GARMENT Filed July 2G. 1948 Patented Oct. 20, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a garment having a pair of tubular members or sleeves for enclosing the legs and feet of a wearer, which members are closed at their ends but each provided with an opening, so that at will the wearer may keep his feet within the members or may extend them through the openings to the outside.
The object ci the invention is such a formation of a garment of the indicated type which combines comfortable wear with simple design and the possibility or inexpensive manufacturing.
This object is achieved by providing an opening or slot in each foot receiving portion of the garment arranged between and spaced from its closed end and its connection with the leg receiving portion. Preferably, such opening or slot is formed in the wall of the garment covering the top of the foot. An at least partly removable cover for the opening may be provided.
The objects, features and advantages of the invention are more fully disclosed by the attached drawing, illustrating one embodiment of the invention, and by the following detailed description.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary diagrammatic side elevation of one leg and foot receiving member of a garment, showing in dot-and-dash lines leg and foot of a wearer enclosed therein;
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic section along line 2-2 of Figure l and a plan view of the foot receiving portion;
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic section along line 3-3 through the foot receiving portion;
Figure 4 is fragmentary section along line 4 4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a side elevation corresponding to Figure l but showing the foot of the wearer freed of the garment; and
Figure 6 is a diagrammatic section along line 6-6 of Figure 5.
The illustrated part of a garment serves for covering the lower part I of a leg, the ankle Il, and foot l2 with toes I3 0I" a wearer, and comprises generally a leg receiving portion I4 and a foot receiving portion I5, the latter closed at its end I6 in the toe receiving region.
The illustrated piece of clothing will mostly be so long as to cover the knee and upper leg part also and will be used in a pair forming part of a nightsut or the like. The garment may consist of any suitable material, such `as Woven or knitted cloth.
The foot receiving portion I has a top wall I'I which is provided between its outer, closed end IB and its merger into the leg receiving portion with an opening I8. This opening is of a sufcient size to permit foot I1 and ankle I3 of a wearer to be extended therethrough. "Ihe size of the opening necessary for this purpose depends also on the amount to which the adjoining parts of the garment can be deformed and stretched.
The opening is preferably covered by a ap I9 secured on the lateral sides and on the transverse side adjacent the leg receiving portion along lines 20 and 2|, such as by sewing. The outer transverse side is not permanently attached but may be held by a button 22, hook or the like.
The hap I9 may be resilient so as to hold the lower part of the garment to the leg of the wearer when the foot is freed by extension through the opening as illustrated in Figure 5. In this position, the flap or cover I9 covers the front of the lower leg portion while top wall Il and sole 23 in front of the opening overlap each other and lare held against the heel of the foot. The leg receiving portion and the adjoining section of the foot receiving portion are pushed up on the leg and may form some folds.
The simplicity of the new garment, as well as the ease with which it may be made at a low cost, are self-evident. It will also be understood that the garment is comfortable to wear because it consists entirely, with the possible exception of button 22, of cloth or the like, and because there are only two overlapping layers of material anywhere when the foot is covered (Figures l to 3) as well as when it is uncovered (Figures 5 and 6).
The invention is not restricted to the illustrated embodiment but is susceptible to modifications. For instance, the opening may have another form and consist merely of a slot; the cover may be omitted, may be formed by an extension of the top wall itself or may consist of one or two flaps attached permanently on one side of the foot and releasably on the other side.
Protection is sought for the broad aspects of the invention yas well as for specific disclosed details.
What is claimed is:
In a leg and foot receiving member of a garment, as pajamas, having a pair of such members, a leg-receiving portion and an attached foot-receiving portion, said fcotereceiving portion being closed at the outer end rand having an opening therein, said opening being located substantially in the middle between the closed endof the foot receiving portion and the legreceiving portion, said opening 4being shaped and dimensioned for permitting the wearer of the garment to extend his foot through it so as to uncover the latter. f
