This invention relates to improvements in cosmetic containers and is particularly adapted as lipstick holders or containers. In present day conventional lipstick holders, one of the diiculties liesl in the fact, that it is diilicult for women to keep the same clean on the outside. Thus, in many instances pocketbooks and their contents are usually soiled.

Another difliculty lies in the* fact that rnany of such lipstick holders have removable covers which are apt to become lost. At present, the lipstick holder at its best is usually a messy affair;

It is an object of this invention to provide a cosmeticv container such as a lipstick holder, sim-` ple in construction, efficient in operation, pleasing in appearance and very practical.

It is a further object of this invention topro-h vide a lipstick holder or container', which has a hidden permanent cover, Which automatically opens when the lipstick is extended, and closes when the lipstick is retracted.

It is a still further object of this invention to housel the lipstick in a holder Within the container; the said holder being removable and be'- ing provided with small slots or openings from which to dispense the required amount oflipfstick. v

Itis a still further object of this invention to providev a lipstick container orholder which is of simple' construction as regards refilling.

A yet further purpose ofv this inventionis to` provide a lipstick container or holder which is aesthetic looking and graceful in shape and design.

Other objects and advantages will bein part obvious from the annexed drawings and in part hereinafter indicated in connection therewith by theV following analysis of this invention.

This invention accordinglyV consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and. in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof, all as more completely outlined herein.

To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the modification in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a certain form of the invention have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which:

Referring nowv more particularlyl to the drawing, the lipstick container 25 consists generallyof thel shell' 26, having the slot. 27 through which extends the push-pin 2B. The push-pin has the head portion 29 With adepression 30 for a ngergrip and the shank 3| extending through the slot 21 and a hole 32 in the retainer 33. The square shank 34 of lipstick pusher 45v extendsl into the cavity' 36` of the retainer 33. A spring 31' surrounds the shank 34 and is arranged in such a manner, that the last coil 38 will' engage a groove 39 in the shank 3ll of the push-pin 28, thus securing the same in its positionv when beingA assembled. The free end 40 of the shank 34 is weakened or recessed as at 4|", thus permitting this end portion tobe upset as at 42 after the spring 31 and a washer 43 have been applied. The other end of the square shank 34 extends through anA opening 44 in the retainer 331 and terminates in a head- 45 having the threads 46', which are in engagement with the internal threads 4l of ther lipstick holder 48. The lipstick holder 48 is normally lled with the lipstick 49 which is pushed out through the slots 50 when pressure is lexerted against the lipstick 49 by the pusher 45. The holder 48 has a knurled portion 5l to facilitate the gripping of the holder 48 for its rotation on the threaded head 45, and for thus slowly advancing the head 45 inside of the holder 48. This slow advancing of head 45, from time to time, will cause the lipstick to ooze or be forced out of the slots 50 in desired amounts, and which amounts are controlled by the turn movements of the lipstick holder. Located Within the shell 26 are two track members 52, having the general shape of a shallow pan. The web 53 of the track member 52 is surrounded by a ange 54, which is out down as at 55 to permit the passage of the lipstick holder 48 when the same is pushed out.V

Indentations 55 t into recesses 51 in the shell 26, thus preventing any movement of the( track members when being assembled. A shutter 58 travels on the outside of the flanges 54 and along the inside Wall 59 of the shell 26. Shank 3| of the push pin 28 passes through an opening 6U in the shutter 58, thus tying the motion of the push pin to the movement of the shutter 58. The shutter 58 is preferably made of thin metal, corrugated as at 6| in s uch a manner that it will readily follow the same portion of the trackmembers 52. The length of the shutter 58 and its location in the track 63 is determined in such a manner that the edge 64 of the shutter 58 will just clear the opening 65 in the shell 26 when the lipstick holder 48 starts approaching the opening 65, thus clearing the opening for the passage of the holder 48.

