This invention relates to 'new and useful improvements in pocket attachments and the primary object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for pockets that will releasably support the clips of writing implements, such as pencils',l pens` and the like.

Another important object of the present invention is to-provide a clip retainingL pocket attachment including a pair of hingedly connected clamping memberswhich are removably secured together in orderto clampingly'engage the upper edgeofa pocket. l

A furtherobject ofthe present-invention is to provide a clip retaining pocket attachment of the aforementioned character wherein one of the clamping members is provided with a plu-` rality of spaced parallel recesses for accommodating clips and with a shoulder portion at the lower ends of the recesses for engaging the free ends of the clips received in the recesses.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a clip retaining pocket attachment that is simple and practical in construction, small and compact in structure, neat and attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside inthe details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a pocket and showing the present invention applied thereto and holding the clip of a pen;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the present invention showing the front clamping member raised relative to the back clamping member; and,

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 1 and showing the pen and its clip in dotted lines.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I represents the present clip retainer generally including elongated front and rear members I2 and I4 which are provided with at inner bearing faces I6 and I8. A U-shaped plate member 26 is suitably xed in a similarly shaped recess 20a in the inner face of member I2. The web portion of the plate member 20 is elongated and extends longitudinally over the member I2 and the parallel leg portions 22 of the plate member 26 extend transversely' of the member I2. v

The inner face I8 of member I4 is provided with a pair of transverse recesses 24 adjacent its ends in which apair of flat arms' Mi` are suitably?- fixed. Member! I2 is` provided with arpairf-of countersunken end' apertures -36 thatY register withY apertures 32 inthe legportion's-22.\ Headed fasteners 34 extend through apertures 30 and 32 and are receivably engaged in threaded registering apertures 36 and 38 in the arms 26 and` member I4, respectively. The ends of the fasteners 34 that project rearwardly beyond the member I2 are provided with peripheral grooves that receive split lock rings 4D to retain the fasteners relative to the member I2 while permitting rotation of the fasteners as they are engaged in the apertures 34,- 36.

,The outerv lconvex surface of member I2 is provided with afplurality of spaced parallel transverse, vertically extending, grooves 42 whose lower ends intersect a longitudinal shoulder portion 44 on the convex surface of member I2.

In practical use of the present invention, the member I4 is slipped within a pocket P so that its bearing face I8 will contact the inner face of the pocket forming nap. Then, the member I2 is pivoted downwardly so that its inner flat face 20 will contact the outer face of the pocket forming flap. The fasteners 34 are rotated to enter the apertures 36 and 38 and clampingly secure the members I2 and I4 together, it being known that the fasteners :willextend up above the upper edge of the pocket forming nap.

An article, such as a pen P is inserted into the pocket P and the clip C of the pen P' is received in a selected one of the grooves 42. The enlarged ball end or free end E of the clip C is engaged under the shoulder portion 44 to prevent upward movement of the pen within the pocket.

Obviously, any suitable number of articles Amay be disposed in the pocket with their clips received in the grooves 42 and engaged against the shoulder portion 44.

It is preferred that the members I2 and I4 be constructed of plastic to reduce the weight of the entire attachment and that the member 20 and arms 26 be secured in their accommodating recesses by cement or the like in order to avoid the necessity of securing these parts by fasteners, such as pivots. v

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A clip retaining pocket attachment comprising front and rear hingedly connected clamping members, fastening means carried by the front member, said rear member having threaded apertures therein receivably engaging vthe fastening means to clampingly connect the members, said forward member having a front face with a plurality of spaced parallel vertical grooves therein adapted to accommodate the clips of writing implements, said front face also having a horizontal external shoulder portion at the lower ends of the grooves whereby the free ends of clips may be engaged over the shoulder portion and held against upward movement, and resilient means engaged with the fastening means and restricting disengagement of the fastening means with the front member when the fastening means is removed from the threaded apertures.

2. A clip retaining pocket attachment comprising front and rear clamping members each having an inner face and an upper edge, the inner face of said front member having a U- shaped recess therein of equal depth throughout its length, a U-shaped plate member fixed in said recess and having an outer face flush with the inner face of said front member, said rear member having a pair of transverse recesses in its inner face, arms fixed in said transverse recesses and having outer faces flush with the inner face of said rear member, a pair of hinges at the upper edges of said front and rear members and connected to the arms and the plate member to hingedly secure the front and rear members together, fasteners carried by the front member, said rear member and said arms having registering threaded apertures to receive the fasteners when the front and rear members are in juxtaposition.
