Application July 28, 1952, Serial No. 301,177
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-93) This invention relates to ventilated garments and more particularly to a device for Ventilating an outer garment such as a mans conventional jacket or coat or the like.
Broadly, the invention comprises a garment having zipper controlled devices for Ventilating the arms, arm pits and body of the wearer, said devices being so disposed that the same while permitting maximum ventilation will be nevertheless relatively unnoticeable and will consequently in no way detract from the appearance of the garment.
It is a prime object of the present invention to provide a Ventilating device that is readily applied to an outer garment whereby the garment may be converted into a comfortable garment regardless of the temperature.
Another object of the invention is to provide an outer garment having sleeves with means for Ventilating the arms, arm pits and body of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide an outer garment with Ventilating means which Vis normally concealed by the sleeves of the garment.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an outer garment with Ventilating means which is normally substantially concealed in the folds of the seams of the garment.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide an outer garment with Ventilating means characterized by means for concealing the clothing and body of the wearer at all times during use of the garment.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a ventilated garment which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of a mans coat embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the coat with one arm raised.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view of the inside of the coat, parts being broken away.
Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the slide fastener assembly, in partly open position.
Fig. 5 is a rear view thereof.
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on the plane of the line 6 6 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the parts in open position.
Referring to the drawings, a mans outer jacket or coat is shown for convenience in illustrating the invention. It will be understood however that the invention might be embodied in mens, womens and childrens outer sleeved garments of various types without departing from the principle of the invention.
The jacket includes a front section 5 and a rear section 6 fastened together at their side edges by stitching forming seams 7. The jacket sections are formed with arm holes at their sides and sleeves 8 are secured by stitching around the peripheries of the arm holes, forming seams 9.
Each sleeve is tubular and is formed with an outer section 10 and an inner section 11 fastened together by rows of stitching forming outer and inner seams 12 and 13, respectively. The inner underside of each sleeve at its juncture with the side edges of the front and rear ice sections 5 and 6 of the jacket constitutes the arm pit as indicated at 14.
ln accordance with the invention, the side edges of the front and rear sections 5 and 6, respectively, of the jacket between the points 15, 15 are not stitched together but are left unfastened to provide openings 16 at these points. These unfastened side edges, however, are turned inwardly upon themselves to form folds 17 and 18, respectively, as shown in Fig. 7. hastened to these folds at each side of the jacket is a slide fastener assembly or Stringer including a pair of spaced opposed tapes 19 and 20 having beaded edges 21 and 22, respectively. Tape 19 is secured to the folded edge 17 by a row of stitching 23, and tape 20 is secured to the folded edge 18 by a row of stitching 24. A series of spaced apart interlocking fastener elements Z5 are attached to the opposed beaded edges 21 and 22. On the series of fastener elements, a slider 26 is arranged in the well known manner and pivotally attached to the slider is a pull member 27 by which the slider is adapted to be moved longitudinally along the elements to open and close the fastener in the usual manner. According to the invention, a strip 28 of tine mesh, preferably nylon, is fastened to the inner surfaces of the tapes 19 and 20 by rows of stitching 29 located inwardly of the lines of stitching 23 and 24 that fasten the tapes to the folded over edges.
The rows of stitching 29 limit the hinging or opening section of the beaded edges 21 and 22, carrying the fastener elements 25, and inasmuch as the mesh strip 28 is secured thereacross, the opening between the hinged edges of the tape is always closed by the mesh strip thereby concealing the clothing and body of the wearer behind it but permitting air to pass therethrough for Ventilating the body of the wearer.
To close the openings 16 between the folded edges 17 and 18, the slider 26 is manipulated along the interlocking elements 25 whereby they are cammed into interlocking relation whereby the folded edges are drawn into juxtaposition with each other for sealing the openings. It will be noted that when the slide fastener is in open position, the strip 28 of mesh is drawn flat as shown in Fig. 7, but when the slide fastener is in closed position, the strip 28 is contracted and assumes a bulged out appearance in cross section as shown in Fig. 6. When the folded over edges 17 and 18 of the front and rear sections 5 and 6, respectively, are in closed juxtaposed position, the slide fastener assemblies are concealed from View and only the seams appear.
Also in accordance with the invention, the side inner seams 13 of the sleeves 8, between the points 30, 30, are not stitched together but are left unfastened to provide openings 31 therealong at these points. The unfastened side edges are turned inwardly to form folds similar to the folds 17 and 18 in the front and rear sections, respectively. Stitched to these folds in each sleeve by rows of stitching is a slide fastener assembly similar to the slide fastener assembly secured to the folded edges 17 and 18 of the front and rear sections 5 and 6, respectively, of the body of the jacket, so that when the slide fastener is open, air is permitted to pass through the opening 31 to ventilate the arm of the wearer, but the strip 28 of mesh conceals the clothing and arm from View.
It will be noted that the openings 16 in the front and rear sections 5 and 6 of the coat, and the openings 31 in the sleeves, extend inwardly toward the arm pits 14 to points very close to said arm pits so that the arm pits of the wearer are also ventilated.
The folded over edges at the openings 16 in the front and rear sections 5 and 6, of the coat and the folded over edges of the openings 31 in the sleeves 8 engage each other to conceal the slide fasteners when said slide fasteners are closed, but such engaging edges are permitted to hinge outwardly to permit opening movement of the slide fasteners. Normally the openings in the coat body and sleeves are covered by the sleeves.
Any other means in place of slide fasteners may be employed to provide the Ventilating means, such as snaps, laces, buttons, or hooks and eyes.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
An outer garment having a body portion with front and rear sections, seams joining the side edges of said front and rear sections, one of said seams having an opening therealong, a slide fastener device including tapes secured to the edges of the opening in said seam in offset relation to the opening to provide a tortuous passage for air, and a strip of air pervious mesh material connected to said tapes and overlying the opening for concealing the clothing and body of the wearer, said tape being folded over the mesh material, means stitching the tape and mesh together and the edges of said seam being folded over and secured to said slide fasteners.
