Description
July 13, 1954 L. A. PERSON RECTAL MEDICATOR Filed March 2, 1953 Louzlr A Pier-Jon ATTORNEY Patented July 13, 1954 UNITED STATES OF'F I CIEi R'EGTAE MEDIG'ATOR Louis A. Pierson, Meriden; Conn;
Application March 2, 1953, Serial No. 339348 5 Glaims; (Cl. 1-28261) This invention relates to a r-ecta-I-medicator and has for an object to provide" an improved rectal medicator so as to provide a means for rectal medication in placeof rectal suppositories.
A further object of this invention is to provide a rectal medicator that will providefor escapeof flatus without contaminating themedicinebeing inserted, which may be so manipulated that'the' flatus, often present and'usually disturbed by'the insertion of the rectal medi'cator, may be first expelled, and. then the" medicine may be dispensed into the rectum.
A further object'ofthis invention is to provide a; rectal medicator that maybe used forinsertingliquid medicine into therectum and yet keep" it free of contamination from flatus'while it is" in"-- serted, which may be manipulated to' expel anyflatu's' present in the rectum beforethe medicine is inserted.
Still a further object of this invention is to' provide" an improved rectal medicator for inserting liquidmedicine into the rectum in a measured amount by providing a collapsible container'of' a dosage" size so that it can be inserted into the rectum by squeezing'the' container with pressure along thelengtlr of 'the'thumb.
Briefly, this improved rectal medicat'or pro vides a container for a dosage of rectal'medicine, a" medicator tube on" the container, and a rectum" penetrating tube threaded onto the medicato'r' L tube; the rectum penetrating tube havingv an en'- largedend limiting the'insertion of'the tube into the rectum; and a dispensing opening at the penetrating end of the tube; and a fi'atus escape opening in' its enlarged end. Before inserting the rectum tube, themedica'tor and rectum tubes are so manipulated that there is a passage open through the rectum tube from the penetrating end to the enlarged end, which permits the. flatus to. escape. without contaminating, the medicine. After the fiatus has escaped, the tubes are manipulated to-provide a continuous passage from the medicine container through both tubes to within the'rectum then the container is squeezed-to dispause the medicine within therectum as desired.
With the" foregoing and other objects in view, this" invention comprises the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, claimed and disclosed in the accompan-ying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1" isan elevational view of the improved rectal me'di'cator of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a View similar to- Fig; 1', but partly in section;
Fig. B is'an exploded, partly sectional vie'w; on a much larger scale.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view; of the medicator in flatus expelling position;
Fig. 5-- is-a similar view inmedicine dispensing position;
There is shown at It therectal medicator' ofthis invention. This rectal medicator' Inincl'udes a small diametered cylindrical rectum penetrating tube II, preferably of substantially uniform diameter from its rectum penetrating end I2 to its opposite end I t where it'forms a' juncturewith its large hollow threaded end I5, this threaded end I5 being of so substantial a size" that it will not readily enter there'ct'um as does the tube H, but instead; provides a stop limiting the insertion of the tube I I. Intermediate the'jun'cture I' l-and the threaded end I5 there are provided at least oneor" more sideopenings I-fitherethrough, the
' openings lfibeing so'located' asto remain outside of the rectum when the tube I I has been inserted. A dispensing'side opening I! is located adjacent the rectum penetrating end I2 of the tube II.
A- medicator' tube 20 is also provided with a large threaded end- 2I having external threads 22" to cooperatewith the threads 23" of therectumtube threaded end I5, and the medicator tube 20* has an open end- 24 through which the medicine passes whenitis being dispensed.
The diameter of themedicator tube 26' is about that'of the diameter of the rectum tube rectum penetrating end I I, and the length of the medicator'tube 2il-is such, in relation to the large bore portionend' I 5 of the rectum tube I I that manipulation of thethreaded ends of the tubes II and 20 may cause the open end 24-01 the tube 20 tobe spacedfrom the juncture l i within the tube II and its end I 5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4', or may cause the open end 24' to seat within the juncture I4 and thus provide .a' continuous passageway through the tube 2!! and the tube I I.
Attached to the medicator tube 20, as by in*-- ternalthreads 25 thereon cooperating with ex-- ternal threads 2% is a medicine container 21. This container 2'! is a collapsible tube, preferably of polyethylene plastic because of its elastic properties, but obviously may be of any suitable material. Both tubes II and 28 will also be" of suitable material, possibly the same as the container. As shown, the container 21 is about twoand one half inches long, elliptical, tapering and about the width of the average thumb, just the size to hold a single dosage of medicine, so that the medicine can be squeezed out by pressure alongthe length of the thumb.
The container 21 may be reused or thrown away, or the rectum tube may be saved for reuse, depending on the cost of cleaning and sterilizing as compared to the cost of the original article.
In operation, this rectal medicator is intended to take the place of rectum suppositories, and while particularly intended for liquid medicines, may likewise be used with paste medicines. Before the rectum tube I I is inserted, the medicator tube 20 is manipulated to the position shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4, with the open end 24 of tube 20 spaced from the juncture l4. Inasmuch as this will not be externally visible, the medicator tube thread 22 may be first threaded into rectum tube thread 23 as far as it will go, which of course will seat the open end 24 of medicator tube 20 against juncture 14, as shown in Fig. 5. Then, the thread 22 is backed out one turn, separating the end of the medicator tube from the juncture [4 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Then, the rectum tube is inserted with the parts in this position. Any flatus within the rectum, disturbed by the insertion of the tube ll, will pass through dispensing opening ll into the tube I i and then out side openings it to the atmosphere without contaminating the medicine in the container 21. After all the flatus has been expelled, the container 21 is rotated the one turn necessary to move the medicator tube 20 into seating position against juncture M as shown in Fig. 5 to provide a continuous passage from the container 2'1 through medicator tube 283 and rectum tube II to the dispensing opening I'l. Then, the thumb is squeezed along the length of the container 21 to thus dispense the medicine from container 2? through both tubes 2% and H and the side opening I! against the wall of the rectum, thus avoiding head-on-pressure, and providing immediate contact of the medicine with the wall of the rectum for absorption of the medicine.
While the device has been shown and the structure described in detail, it is obvious that this invention is not to be considered as being limited to the exact form disclosed, and that changes in detail and construction may be made therein within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