In assembling, the lipstick 49 is inserted in the holder 48. The shank 34 of the pusher 45 is passed through the square opening 44 of the retainer 33, thus passing this square shank 34 into the cavity 36. Spring 31 and Washer 43 are now applied; th-e end 4l is upset as at 42 and thus this unit is then completed. This unit (including track members 52) is now inserted through the rear opening 66. The shutter 58 is now inserted and when the hole 6D of the shutter 58 coincides with the hole 32 of retainer 33, the push-pin 28 is placed and in pushing its Way downp-assing through the holes 60 and 32, the groove 39 of the push-pin shank 3| will engage the last coil 38 of the spring 31. The push-pin 28 will thus be held captive by the spring. When all this is done, and the shutter has been completely located within its track 63, an end plug 61 is inserted, permanently closing the unit within the shell 26. The lipstick holder 48 is now inserted through opening 65 ,and screwed onto the head 45 until the pressure thus created against the lipstick 49 will cause the same to start protruding through the slots 58. When the lipstick 49 is used up, the holder 48 is unscrewed and a new lipstick 49 is inserted within the holder. The holder 48 is then screw-ed back vin position and the lipstick container 25 is thus made ready for further use. On account of its sturdy construction, and because there are no exposed wearing or moving parts, the lipstick container should keep for a long time. A lipstick container according to this invention, if desired, may be made of expensive or precious materials or of common materials, in which latter case it may be disposed of when the lipstick is used up.

It is apparent that a cosmetic container other than a lipstick holder or container may be constructed according to the disclosure herein. I g' It will thus be seen that there has been providedby this. invention a cosmetic container inl 4 which the various objects hereinabove set forth, together with many thoroughly practical advantages, are successfully achieved.

As many possible embodiments may be made of the above invention, and as many changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

I-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

l. A dispenser for a cosmetic preparation comprising an elongated shell open at one end and formed With at least a pair of flat sides extending parallel to each other, a longitudinal slot closed at its ends and formed in one of said at sides, guide means in said shell cooperating with said 'lat sides to dene tracks therebetween, a flexible, elongated strip forming a shutter member slidable in said tracks to extend across and close said open end of the shell in one position and to be withdrawn from said open end in another position thereof, a flat sided retainer member longitudinally slidable within said shell, said retainer member being formed with an axial aperture and a bore extending toward the slotted side of said shell and opening at its inner end away from said open end of said shell, an opening formed in said shutter member adjacent one end thereof, a headed actuating member having a pin portion extending through said slot and said opening in the shutter member and into said radial bore of the retainer member, a cosmetic holder assembly movable in said shell ahead of said retainer member to project through said open end of the shell and including a shank extending through said axial aperture of the retainer member, and means carried by said shank engaging said retainer member to yieldably secure said holder assembly relative to said retainer member and engaging the inner end of said pin portion to hold the latter in said radial bore, said last-mentioned means comprising an abutment on the free end of said shank and a coil spring on said shank bearing against said abutment at one end and against said retainer member at the other end thereof, the last coil at Isaid other end of the spring engaging in said groove of the pin portion to resist radial removal of the latter.

2. A dispenser for a cosmetic preparation according to claim 1; wherein said pin portion is formed with a circumferential groove at its inner end.

3. A dispenser for a cosmetic preparation comprising a shell open at one end and formed with a longitudinal slot closed at its ends, a retainer member longitudinally slidable within said shell and formed with a non-circular axial aperture and a bore registering at its outer end with said slot and opening at its inner end away from said open end of the shell, a headed actuating member including a pin portion extending through said slot and into said radial bore, a

tubular holder for a cosmetic preparation lon-V gitudinally movable in said shell ahead of said retainer member and formed to project through said open end of the latter, said holder being formed with restricted openings at the end facing toward said open end of the shell and being open at the opposite end thereof and internally threaded, a pusher member including a. threaded plug engageable in said tubular holder and a shank extending slidably through said axial aperture and shaped to be non-rotatable relative to the latter so that said pusher member is non-rotatable relative to said shell, and means yieldably securing said pusher member to said retainer member so that movement of said actuating member toward said open end of the shell projects said holder from the latter to permit manual rotation of the holder relative to the shell for obtaining axial movement of said plug relative to said holder to extrude cosmetic preparation through the restricted openings of the latter, said last-mentioned means including an abutment on the free end of said shank, and a coil spring on said shank between said abutment and said retainer member to continuously urge said plug toward said retainer member.

4. A dispenser for a cosmetic preparation according to claim 3, wherein said pin portion is formed with a circumferential groove adjacent its inner end, and the coil of said spring at the 6 end of the latter facing said retainer member engages in said groove to radially hold said actuating member in engagement with said retainer member.
