Description

Jan. 19, 1954 A. LATTOF CIGARETTE EXTINGUISHER Filed June 10, 1950 Patented Jan. 19, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
The invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of cigarettes by the addition of a band to which wax or parafiin or like materials have been applied; and the objects of the improvement, are, first, as a safety factor in preventing fires, to extinguish discarded lighted cigarettes; second, to eliminate disturbing and discomfiting smoke of cigarettes which are not fully extinguished; and third, to eliminate necessity of snuffing out cigarettes.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an extended view of the cigarette extinguisher; Figure 2, when the extinguisher is banded on a corktipped cigarette; Figure 3, the extinguisher at point of contact with lighted end of cigarette; and Figure 4, an open cigarette paper wrapper with cigarette extinguishing materials applied directly to the original wrapper.
The base i is a narrow strip of varying width, perferably one-quarter to one-eighth inch, of material, preferably paper, but may be metal foil, cloth, cork, or any synthetic or plastic material, to which is coated or lined with wax, parafiin or similar or easily melted material 2, and glue applied to the edge 3. Figure 2 shows the coated band l with the coated part 2 ringed around next to the cigarette 5, but not glued to the cigarette 5; this band being moveable, permits the smoker to smoke the cigarette to a greater or shorter length before the extinguisher takes effect. Figure 3 shows a lighted end of cigarette 6 at point of contact with the extinguisher 4, melting the wax, paraffin, or similar material 2, and cuts off or chokes the fire t; the oxygen supply being eliminated, and the cigarette extinguished. The coating of wax, paraffin, or other similar material 2 may be applied directly to the original cigarette paper wrapper 8 at a point 9 determined by the manufacturer, as shown in Figure 4. The cork tip it used on some types of cigarettes may be perforated or cut at a point i I, and have the wax, parafiin or similar material 2, applied to the lower portion of the cork l2, thereby using their present material as a base. The band 4 may be used for advertising or imprinting the name of the cigarette, supplanting the need for printing the cigarette paper.
I am aware that prior to my invention, cork has been used in the manufacture of cigarettes. I therefore do not claim such a combination broadly; but I claim:
1. In a cigarette comprising an elongated tube of inflammable material and a filling of tobacco within said tube, means for extinguishing said cigarette when a predetermined length thereof has been consumed, said means comprising a band encircling said tube and adapted to be moved longitudinally to a selected position thereon, and a thermally liquifiable coating of low melting point material carried by the band on the side thereof adjacent the tube.
2. A cigarette extinguisher comprising a band adapted to encircle a cigarette and to be moved longitudinally to a selected position thereon, and a thermally liquifiable coating of low melting point material carried by the band on the inner surface thereof.
3. A cigarette extinguisher comprising an elongated strip of flexible material adapted to be wrapped around a cigarette, a coating of adhesive carried by one face of the strip adjacent one end thereof, and a coating of low melting point thermally liquifiable material carried by the strip and extending from the adhesive coating to the end of the strip remote therefrom.
ALPHON SE LATTOF.
