Description

Ocf- 12, 1954 w. QBORNHUETTER 2,691,721
LIGHTING FIXTURE Filed May 20, 1952 Patented Oct. 12, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LIGHTING FIXTURE William Charles Bornhuetter, Maplewood, N. J.
Application May 20, 1952, Serial No. 288,899
1 Claim. 1
This invention is an improved lighting xture, particularly a holder for the bulb of an electric lamp adapted to be attached to a support such as an article of furniture.
It is an object of this improvement to provide a holder of a Simple construction, to be securely mounted on the support, adjustable into the desired position to give light when required.
The fixture is clearly described herein and the construction is illustrated in the drawings. But alterations in structural details may be made without deviating from the design in which the invention resides.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a View showing the xture mounted at the head of a couch or bed.
Figure 2 is a front view of a base or mounting member for the iixture.`V
Figure 3 is a rear view of said member; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view of said member.
Part of a bed, such as the head board thereof, is indicated at I, but the fixture can be mounted on any other convenient support. The fixture comprises a base member 2 with a swivelled piece 3 on one face. This piece carries on a portion 4 cut and bent out at right angles, as shown at 5, a xed hollow boss 6, to which is affixed one end of the flexible tubular casing 1. At the other end of the casing 'I is a lamp socket 8, in which is a knob switch 9. The socket carries the lamp bulb I0. The boss 4 is open and through it and the casing 'I is passed the cord I I containing the supply conductors for the lamp I0. At its outer end the cord is attached to a plug I2 having metal prongs I3 for insertion into the outlet plug of a wiring system.
The base is shown as rounded in outline, with a straight bent edge I4, and it is affixed to the support 2 by screws I5 through the edge I4. The member 2 is separated from the support except along said edge I4.
The piece 3 is circular and is pivotally connected to the base 2 by a central rivet I6. The
base has a circular groove I'I on itslinner face concentric with the rivet, and the piece 3 a matching groove I8. In the groove is a round ring I9 with cut ends as at 20, set out of line and compressed between the base 2 and piece 3 by the rivet to serve as a spring, pressing tightly against both the base 2 and piece 3, so that the piece will be held firmly in all adjusted positions.
When the fixture is mounted the casing 4 is manipulated to bring the lamp to give the light where it is needed. The casing 'i can be bent at will.
Having described my invention what I believe to be new is:
A lighting xture comprising a flat base with a straight edge and bent laterally along said edge to be secured in offset position to a support, said base having a rounded portion separate from said edge, a flexible tubular casing bearing a lamp socket at one end, conductors in said casing leading to said socket, a at round piece having a part cut and bent out afiixed to said casing, said rounded portion of the base and said piece being pivotally connected face to face by a central rivet, the rounded portion of said base and said piece having relatively narrow matching grooves concentric with said rivet, and an elastic circular ring with sprung ends in said groove engaging said piece and said portion of the base to hold the piece in adjusted position on the base.
