This invention relates to a means for apply paint or other liquid to a surface, the object being to provide a device having a moisture absorbent material on a surface thereof or that may be connected with a source of supply of paint or other liquid, such as water, to clean a wall surface.
These and other features and objects of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and a device embodying my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved liquid applicator.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section showing the means for distributing the liquid practically uniformly over the full length of the chamber.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section showing the means for supplying the liquid to the body of the applicator.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section showing the preferred means for securing the liquid absorbent material to the under side of the casing.
In the form of the device shown more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2, the device is rectangular in plan view which consists of a body I of suitable sheet material to the lower face of which is secured a plate 2 having apertures 3 therein. The peripheral edge of the plate 2 is secured to the outwardly extending flange 4 of the body I as shown clearly in Fig. 4. On the outer surface of the plate 2 is a rubber sheet 5 having transverse apertures 6 and the sheet 5 is shaped to receive the flange 4 of the body I. On the sheet 5 is a foraminous rubber sheet 1, the peripheral edge of which is secured between the flange 4 of the body I and the flange I of the cover member II. The said cover member is centrally apertured to receive an end of the liquid supply conduit I2 which includes the packing nut I3 threaded on the upper end of the inverted T- shaped member I4 which has a transverse passageway l and a longitudinal passageway I M with longitudinally spaced apertures therein. The center of the cover member I! is flanged as indicated at I6 and a rubber ring I! is positioned between the nut I3 and the flange portion I6 of the cover member and serves to prevent leakage of fluid to the surface of the casing.
The liquid supply conduit I2 is provided with a chambered hand hold I8 and packing nuts I9 and 20 are provided at each end of the member I8 by means of which the device may be manipulated. Within the member I8 is a valve which is normally closed and may be opened by pressure on the outer end of the valve stem 22 and thus permit flow of liquid to the passageway I5 and thence into the apertured conduit I511. The valve may be maintained in open position by hand pressure on the stem 22.
By this means the operator may open't-he valve for a supply of fluid to the foraminous rubber sheet I, the peripheral edge Ia of which is held in position by the rubber ring 23 positioned bethe thumb of the operator may manipulate the valve operating element 22 to supply paint or other liquid to the sheet 1 or prevent supply of liquid thereto.
In the present form of the device liquid is applied to a liquid absorbent sheet of material and is moved over a surface to be cleaned or painted.
It is believed evident from the foregoing description in conjunction with the drawing that the various features and objects of the invention are attained by the character and structural relationship of parts as hereinbefore described.
Having thus briefly described my invention, its
utility and mode of operation, What I claim and,
desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In a device for applying liquid to a surface, a hollow open ended body having upright side walls and a laterally extending peripheral flange at its lower end, an apertured plate secured over the lower open end of said body, an apertured rubber sheet bearing against the undersurface of said plate with portions thereof extending around said flange and bearing against the side Walls of said body throughout their height, a foraminous rubber sheet bearing against the undersurface of said first sheet with portions thereof extending upwardly and bearing against outer surface portions of said first sheet relative to the side walls of said body throughout their height, a rubber ring extending around said side walls above said flange and retainingly bearing against corresponding outer side wall portions of said foraminous sheet, and a centrally apertured manipulatable cover secured over the open end of said body and having a depending peripheral flange retainingly engaging outer portions of said rubberring and portions of said foraminous sheet down to the bottom of said peripheral flange.
