This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a chair having an adjust- 3 Claims. (Cl. 155-116) able seat and back rest in which the seat and by the person sitting in the chair, to positionswhich will be most comfortable.
Yet another and equally important object of T the invention is the provision of an arrangement for accomplishing the foregoing objects, which will be economical in manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the chair embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view similar to Fig.
1, but showing the parts thereof in different positions;
Fig. 3 is a perspective exploded view of the several parts comprising my improved chair;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 44 of Fig. 5;
Fig. 5 is a front view of the chair;
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail view taken on line 5-6 of Fig. 5.
The preferred form of construction of my improved chair is illustrated in the drawings. this connection, my improved chair comprises a structure including side frames 10 arranged in parallel spaced relation and interconnected together by a structure Iii comprising front and rear crossbars II and I2. A back rest M of suitable construction is pivotally connected as at IE to the frames 10.
The chair further includes a seat IB of suitable construction including a seat cushion l1 and a 5' bottom plate 18. The back rest 14 likewise includes a cushion I9 and a back plate 20. These cushions may be of any approved construction which will afford the maximum comfort to the user of the chair.
Extending between the crossbars II and I2, and in parallel spaced relation with respect to each other, are mounting bars 2|. Secured to the bottom of the seat It in any suitable'gmanner and mounted in spaced relation with respect to each other, are two horizontal seat supporting bars 22 and 22. These supporting bars have in their bottom portions a pair of corresponding U-shaped grooves 23 and 23', which are adapted to receive the mounting bars 2 I, These channelshaped grooves 23 and 23' are of such a depth that ball bearings 25. may be inserted in the channels so as to ride upon the top of the mounting bars 2|, and still form a flush surface with the bottom of the bars, as shown in Fig. 6.
The seat supporting bars 22 and 22' with their corresponding ball bearings 25 in the channelshaped grooves 23 and 23 are secured to the mounting bars 2! by means of securing plates 25.
After the seat It with its horizontal bars 22 and 22' secured to the bottom thereof, is placed upon the mounting bars 2 I, the plate 25 is placed across the bottom and in parallel relation with the supporting bars 22 and 22', and secured thereto in any suitable manner, thus providing the seat I6 with movable connection to the frame H] of the chair. 1 g
The mounting bars 2| have coil springs 25 threaded on their forward end, such that the spring will engage the front crossbar l2 and the forward seat supporting bar 22, to yieldably hold under the normal tension of the spring, the seat in normal position with respect to the frame 19. Also located in the mounting bars 2|, but near the rear crossbar II, is a stop pin 21, which is adapted to engage the rear seat supporting bar 22 to prevent further movement of the seat in a rearward direction.
Secured to the back plate 20 as at 28 is one end portion of a depending arm 29. The free end portion of this arm 29 has at its lower end an elongated slot 30 formed therein. This slot 3!! is adapted to receive a screw 3| threaded into the seat [6 as at 32, and disposed between the screw head 33 and the arm 29 is a coil spring 34. By this arrangement, when the seat is forced forward, the back will pivot on the connections I5, and the arm 29 will move against the action of the spring 34, as shown in Fig. 2.
The arrangement is such that a person sitting on the seat IS with his backagainst the back rest l4, may adjust the back rest l4 and the seat IE to such positions as will be most comfortable to him. This is accomplished by simultaneously adjusting the back rest l4 and seat l6 relative to the frames I 0 by bearing the body against the seat I6 and back rest M in the direction in which the occupant desires to move them, so as to arrange them in a position best suited to his comfort.
When the Weight of the occupant is removed from the seat l6 and the back rest M, the springs 26 are of sufiicient strength to cause these parts to assume their normal initial position, such as shown in Fig. 1.
My improved chair has many uses. It may be used for home purposes, in ofiices, theaters, and many other places. relatively few parts and is highly economica1 both in manufacture and use.
While I have illustrated and described this preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eifect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of furniture comprising a structure including a pair of interconnected parallelly arranged side frames, a back rest arranged between said frames, means pivotally connecting the back rest to said frames for pivotal movement relative to said frames by the weight of a body thereagainst, a seat arranged between the frames below and forwardly of the back rest, means pro viding a slidable connection between the seat and said structure whereby said seat may move inwardly and outwardly relative to said frames, said last named means comprising a pair of seat supporting bars having U-shaped grooves, roller members movable in said grooves and engaging an element of said structure, said bars having connection with the seat and slidable connection with said element of structure, spring means for resisting outward movement of said seat, an arm fixed to and depending from said back rest, and means pivotally connecting the free end of the arm to the back of said seat.

An article of furniture comprising a structure including a pair of interconnected parallelly arranged side frames, a pair of mounting bars disposed between and parallel to said side frames, a back rest arranged between said frames, means pivotally connecting the back rest to said frames for pivotal movement relative to said frames by the weight of a body thereagainst, a seat arranged The construction comprises.
4 between the frames below and forwardly of the back rest, means providing slidable connection between the seat and said structure whereby said seat may move outwardly relative to said frames, said last-named means comprising a pair of seat supporting bars having U-shaped grooves, roller members movable in said grooves and engaging said mounting bars, said seat supporting bars having connection with the seat and slidable connection with said mounting bars, spring means for resisting outward movement of said seat, stop means on said mounting bars to retain said seat in normal position as against said spring action, and a connection between the back rest and the seat whereby said seat will be moved against the action of said spring means by pivotal movement of the back rest relative to the frames by the weight of said body thereagainst.
3. An article of furniture comprising a structure including a pair of interconnected parallelly arranged side frames, a pair of mounting bars disposed between and parallel to said frames, 2. back rest arranged between said frames, means pivotally connecting the back rest to said frames, a seat arranged between the frames and forwardly of the back rest, means providing slidable connection between the seat and said structure, said last-named means comprising seat supporting bars connected to the seat in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other and substantially at right angles with respect to the mounting bars, said seat supporting bars having grooves formed therein and said mounting bars engaging in said grooves, spring elements embracing the mounting bars and disposed thereon between one of said seat supporting bars and an element of said structure, an arm fixed to and depending from said back rest, and means pivotally connecting the free end of the arm to the back of said seat.
