(Cl. 16151) This invention relates generally to a center hung double acting door mounted upon a vertical hinge located beneath the door.
One object of the present invention is to provide a door of the above construction having mechanisms for adjusting the door both vertically and horizontally to suit conditions of operation.
A further object is to provide a swinging door mechanism of the above nature, which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very efiicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing, one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 represents a side view of the lower end of a swinging door, partly in section, to illustrate the appearance of the cooperating wedge and arm for adjusting the door both vertically and horizontally.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on a larger scale, taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view, on a larger scale, of the adjustable arm, the wedge, and the pair of door locking screws.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral indicates a center hung door having hollow sides which enclose mechanism for adjusting the door horizontally and vertically with respect to an upstanding bottom tapered hinge 11 secured to a threshold 10a.
The upper part of the hinge 11 is adapted to be received within a tapered hinge socket 21a formed in the bottom of a rear rectangular section 22 of a horizontal adjusting arm 21.
The adjusting arm 21 is provided with an inclined upper surface which engages with an inclined bottom face 19 of a triangular wedge 16 having a horizontal top face 17 and a vertical end face 18.
Located within a pair of recesses 11a and 11b extending through the wedge 16 .are a pair of horizontal screws 12 and 13 having Allen type heads 14 and 15 located outside the left hand edge of the door, as viewed in Figs. 1 and 2.
The screws 12 and 13 are adapted to fit within a pair of elongated open grooves 22a and 22b formed in the upper portion of the rectangular rear portion 22 of the horizontal arm 21 to permit the wedge 16 to move down to its lowermost position.
The arm 21 is provided with a tapered intermediate section 23, offset downwardly from the rectangular rear section 22, said tapered section 23 terminating in a reduced cylindrical front shank 24 adapted to be mountedwithin a recess 25a in a rectangular block 25.
The block 25 is rigidly secured to both sides of the door 10 by means of a pair of ofiset horizontal machine screws 26, 27 having enlarged conical slotted heads 28, 29 fitted within flat washers 30, 31 located outside the outer sections of the door 10.
In order to hold the arm 21 in any desired adjusted horizontal position, provision is made of a set screw 32 extending laterally out of the block 25 and having an Allen head recess 33.
Operation In operation, the arm 21 and the wedge 16 will first be installed in the door and locked to the sides thereof by means of the screws 26, 27. The door will then be placed upon the upstanding hinge 11, after which it may be adjusted vertically without removing it from the hinge, by means of the heads 14 and 15 of the screws 12 and 13, using a screw driver having an Allen wrench bit, which will cause the wedge 16 to slide up or down over the inclined surface 20 of the rear portion of the arm 21.
The horizontal adjustment of the door may be accomplished by loosening the set screw'32 in the block 25 by inserting the Allen screw driver bit through an opening 34 in the side wall of the door 10 into alignment with said set screw, whereupon the shank 24 of the arm 21 may be manually moved longitudinally in the hole 25a of the block 25 to the point desired by pushing or pulling the door until the desired clearance is obtained. The set screw 32 will then be tightened against the shank 24.
One advantage of the present invention is that it entirely eliminates the use of shims for adjusting a double door horizontally and vertically.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only and that the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms without depart ing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
1. In a mechanism for adjusting a center-hung hollow swinging door horizontally and vertically, a wedge member located within the lower portion of said door, a hori zontal arm having an inclined upper face at one end engaging said wedge member, means to advance said wedge member against said inclined face to raise or lower said door, and releasable means for securing the door to said arm and permitting relative movement thereof, to adjust the horizontal position of said door.
2. In a mechanism for laterally adjusting a double-hung swinging door, a horizontal longitudinal arm located within the lower portion of said door adjacent one edge thereof, said arm being slidable horizontally within said door and having an upwardly and outwardly inclined section on its outer end, a wedge member resting upon said inclined section, manually operated means for moving said wedge member horizontally to raise and lower said door, and releasable means for detachably locking the other'end of said arm to said door comprising a pair of olfset screw members passing laterally through the opposite sides of said door and connected to said arm.
3. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which said releasable means includes a block rigidly secured to said door, said block having a cylindrical aperture for slidably embracing a cylindrical reduced section of said arm, and a transverse set screw for detachably locking said reduced section to said block.
