According to my invention the h-inging head, including the side handles and pivot arms, is
one embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved hypodermic syringe.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 2 of the upper part of the syringe showing the plunger hinged to one side for purposes of charging the syringe.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line of 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the yoke member, per se.
Referring now to the drawing there is provided a tubular casing or holder l having the section M for engagement with the female bushing tubular needle l extending from both ends of the hub, the longer outer part l5a of the needle serving to administer the The main body part of the hub I3 18 provided with a knurled surface [6, and the provided with a pair of opposed elongated openings I 7 in order to permit visible inspection of the ampul when fitted therein.
The opposite end of the holder i0 is provided with a 'hinging yoke or head member t8 which comprises a cup-shaped housing [9 having an the yoke I8 upon said holder. There is suflicient spring in the pivot arms and the barrel to allow them to be assembled by a snap action.
Thus all of the exposed parts of the heads including the housing 19, the handle arms 23 and the pivot arms 22 are just one unitary structure spring 35 and thus lock the yoke I8 in aligned position with the holder ID. The spring 35 surrounds the plunger rod 30 and has one end seated against an interior flange 36 provided within the sleeve 34 and the opposite end abuts the inner surface of the closed end 2E! of yoke 18. The sleeve is limited in its movement into the body shell It) by reason of the length of the trunnions 25 that project inwardly of the inner surface of the holder in and against which the sleeve can abut as a stop as best shown in Fig. 2.
In the operation of the device when it is desired to charge the holder H! with an ampul the thumb piece 33 will be pulled outwardly to a position where the sleeve 34 will clear the end of the holder 10 whereupon the yoke i8 and plunger 30 can be pivoted to one side to a position as shown in Fig. 3. It is to be noted that the upper end of the holder in is provided with a pair of opposed cutouts 31 so as to permit the yoke and plunger to be pivoted to either side of said holder leaving its open end free to be charged with the ampul. The yoke member will then be brought back into an aligned position with the body shell by manipulation of the handle members whereupon the sleeve 34 will automatically cam over either one of the cutouts 31 and when into the open the holder Hi to maintain such aligned position. The headed end of the plunger rod may then be secured to the plunger of the ampul and the syringe will then be ready for operation in the usual manner.
One form of the invention is presented herein for the purpose of exemplification but it will be appreciated that the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other structural modified forms coming equally within the scope of the appended claims.

1. A hypodermic syringe comprising in combination a tubular casing, means at the lower end of said casing for carrying a needle, the upper end being open to receive an ampul, a hinging head for closing said upper end of the casing after insertion of the ampul comprising a hollow inverted cuphaped housing of substantially the same diameter as the casing and having integral diametrically opposite handle arms extending laterally from its bottom portion and a pair of pivot arms embracing said upper end of said casing and also integrally joined to said housing between the handle arms, said pivot arms being hingedly connected to the case and offset lateral- 1y relative to the housing so as to swing freely over the end portion of said casing, a plunger slidably carried in said housing, and a springbacked locking sleeve mounted in said housing for releasably holding said housing in alignment with said casing.
2. A hypodermic syringe comprising, in combination, a tubular holder, a head closing one end of said holder, means hinging the head to said holder comprising a pair of oppositely disposed arms extending from the head and embracing the adjacent end of said holder, and a boss projecting inwardly from the end portion of each arm and trunnions extending from said bosses into bearing recesses in said tubular holder.
