Description

Sept. 20, 1955 JONES 2,718,022
FOUNTAIN MOP Filed Oct. 19, 1949 Sx Mw 5 5 Ffge. 6 6 V 'gli United States Patent O l 2,718,022 FOUNTAIN MOP Leonard Jones, Jackson, Miss., assigner to R. E. Warwick, Jackson, Miss. Application October 19, 1949, Serial No. 122,262 2 Claims. (Cl. 15-128) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in mops and more particularly to a fountain mop designed primarily for use in washing automobiles and other vehicles.
An important object of the invention is to provide a fountain mop provided with a substantially long handle and whereby water may be supplied to the head of the mop for use in washing automobiles, or for other purposes to thus enable the user to reach the various parts of an automobile while washing the same without the usual inconvenience of getting wet.
A further object of the invention is to provide a substantially flat spray head which may be easily and quickly L placed into position in the canvas pocket of a conventional removable mop and which is held in position by the frame of the mop head.
A still further object is to provide a fountain or wet mop of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the puiposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a top plan view;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on a line 2--2 of Figure 1 Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 3--3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a bottom perspective view of the spray head for the mop.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 Idesignates a mop swab of a conventional type and provided with a canvas or other suitable fabric pocket 6 at its upper central portion for receiving the mop head 7 of wire frame construction and to which a pivoted handle socket 8 is secured for attaching a handle (not shown) to the mop. The bottom of the canvas pocket 6 is perforated as shown at 9.'
A hollow spray head 10 of substantially fiat triangular shape is positioned in pocket 6 and is held therein by the frame of the mop head 7. The spray head 10 comprises a top imperforate metal plate 11 and a bottom perforated metal plate 12 which may be soldered or otherwise suitably secured at its edges to the top plate 11.
A hose tting or coupling 13 is connected to the spray head 10 by means of a short length of pipe or tubing 14 soldered or otherwise secured to the top plate 11 of the spray head at a point offset from the longitudinal center line of said spray head and between the handle sockets connection to the frame and the base of the triangular spray head.
In the operation of the device the spray head 10 is placed in position in pocket 6 of the mop and the mop head frame 7 then placed in the pocket on top of the spray head to hold the spray head in position in the pocket. After said spray head 10 has been positioned in the pocket 6 the frame 7 prevents the spray head 10 from slipping out because the frame sides flare out toward the sides of the pocket 6, thereby filling the space between the spray head 10 and the top portion of the pocket 6 and providing a snug fit for said spray head 10. A hose is 2,718,022 Patented Sept. 20, 1955 then connected to the coupling 13 to supply water to the spray head 10 which is then fed to the swab 5 through the perforated bottom 12 of the spray head and the perforated bottom 9 of the pocket 6, to thus supply water to the mop as the surface of an automobile or other object is cleaned.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and ydescribed a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims. Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1. In a substantially llat and triangular fountain mop having a detachable stranded mop head provided with a pocket, a substantially elongated triangular pocket retained spray head, and a wire retaining frame in said pocket bearing upon said spray head and having an associated handle socket pivotally connected thereto at the substantial midpoint of the longitudinal center line of said spray head for pivotal motion longitudinally of the spray head, the combination including: a tubular hose connector secured to said spray head and communicating with the interior of said spray head through the top thereof and being located offset from the longitudinal center line of said spray head and between the handle sockets connection to the frame and the base of the spray head.
2. In a fountain mop the combination including: a swab having a substantially triangular shape and having a perforated triangular shaped depending pocket within the central portion of sai-d swab and having triangular corner members forming the upper part of said pocket; a substantially flat elongate triangular spray head having a hollow portion defined by a substantially depending dish shaped portion having a perforated bottom and perforated sides, said perforations being in substantial fluid ow alignment with said perforations in said pocket, said spray head having a substantially mperforate top member peripherally secured to said dish shaped portion, said top member having a tubular hose connection transversely olfset from the longitudinal centerline thereof and the midpoint of said longitudinal center line toward the base of said triangular spray head, the whole head being removably insertable into said pocket and substantially completely filling said pocket; a wire retaining frame substantially conforming to and removably engaged with and into said triangular corner recesses above said head and having thereon a pivoted socket located substantially at said midpoint for attaching thereinto a handle, said socket having pivotal motion longitudinally of said spray head; said retaining frame positioning said swab and said head in operable unshifting relationship substantially matingly aligning for fluid flow through the perforations of said spray head and said swab pocket; and sai-d hose connection providing a biasing means for depressing the swab forwardly or rearwardly of the handle socket.
