1 Claim. 1

This invention relates to artists equipment and has special reference to an artists palette.

One important object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of an artists palette adapted to hold a pad of disposable paint mixing sheets.

A second important object of the invention is to provide an artists palette having disposable paint receiving means.

A third important object of the invention is to provide an artists palette wherein a support is provided for a pad of disposable paint mixing sheets and wherein means are provided whereby the used portion of each sheet may be torn ofi' from the sheets beneath.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts, and:

Fig. 1 is a plan view of a alette constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 3 is a slightly enlarged section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a slightly enlarged section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.

In the embodiment of the invention as herein shown there is provided a plate ll) of metal or other rigid material and, in the present instance, this plate is of general rectangular form. In this plate is provided a thumb receiving opening H and at the adjacent edge of the plate is a recessed portion 12, provided so that when the users thumb is inserted upwardly through the opening II, the terminal joint of the thumb may be bent down to extend into the recessed portion l2, thus holding the alette firmly in position.

At two'of the joining edges of the plate l0, these edges being those remote from the opening I I, the plate 10 has an upwardly bent portion l3, which extends along each of the said edges. From the upwardly bent portion I3 at each edge there extends over the adjacent part of the plate H] a flat spring rib l4 terminating in a downwardly inclined tearing edge I5. From the inner and outer edges of each flat member l4 upwardly extending guides I6 are each curved inwardly as at IT.

At I8 is shown a pad of disposable sheets, each provided with a thumb opening l9 and a recessed portion 20 conforming to the plate I 0. This pad is held by the tearing edge portion 5 at both the rear and the left hand edges of the palette and the sheets may be torn off after use along the tearing edge portions I5. These sheets are pref- 2 erably made of a material which is non-absorbent to the oil and thinner of the oil paint to be used with the palette.

Similarly on each of the ribs M is arranged a paint receiving strip 2|. This strip may be of disposable material or it may be of such material as may be cleansed from any paint thereon, by the application of a suitable paint remover such as turpentine.

In using the invention, the collapsible tubes, common to oil paint supplies, will have a portion of the contents of each selected tube squeezed on to a slip 2 l Then with the artists brush a quantity of deposited paint may be transferred to the mixing or blending sheet I8 exposed on top of the pad. Thus a mixture of paint from different tubes may be made to suit the necessities of the artist.

When the artist has finished painting, he may simply tear off the top sheet of the pad and may remove the slips 2|, which may be replaced, if disposable, by other slips or if meant for repeated use, may be cleansed and replaced.

By means of this arrangement, artists are saved from a great deal of disagreeable cleaning operations necessary with the ordinary type of palette.

It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

What is claimed is:

An artists palette comprising a substantially rectangular plate provided with an upwardly extending flange along two adjacent sides thereof, said flange extending at right angles to said plate, an integral flat rib extending at right angles to said flange and parallel to said plate, said flat rib being provided at its inner edge with a downwardly inclined tearing edge, and. said flat rib being provided at its inner and outer edges with inwardly curved integral upstanding guide tongues having reverted extremities extending toward each other.
