UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Edward F. McGrath, Kansas City, Mo. Application September 7, 1951, Serial No. 245,550 (01. 2-88) 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in garments and particularly to an outside multipurpose garment for use in cold weather.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an outer garment adapted to be worn over the ordinary clothing in the form of an overcoat having a lower portion foldable inwardly and upwardly on the inside of the cloak portion and which may be folded downwardly and fastened around the feet of the wearer when in a sitting position.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a garment of this character having a cloak portion, a hood portion, and a lower portion with means for fastening the lower portion to the inside of the cloak portion to adapt the device as a coat; to provide means for fastening the lower portion of the garment around the feet of the wearer when in a sitting position; to provide hand openings in the front of the cloak portion; to provide a garment which may be folded into a compact position when not in use; and to provide a device of this character, simple, economical to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a garment of the character particularly adapted to be worn in cold weather to outdoor sports, such as football games and the like to protect the lower extremities of the body and legs of the wearer.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the garment showing the flap or lower portion of the garment in extended position.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the garment showing the flap or lower portion in clasped or cloak position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the garment in cloak form shown on the wearer.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the garment showing the lower portion extended and in closed position on the wearer in standing position.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the wearer in sitting position.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
l designates a garment embodying the features of my invention comprising a cloak 2, having a back 3, sides 4 and front portions 5. It includes shoulder portions 5 and a hood I, the hood I having a neck 8 formed integrally with the shoulder portion position by the snap fasteners. of the snap fasteners is spaced as indicated at of the cloak. The hood include a rolled forward portion 9 which extends down the forward portion of the garment, as indicated at IU.
Formed integrally with the cloak portion 2 of the garment are extensions or flap portions II and I2 forming a lower. extremity for the garment. The front portions 5 of the cloak are provided near the forward mating edges with openings l3 through which the hands of the wearer may extend if desired.
The flap portions H and I2 are rounded on the lower ends providing a substantially V-shaped space I4 therebetween when in open extended position.
The outer peripheries of the flap portions II and I2 are provided with a fastening device, such as a zipper or the like, I5, the base of the zipper being at the junction point of the inside of the flap, as indicated at I6 (Fig. 1). The base. of the zipper is the the back of the garment sothat when it is desired to be fastened, the: wearer may reach between the legs and pull the: zipper downwardly and upwardly so that when. it is closed the moving part is in the front portion of the garment as indicated at I! (Fig. 4)..
One portion l8 of the snap fasteners is pro-- vided on the inside of the cloak portion 2 substantially midway between the shoulder portions and the bottom of the cloak portion, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, and the other portion IQ of the snap fasteners is located at the lower extremity of the rounded portion of the flaps II and I2 so that when the garment is to be used as a cloak, the flaps may be folded upwardly on the inside of the cloak and secured in said folded The portion I8 20 and the other portion IS on the extreme ends of the rounded portion of the flap are also spaced as indicated at 2| to align with the portion I8.
I here illustrate three snap fasteners in spaced relation. Any number may be used as desired.
When it is desired to use the garment as a coat, the lower flaps may be folded as shown in Fig. 3, and the hood portion extended over the head of the wearer, or it may be folded back over the shoulders of the wearer if desired. If the legs and lower extremities of the body of the wearer become cold, the flap may be disengaged by loosening of the snap fasteners and the flaps dropped downwardly and the zipper fastener closed to bring the flaps around the legs of the user, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and may be worn in standing or sitting positio it is an advantage of a garment of this character that it may be worn as a coat and not have to be carried in the usual custom as with robes or blankets and takes the place of an overcoat in many instances, as well as the blanket which is usually necessary even when an overcoat is worn. In extreme cold weather, the garment may be used over an overcoat, if desired.
It l be b iate te e io eeome tha I have p ovided a im r r earment'w ich m y be Worn either in a cloak position or in an extended closed position to clothe the entire body of the wearer.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A garment of the character described including, a cloak portion having a :gaelr, side and front portions and a hood formed integrally with the cloak, said front portion of the cloak having openings through which the hands of the wearer may be vextended, flaps formed integrallywith the lower. portionof the cloak, the lower :end of saidflaps being-substantially rounded forming a substantially V-shaped space between the flaps when inextended position, the .V-shaped space terminating at substantially the tail portion of the back-of sthecloak portion, a zipper fastener having :one end secured at the point of said 4 v-shaped space and having two complementary portions thereof extending around the outer periphery of the respective flaps, said flaps being of a length to extend around the legs and under the lower extremities of the wearer to form a closed lower portion, said closed portion being formed by bringing together the two complementary ortions of the zipper fastener, one portion 0:? a numbn of can iastener ecu On the n ide of t e c n rt cn s bs an ial y m way thereof in spaced relation, and the other portion of the snap fasteners secured to the lower extremities of said flaps in spaced relation whereby the flaps may be folded inwardly and upwardly and Secured to the cloak portion so that the garment may be worn as a coat.
