member is in another position; and when said handle member is in said last-mentioned position, said offset arm is adapted to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said holding means outside of said rim when not in use.
7. A diaper fiusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, a side wall disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and having a face disposed within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side Wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper flusher comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge device mounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinge device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and a lever portion disposed on the other side of said hinge device; an offset arm extending from said lever portion; means for transmitting controlled motion from said lever portion to said offset arm; and releasable diaper holding means disposed substantially at the free end of said offset arm; an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank; the arrangement of parts being such that when said base portion is mounted on said rim with said handle member extending exteriorly of said bowl, said diaper holding means is so disposed on said offset arm, and said offset arm and lever are so disposed with relation to said rim that said holding means is adapted to be disposed beneath said rim and said Water ejector and in the vicinity of said stream bed portion when said handle member is in one position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when said handle member is in another position; and when said handle member is in said last-mentioned position, said oli'set arm is adapted to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said holding means outside of said rim when not in use.
8. A diaper flusher adapted to be used in conjunction with a toilet bowl having an upper rim, a water ejector disposed substantially within said rim, a side wall disposed beneath said rim and said water ejector and having a face disposed within the path of water ejected by said water ejector, said side wall face comprising a stream bed portion and a static reservoir portion; said diaper flushcr comprising a base portion; means for securing said base portion to said rim; a hinge device mounted on said base portion; a crank pivotally mounted on said hinge device; said crank comprising a handle member disposed on one side of said hinge device, and a lever portion disposed on the other side of said hinge device; an offset arm extending from said lever portion; means for transmitting controlled motion from said lever portion to said offset arm; and
releasable diaper holding means disposed substantially at the free end of said ofiset arm; an auxiliary pivot disposed on said crank; the arrangement of parts being such that when said base portion is mounted on said rim with said handle member extending exteriorly of said bowl; said diaper holding means is so disposed on said ofiset arm, and said offset arm and lever are so disposed with relation to said rim that said holding means is adapted to be disposed beneath said rim and said Water ejector and in the vicinity of said stream bed portion when said handle member is in one position, and to be swung away from said stream bed portion and substantially above said rim when said handle member is in another position; and when said handle member is in said last-mentioned position, said offset arm is adapted to be swung outwardly in a manner to dispose said holding means outside of said rim when not in use.
